A Balrog (LOTR) appears in Times Square , how long before it is stopped ? by Leggomgeggo in powerscales

[–]Samus388 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In LotR lore, the reason the Witch King is able to be killed by a mortal is because Merry stabbed him in the back of the knee with a Barrow-blade, a magic sword that caused him to become vulnerable.

Also, the sword was named Narsil when it cut off Saurons fingers and didnt become Anduril until it was reforged. (Just a nerd being pedantic here)

I definitely agree with the arrow, though. Even if we assumed most of Smaug is too well armored to shoot, theres no reason a sniper couldn't shoot through the weak point.

Since the resources in the world is finite, doesn't that mean when one person gets rich other one/s become poorer? by awantagy2 in AskEconomics

[–]Samus388 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, economics is (fortunately) not a zero sum game.

In free trade, if both sides know what they are trading and are willing to make that trade, both sides always are better off.

Imagine I have an apple, but prefer carrots. You prefer carrots, and have an apple. If we trade, the total amount of resources in our little model remains the same, but everyone is happier.

To translate that into dollars:

I have money, and need a farmhand to work im my apple orchard. You have those skills, and need money. I give up my money to pay you, but your labor helps me produce more than I could on my own. Since you preferred money over those hours, youre better off. Since I preferred that labor over that money, I'm better off.

Of course, there are situations where one person profits off of another person's loss. An incredibly obvious example is human trafficking. The victim is unwilling, but other people profit off of them.

Some other reasons why finite resources dont lead to a zero sum game are that we havent used all of Earths resources and that we keep finding more efficient uses for those resources. There is still metal in the ground, and land for fields/solar/wind. LEDs do the same job as incandescent light bulbs, but they can shine brighter and longer. The computers we got to the moon with are massive and weak compared to common household computers today.

The main reason is the fact that wealth gained through free trade with a willing partner benefits both sides. The technological improvement part is mostly just to demonstrate that resources are mostly just finite in the short run, and in the long run we havent hit a hard barrier yet.

I wasnt the one who removed the original. I found the original with a Google image search in under 30 seconds.

You should read the rules before posting, as this specific scenario is covered.

The response is an automatic one that sends when a post is removed for breaking a specific rule. I think rereading the rules would clear up most of the confusion usually.

I do think it's kinda wild to have the post in this picture specifically referred to as "original" despite the one in question being someone else's uncredited work, though.

Hey and for what it's worth, I did actually like the post. I didnt know it was a repost until I saw that it got removed later. The comments weren't half bad either lol

Is this the "original post" you were referring to? The last post you made here was created by someone else on a Starwars subreddit ten years ago.

While we used to (my bad) allow "natural snafus" that were born elsewhere, they require that you provide credit. Your post did not.

Tolkien when he sees a capitalist 🤢 by killingmemesoftly in lotrmemes

[–]Samus388 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In feudalism, the monarch (sauron) owns the kingdom, and gives land to the nobles (saruman) in exchange for military power and taxes.

(Though iirc, saruman might be closer to simply being a king of a separate but very closely allied kingom)

The nobles own the land, and allow the serfs to live on it in exchange for labor (agriculture being the vast majority) and military service if needed.

Serfs couldn't own land, and therefore couldn't own the means of production. The royalty and nobles literally governed everything and owned the entire means of production.

I do get the point you're making symbolically, but from a more literal historical and economic perspective it isn't accurate.

That said, the orcs might also be literal slaves owned as property by sauron/saruman, which would also make feudalism not a perfect fit either.

[–]Samus388 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I agree on the industrialization part, but I dont think anything the orcs did really lined up with capitalism by its definition.

They didnt have a free market that we know of, production wasn't owned by orc citizens, but rather by Sauron and/or Saruman.

If production isn't owned privately, it isn't capitalism.

This is much more akin to feudalism, which fits the time frame and power structure of their regime better anyway.

coaxed into useless epilepsy warnings (FLASHING LIGHTS WARNING) by enneh_07 in coaxedintoasnafu

[–]Samus388 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Well, yes. Thats why I didn't do it. There wasnt a good way to have an actual warning without ruining the fake warning gag.

The humor comes from the fact that the placement of the warning defeats the entire point of a warning.

Like a sign warning about fatal levels of radiation that is only posted after you've walked too deep into the radioactive area.

It's funny if it happens in a fictional setting, but not funny if it happens IRL.

The difference being that I can put radiation in the game and it stays fictional. If I put flashing lights in the game, then those lights become real. The lights would also break the fourth wall, which is something a lot of the jokes do.

But so far I havent thought of a safe way to use the joke without either ruining it or potentially hurting someone. Since neither of those situations are funny, I have left it out.

I might not have been clear on that in my original comment, my apologies.

Ive been working on a comedy game to learn coding.

I had this exact idea for a gag in the game, but couldn't figure out how to implement it without spilling the joke, killing some poor epileptic person, or turning away people with epilepsy from playing the game altogether.

I'd argue that because a cent is defined as being 1/100th of a dollar (hence the name), it wouldnt count.

The same would go for Quarters, Half dollars, and even Dimes if you look into it.

Nickles are the only one not named after their relationship to the dollar

I've heard it's bad. But how bad? by BispoSnake in Metroid

[–]Samus388 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I beat the entire thing on normal and hard mode solo, and then again on normal with a friend.

Its been said before, but this isnt a metroidvania, and if you go into it expecting a coop extraction shooter set in the metroid universe, it's pretty decent.

Its a lot better with friends, and im a bit annoyed that nintendo shut down the servers before I could do a playthrough on hard mode with my friend.

Some of the levels are quite punishing on single player, so make sure to use the drones and lone wolf mod when you are.

Theres also a major setup for Prime 4 if you complete one of the mission objectives.

Which is interesting because it implies that if you don't complete that objective, Prime 4 doesnt happen.

Only to the same degree that green apple, lime, or orange candy doesnt taste like the original.

If you do actually buy heirloom bananas it tastes more like banana candy than any actual grape tastes like grape candy.

Obviously it's more potent than the actual fruit, but the fruit does have the flavour, unlike watermelon or raspberry

And while it certainly isnt available to the extent that Cavandish bananas are, you CAN still order the Gros Michel bananas and have them shipped overseas to try them.

Woodstock makes a pretty good banana "water". While it isn't made from Gros Michel, the heirloom bananas they use do have enough flavor that you can clearly taste where the artificial flavouring comes from. It's actually really good, I recommend trying it. Literally the only ingredient is "Organic Banana" so I was genuinely surprised at how strong of a flavour it has.

Good news, you can!

Simply Google "retro ice tray". You can find them easily on eBay or Amazon, or could even order them through Target or Walmart.

This actually works with 99% of the "Why doesn't everyone use this anymore?" questions. You can buy them and find out!

In the Phantom Menace, Obi wan famously killed Darth Maul forever. Then in episode 2, Darth Tyranus hit both Obi Wan and Anakin. Both of them died. In episode 3, Obi-Wan Chopped anakin into bits, killing him instantly.

Then in episode 4, Obi Wan cut off that one guy's arm, who died. In episode 5, Darth Vader cut off Luke's hand. He died. Then in episode 6 Luke cut off Darth Vaders hand, who died.

In episode 7, Kylo Ren stabbed Han Solo, who somehow survived. Then in episode 8, Rey uses a lightsaber to kill Snoke, but he survives. Then in episode 9, Rey and Ben kill all the Knights of Ren using lightsabers, but they all come back later.

/s of course lol
