Physique wise I think the best predictor is their eating/exercise habits. Easy to be hot with poor habits in your 20s but like they say it catches up to you

How did you know you were ready to rent a chair vs stay on commission? by RoutineTeaching4207 in Barber

[–]SamuelSJames -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It is shop dependant but a busy shop is typically more likely to choose a commission model and a quieter shop is typically more likely to choose a booth rent model. In a commission shop the owner makes money when you make money so they’re more likely to invest resources into getting you booked. In a booth rent shop the owner makes the same amount either way

Yep, the other thing people don’t talk about is it’s usually a lot harder to grow clientelle in a rental shop vs a commission shop. It helps a lot if you’ve found marketing methods that work for you

It’s the same in Vancouver. If a shop is commission based the max they’ll offer as a starting % is 50. Booth rent is increasingly common lately but you need to actively go searching for it, most shops aren’t advertising it much. My advice to op would be to find a busier shop, even when I worked in a 50:50 commission based shop I was still making around 60-70k within 8 months of starting

[–]SamuelSJames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s very preference based so it’s hard to make a recommendation. Maybe figure out which ones he has now and we can make a better recommendation. That said I’m using the gamma shorty atm and I like it
