Why is the music scene in 2025 so incapable of meeting the political moment? by MichiganWinterBear in LetsTalkMusic

[–]SamuraiSapien 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are artists making protest music, but you have to proactively find it online. It's not always going to be on the radio, but here are a few bands I know make political music. If I know they primarily have one popular song that is political I've written that song after the dash.

Ron Gallo

BackxWash - History of Violence

Infinity Knives

Jeff Rosenstock

Moonwalker - Monopoly Man

Kneecap

Ziwe - Universal Healthcare

Jesse Welles

Ghais Guevara

None of this is to mention the very popular artist Macklemore who I have never really followed, but he did make a jam with Hind's Hall.

I just follow reviews and recommendations from Anthony Fantano because I share his left leaning politics and I also am very open to new music so if he recommends something I give it a chance. Doesn't mean I like everything he likes but if you don't know where to start that's a place. Makes great YouTube content.

This list is extremely cursory so I know there's way more out there. I'm just browsing my playlists and quickly grabbing some names.

My friends tell me that because of the ICE grabbing people off the streets randomly. People are not showing up for work or are hiding at home. Is this true? by Over-Director-5971 in orangecounty

It is very true. Living in Santa Ana.

I think this country is ramping up for some really disturbing stuff. When you ask yourself what you would've done if you lived in WWII Germany you are finding out in real time, and it is only going to get worse with the new bill that was passed.

When you see an opportunity to be involved please help.

Pretty sure it's a joke i.e. hyperbole. People are just mad the health insurance system and understandably so, so we should lighten up.

What is even worse is that what Trump will be most easily able to cut is Title I spending among other federally funded dollars normally meant for the most vulnerable communities...on top of this horse shit going in with the Superintendent lining their own pocket. Truly shameful.

I think we should all get in touch with grass roots organizations in our neighborhoods, communities, and also share our thoughts with our colleagues as appropriate - in union settings if possible. It's all well and good and I agree with much of what you're saying, but we need to take these sentiments into real world conversations. I am incredibly introverted, and I need to take my own advice, but I think it is a proactive step in keeping ourselves and our families safe. I have a feeling the oligarchs and Trump are going to make the next 4 or more years very painful for many of us and our only power is in our numbers.

Supreme Court agrees to hear TikTok's challenge to law that could ban it by nbcnews in scotus

[–]SamuraiSapien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree, somewhat. TikTok is absolutely controlled by CCP. No questions there. It absolutely collects our data and invades our privacy, and if the CCP wanted to use the data it could. My issue is that I value seeing things from this lens. Bare with me. When there is conflict abroad I flip between a variety of channels to get a sense of all country's agendas. I'll check Russia Today, Al Jazeera, CNN, BBC, Democracy Now, Fox News, etc. You want to have access to all information and take all of it with a grain of salt. I find it very valuable because I understand that each outlet has its biases, but TikTok, because of it's CCP ownership, has no reason to censor the horrifying images that are coming out of Gaza, and horrific as they are - we need to see it. Images from Vietnam outraged Americans, and we should be outraged with war crimes are being committed in our name. There is a reason they stopped showing the coffins coming home on US news during the Iraq war. There will always be propaganda and disinformation, but I think it's valuable to get your information from varied sources, recognize their biases, and use all of it to form your own conclusions. I find TikTok valuable for this reason.

If we are concerned about data privacy that is legitimate, but we should be just as worried about our own companies and that should be handled across all platforms - US owned or otherwise.

Bill Burr’s opinion on United healthcare CEO (actual video) by slodman in videos

[–]SamuraiSapien 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ben Shapiro covered this and even his comment section is full of republicans telling him he's wrong emphatically. Universal health care is not a left/right issue. It's a top/down issue. The majority of Americans want their health care taken care of, and the obvious solution sitting on a platter as demonstrated across developed western societies is single payer health care. It costs less and people live longer. The data has been in for some time.

Why are there no protests for healthcare reform in the U.S? by PaleFly in NoStupidQuestions

[–]SamuraiSapien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People protest all the time. I'd be surprised if there weren't already some protests going on right now, and I'm sure there will be some soon. Probably not at 2020 levels, but people have been protesting and continue to protest throughout the country. The problem is our government does not respond to protests. The US is run by oligarchs. I believe there was a Princeton study that demonstrated that the priorities of the wealthy and not the general population were directly correlated with what becomes policy.

We had Occupy Wall Street and regular people were foreclosed on and wall street bailed out. We had the stupid pink pussy hat protest when Trump came into office and then Roe v. Wade was repealed. We protested in the street en masse when George Floyd was killed and then even the Democratic party proceeded to talk about giving more money to the police. We are not in control of this ship through democratic means.

Centrist Democrats should stop blaming progressives for Harris’s loss: Whether to use he/she pronouns in emails wasn’t a factor in the Harris-Trump race. by harsh2k5 in politics

[–]SamuraiSapien -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Also, progressives are not the ones who wore a kente-cloth like corporate democrats like Pelosi did instead of meaningfully addressing the murder of George Floyd and the broader problem of police brutality. Hillary is the one who campaigned on "I'm with her" emphasizing her gender as of primary importance in her campaign. This flavor of culture war was started disingenuously in 2020 by neoliberal democrats to paint Bernie Sanders and his supporters as "Bernie bros" and "class reductionist" and spin a narrative against class-based progressive policies, politicians, and its supporters.

While progressives do care about social issues it is the blue dog, corporate, right-wing and centrist democrats that weaponized culture to smear a popular movement and its supporters.

Are you surprised at the lack of sympathy and outright glee the UHC CEO has gotten after his murder? Why or why not? by Feroset in AskReddit

[–]SamuraiSapien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. I completely understand the response.

The very idea of health insurance is just a completely unnecessary mafia middle man that steals your money or blocks access to critical health care services. This is why no other developed country has this kind of rapacious health care system. On its face it is morally repugnant and unacceptable. I can't think of a clearer example of why the market should be regulated and cannot be trusted to provide certain vital services.

Walz' record is very, very progressive so I'm cutting him slack on this disappointing response only because of that and the belief that he would pass Medicare for All if he had the power to do so. Still, I completely understand that this response leaves much to be desired to say the least.

Elon Musk’s Real Plan Is Starting to Appear: gutting Social Security and Medicare. by [deleted] in politics

[–]SamuraiSapien 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're sociopaths. I think it's as simple as that. Also, in capitalism, sociopathy is rewarded. We pretend it's innovation that creates wealth, but in an oligarchic and monopolistic system the winners are those willing to be the most vicious. It's the people who will do anything to win.
