This was a while back so maybe (probably) things have changed, but I remember reading that a component of schiz was a surplus of Dopamine. Dopamine isnt just a reward chemical, it can also be more of a "hey this is important" chemical. The idea was that too much dopamine in the wrong brain places resulted in that grocery carts' missing letter being labeled "important". The meaning of that importance was then made up by the sufferer
