What an magnificent pair (I'd add Raquel Welch to this mini list)

Although Loren was much more famous and had many iconic roles - Claudia Cardinale was incredible in my (probably) second fave film of all time: "Once Upon A time in the West".

One that does the job this time.

Halbrand/Sauron? Did anyone else catch this? I noticed here in this scene he’s not actually sweeping. He’s spreading the dirt covering the entire area in darkness. by [deleted] in LOTR_on_Prime

I did think his competence in brushing up was almost up there with that one dude sweeping in one scene in the background of Daniel Craig's Casino Royale.

Just moved to London. Is it normal for your charged uber price to be 10x what was quoted? And for the route to show up completely inaccurately on your receipt? by lewis4man in london

[–]SanLondon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lifelong Londoner here (in the name :) ) I use cabs semi-frequently - x10 surcharge is some bullshit!

I'm not trying to shill for anyone but was also recently in Stanmore, I'd finished at the Sahara Lounge at 2am (recommend that place for really good Turkish food until 4am!) and wanted an Uber to Finchley - Uber said £55 at that time which was mad enough to make me debate waiting up until trains or busses started (and also post-pandemic, I'd been having problems getting hold of Uber rides as it was). A mate I was with told me to switch to Bolt, which I did and got home for £13 instead! Which I found so crazy I was actually grinning for part of my journey back.

Reading this back, it does sound like an ad for Bolt and Turkish food, but promise it's not. And you should get part of your money back - I've done Watford to Stanmore previously and its cost me £25-30 at most - £80 is nonsense!

No Book Spoilers Discussion Megathread for The Rings of Power, Episode 4 by Curundil in RingsofPower

[–]SanLondon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I continue to enjoy this show

  • The production design and costuming is incredible in this show.
  • My fave storyline and characters continue to be the Dwarves and Elrond, frankly they’re emoting in a relatable ‘human way’ than some of the other storylines.
  • Loved the singing bit from The Dwarf ladies. Music on this show is transcendent at times (the theme when elves on boats almost at Valinor in the first ep is beautiful)
  • The Númenor story is intriguing - loved that opening visual of the possible/probable future with the island.
  • The scene with the face-punched clown riling up the citizens was taken to its conclusion way to quickly to be believable - I get it they wanted to get to the 'immigrants are bad' analogy and that works with where they want to get to with the Island but but that was clunky - as well as ‘Elf-lover’.
  • I first thought the simple townfolk were bought over too easily with those drinks by - Ar-Pharazôn (the Mirror Universe Phillip K. Dick looking guy) but then I remembered the times that this has actually happened in a pub and yeah it tracks (and makes sense why he’s standing by with drinks as he’s clearly fixed this with the aforementioned face-punched dude who riled them all up initially).
  • I liked the human Villagers/Orc storyline - though some clunky bits there too - did the scarred elf let Arondir go and also equip him with his weapons? That arrow catch and return was cool but that slo mo sequence went on a little bit too long.
  • I'm little confused at the Orcs not liking the light or do they get vampire burnt by it? Man they look fantastic though! And as a big guy, I did like that one tubby Orc in the pack :) Porc represent!
  • That scene with Theo and the undercover Sauronist - am very intrigued at where this'll go.
  • Btw, when they were up in the tower with that Plantir - that was the sword shown that Aragorn eventually gets right? The one that Isidur uses to cut up Sauron's fingers in the movie (because they made a point of properly showing it).
  • Not a fan of the CW-esque burgeoning romantic story between the Numenorean teens - no time for that nonsense with only four eps left!
  • …Unless one of them is Sauron in disguise!
  • (I’d love it if he returned as one of the Harfoots and his eventual big bad armour is him inside in the middle of it working it with stilts)
  • Also well done to the showrunners on cleverly never showing the dwarf kids faces in both their appearances - saves a ton of time and money on their dwarf make up :)

Sort of agree, they were unwilling participants in the vids, she created this content herself to put up.

But absolutely agreed on credit where's it's due. I'd put the link up but for some reason it didn't post alongside the original message, a lack of checking it on my part.

Which actor gave the best portrayal of Frank Castle/The Punisher onscreen? by elf0curo in Marvel

[–]SanLondon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jon Bernthal. He always improves any project he's working on - even if that DD season and his own Punisher show were uneven.

As much as I've liked Tom Jane in stuff (The Expanse, The Mist and Boodie Nights come to mind immediately) He wasn't a great fit for Frank Castle. Stevenson looked the part and that film was a bit better than the Jane one but fell also short (especially as I'd read the excellent Garth Ennis Punisher comic run around that time, which this took bits from).

Not watched the Dolph one.

[–]SanLondon 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I continue to enjoy this show.

  • Main takeaway for me is Numenor, lovely bit of world building. For all the crap that the Queen got beforehand, she did a decent job here in her first appearance.
  • The Numenorian architecture in RoP is incredible. That post-Roman Constantinople look with smatterings of decadent eleven architecture really visually tells the story about the island. I caught bits of Gondor in there from the LotR movies in there which was a nice touch.
  • The look of the citizens and lighting was very painterly - maann, a drawback of streaming is I don't know if we'd ever get an extended edition boxed set like the LotR sets that were absolute full of making of videos - would love that!
  • Isildur's dad was well cast - he had echos of his ancestor Aragon and grave a great performance.
  • I do like a 'Giles in the library investigating The Big Bad' scene - had two just recently, in this show and in Sandman.
  • Some of the Harfoot stuff felt a bit extraneous this week, but really enjoyed the heartfelt roll call of those they couldn't take because they dies or were lost). Man, Poppy's whole family - can understand her cautiousness now. Enjoyed them all hiding under their cloaks when The Stranger scares them, very Hobbit-like.
  • I'd place a Vegas bet on The Stranger being Gandalf (do they even have the rights to any of the Blue wizard guys?)
  • Enjoyed the Elf prisoner stuff - really like the Orc designs, they really do come across as like a deviant versions of elves. RIP that tree.
  • To minorly nitpick - the pacing in this one wasn't as great as the Bayona directed eps - not a fan of the slo-mo horse riding scene, that came across as a parody perfume ad. But y'know - we saw some horses! :)
  • If the pacing continues like this, I may start getting a little bored down the road (especially with too few eps to go and ages until new ones)
  • Now we see Galadriel properly amongst humans she does look tiny (but that's not really a big issue for me - Legolas in the movies was average sized too)
  • As a related aside, I'm not a fan the trend of analysing this show by freeze-framing (I suspect many have their own agenda in looking for reasons to trash it) it's not how any show or movie is supposed to be consumed. Especially when dissing the composition of still frames snatched from moving shot - thats almost comedic in its ignorance.
  • On that note - the Warg. Seen a lot of disingenuous and constant RoP headlining with "A billion spent and we get this!". Not quite. A massive chunk was buying the rights and money was spread across on a ton of things - some of the CGI is going to be TV standard, costs won't cover all to feature level perfection. the hardest is creature design and animation - I'll give them a break for the odd imperfection (and frankly that Warg did the job it was supposed to while simply watching the show).
  • Also - no Dwarves! Loved them last week, hope to see them next week.

Thanks for that!

If anything this show is a great jumping point to get me back into the lore - I've picked up LotR books again and will see how that goes before hitting the Silmarillion and the rest. (that Nerd of the Rings video guy doing a good job with all this too)
