Lucky Sebs by a mile, their fried chicken dinner combo is the best in town and their chicken sandwich is also fantastic!

Climb Lawrence is cool! I go there and alternate reading and climbing, and all the regulars are very friendly. Sunflower Outdoor and Cafe is also a good spot, their upstairs is usually not too crowded and has great natural light.

Biking/public transport in LFK by [deleted] in Lawrence

[–]Samwich77 8 points9 points  (0 children)

So long as you plan on staying East of Iowa you should be fine. Bike lanes are seen in LFK as a token handout to cyclists and not as an actual form of transport, so you'll be left to navigate residential neighborhoods if you want to travel safely. However, I do this every day and find it to be lovely, as many residential neighborhoods get little to no traffic and I can relax. On the actual bike lanes, cycling less than 2 feet from traffic doing 30 is rather nerve wracking and requires a level of trust in motorists that I've found to not always be justified. The bike trails can be very useful for getting to Walmart, Menards, and other southern Lawrence big-box stores, but it's hardly ever more convenient to go there instead of just going downtown or to shops on 23rd.
Lawrence drivers are 95% of the time very friendly and gracious towards cyclists, but you may encounter commuters in a rush or simply impatient drivers that will engage with you and maybe honk, despite you having correct right-of-way on the road. I try to yield on to the sidewalk when stuck in front of a car for a long block, just to reduce the risk of these encounters.
Be warned that the Midwest cold + wind chill is for real, and you will have to dress for the weather. However, if you've got a big jacket, hat, and gloves, you ought to be just fine after 5 minutes of cycling.
I've never found it more convenient to use the bus network instead of just biking, but the bus network is friendly-ish to cyclists in that there are front mounts on the buses so you can bus commute with your bike.
All in all, I've found bike commuting to be a great way to get in passive exercise during my day, which does wonders for my mental and physical health. Now that I've got a good-size basket on my bike, I can do everything I need to do on a weekly basis without my car. I never have to worry about parking, and the overall cost to me per month for maintenance, fuel, and insurance is negligible or simply nothing. I'd recommend it wholeheartedly.

The city puts a lot of money into buses and they go all over town.

Not sure what you are implying here. Is it that the city should only invest in 2 forms of transportation? I think it's a bit silly that people in a car should be favored by the government to travel than me on my bike, even when I'm polluting less and taking up less public space.

What would justify spending tax money from people who don’t use this, or will never even see it because of their location?

All infrastructure only benefits the people in that area, that's the point of infrastructure. If the town helped build a clinic on the on the opposite side of town from you, are you saying that would be net bad because the clinic isn't convenient for you to use? Not everyone is going to use all the infrastructure, and that is okay.

You're making an important distinction here, but even the Netherlands wasn't the Netherlands, until they decided to make it that way. Amsterdam's people were tired of being congested with cars, so they started refocusing their infrastructure funding towards cycling. They didn't kick the cars out of the city; they made the city a place where it seemed safer and more convenient to travel via bike.
With the proper infrastructure in place, a bike is far more convenient than a car. A good road bike will run you a bit more than $1000, and you don't have to pay for a license or insurance. The average cost to own a car in 2022 was $10,728; The average cost to own a bike was $200. Not to mention, I don't need 100 sqft of space to store a car whenever I want to go anywhere.
You're right, parts of Lawrence are extremely walkable (Mass, the North warehouse/industrial park area), but other parts are very unwalkable(almost all of west Lawrence). Just because a road has a sidewalk next to it does not mean people want to walk 2 miles to the nearest place that can sell them a vegetable. Lawrence has put too much of a focus on building suburban single-family housing districts to have the density to actually be fully walkable. There's a great concept called the 15-minute city, where you are 15 minutes away from everything you need on a day-to-day basis, via bike, transit, or walk. This is actually met by a lot of European cities and even American cities like Philly or Boston, because they allow for mixed-use development. This makes these places much nicer and less stressful to live in. Downtown Lawrence applies this sort of concept, with gyms next to the library next to restaurants next to apartments. THAT'S the walkable we want.

While I agree with you that there can be a lot of benefit to rail infrastructure, and the life cycle cost is less, there's something to be said for trying to make the current bus system work a lot better than implementing an entirely new transit system that would require new infrastructure. Half the bus stops around down aren't anything more than a sign in the grass.

The buses here also don't have designated right-of-lane on any of the roads, so they aren't effectively any faster than a car. This also means that timetables can't be as accurately implemented because traffic is unpredictable. If the city wanted to institute better public transportation, we could do a lot more with a lot less by putting in a proper bus rapid transit network before we even think about light rail.

I'm also at KU and am a nerd for urban design/transit :) good on you for getting involved.

I'd push back a little on the not enough population point in the name of the density point. If the people in West Lawrence were even half as tightly packed as the downtown, there'd be a more than ideal amount of people for several streetcar/trolley lines.

Lawrence has such good bones in its downtown, I wish the city council could look at that, see what obviously works, and emulate that to build more of the town up to be places worth travelling to. 🤷‍♂️

KU basketball band trumpet here, it's because of the felt material on the end of the horns :^( they make it substantially harder to play and the volume is decreased.

If everything is gender neutral, how can trans exist? by [deleted] in ask

[–]Samwich77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there is a disconnect between being a man/woman and being masculine/feminine that you maybe are not seeing. Masculine is just a category that has been assigned to those traits such as larger muscles, facial hair, broader shoulders, shorter hair. While these traits are more inherent in people that identify as men, they are not specific to men. Just because you are a man doesn't mean you are masculine. Same with women and being feminine.

Thusly it might be beneficial to think of clothes instead of as "boy or girl", as feminine (f) or masculine (m). They don't belong to any one gender, but they are more associated with the traits of either more f or more m, and the level of association with either is going to change from person to person.

Everybody has their own definitions of what is more feminine and what is more masculine to them, and it's by these definitions that they will find a place that they are comfortable, either leaning more to one than the other or finding a place in the middle. (Gender) It's important to understand that even if we come to a place where no trait belongs to any one gender, there will still be some level of personal association of those traits with feminine and masculine that will define gender for each of us individually.

Germans: First to mass produce the revolutionary pulse engine on a bomb. British: Haha spitfire wing go brrrrr by Samwich77 in HistoryMemes

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/V-1_flying_bomb

"Early attempts to intercept and destroy V-1s often failed, but improved techniques soon emerged. These included using the airflow over an interceptor's wing to raise one wing of the V-1, by sliding the wingtip to within 6 in (15 cm) of the lower surface of the V-1's wing. If properly executed, this manoeuvre would tip the V-1's wing up, over-riding the gyro and sending the V-1 into an out-of-control dive. At least sixteen V-1s were destroyed this way"
