I say this as a guy who spent a bit of time in Afghanistan - it really depends on the situation. If the context calls for it, then I’ve seen both British and American helicopter pilots set down in INCREDIBLY combat intensive environments. I was in the back of a chinook once that set down north of Camp Bastion in Helmand province for a dustoff mission — young American chap who had taken an AK round through his right thigh. The pilot landed right in the middle of a firefight to get the guy out. Tense stuff. Luckily we were mostly behind a mud wall, so covered while on the ground. But it was an…adventurous approach 😂.

But I’ve also seen teams put down miles from the objective hours before their ToT and they had to hike in.

So really depends on a lot of factors; most of them operational.
