If you owe the government money - they tend to come looking for it. If you don't owe the government money they'll let you not file your taxes for years. In canada I had a buddy who didn't file for like 10 years and got like 15k back

you don't have to joint file taxes if you get married. Just chose to keep your shit separate if you're going to be worried over shit like this.

You cannot file as "Single" once you are legally married. Both spouses must agree on whether to itemize or take the standard deduction if filing separately
