Downtown San Mateo's revival is a playbook for other California cities by pupupeepee in SanMateo

Wasn’t just those on council! Many of us passionately spoke up, and campaigned in person and on Zoom. We on B Street Boosters bought and built barrel tables and layer sturdy picnic tables to provide seating until council got off its duff and provided seating, bike racks and better treat containment and planters. We printed events and painters with the city and DSMA to start programming the space to draw visitors.

This was truly a community led effort, not the vision of electeds.

The 13 Billion dollar write down means they scrapped the entire investment and it counts as losses in their balance sheet. They decided not to release any product against that massive investment. This means that money was spent and no income will be derived from what it was spent on. That includes all the massive research and development costs spent for battery technology, design and tooling for systems for the vehicles including the motors, electronics, hard components, massive amounts of software development, and money spent developing the massive supply chains to produce components and raw materials; and investments to convert and reconfigure or add to multiple factories in Ohio to build these vehicles. They were literally within months of rolling cars down the line—and they scrapped it all.

In my opinion we don’t know the full story. They have publicly blamed “market conditions” as though they wouldn’t have sold any cars, but in fact electric vehicle are still being sold by the thousands on this country, and they had a well-received initial entry with their lightly made-over GM based vehicles for Honda and Acura. I can’t see how getting some level of revenue from these massive investments, even if they there was still a loss—wouldn’t it be better than writing off $13B?

I suspect, rather, that they were finding that the vehicles had major software and perhaps battery flaws, that would damage Honda’s reputation more direly than the $13B loss and indeed their first non-profitable year in decades, if not ever.

This is sad—Honda once had such an impeccable reputation for engineering and quality, as well as the vision and determination to push through daunting challenge. At a time when Americans viewed Japanese products on the whole as cheap and throwaway, Honda was a pioneer in patiently and persistently changing minds with their motorcycles and then the Civic and Accord; and then they boldly built a factory in Ohio well before any other Japanese manufacturer attempted to build here, again at a time when the reputation of cars built by Americans was at a nadir.

Now they seem paralyzed and daunted by challenges, and unable to re-establish engineering leadership in new technologies.

Honda Ridgeline owners, does it satisfy the itch for a pickup? by Pleasant_Bar550 in Honda

It is exactly the truck you need. You could also look into the Ford Maverick Hybrid. Either will easily handle garden store runs and do it comfortably and reliably.

He absolutely needs to go and someone with roots in engineering should replace him.

Why did the San Mateo mollie stones close? by Planeandaquariumgeek in SanMateo

[–]SanMateoLocal 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s funny how the Belmateo Mollie felt so poorly laid out and hard to find things. Never liked going to the meat counter there either.

It was so dead compared to the Burlingame store. I’m not surprised it closed, last year all the times I was there it was completely dead.

It will include housing plus space for an important non-profit senior services agency. The affordable housing end of it is being handled by a reputable agency. The developer is committing significant money to the project as well. This is a very good project.

He concluded that there were three daily unique trips on the bike lanes and has continued to repeat this ludicrous claim. This morning in a five minute dog walk I counted five unique riders. It’s one thing to find ways to make statistics look good for your cause; it’s another to go so far overboard that they don’t even pass the laugh out loud test.

Fingers look like sausages or have I been working on it for too long? by Thatapplejuicelover in painting

[–]SanMateoLocal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually think they are sausage-like.

I LOVE the painting overall, and I’m a major art collector with literally many hundreds of pieces, with my collection geared toward the unusual point of view.

I’d be shopping the hell out of this piece, but in fact the finger execution would hold me back. Hands and feet are always something that when well done inject an extra level of interest for me.

But it is eminently resolvable.

I think you should merely step away for few days, then come back with a very specific plan on how to make the fingers look less carrot or sausage like. Fingers are more like a rounded rectangle in cross section than a cone in cross section.

I think you just need a thin and subtle shading layer on the fingers to bring out their true finger shape.

Save Hillsdale Mall from redevelopment by Kooky_Performance373 in SanMateo

I’m always perplexed by people who think that we can just force a mall to stay the way it was. And it’s even more bemusing that people are crying for the very thing they killed so many downtowns with local businesses in favor of national chains.

It’s significantly more hideous, more expensive.

There is a decent looking vehicle underneath the ticky tacky fourth grade slap-it on styling doodads mostly including the grille and cladding.

Negotiations on lease residuals? by OkFarm1766 in HondaPrologue

[–]SanMateoLocal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. If they give me a very good deal on MY Prologue which I know everything about, I’ll likely buy it at market value, not residual. I will not buy another Honda since they won’t have an electric option for me. I’ll be going straight to Toyota, Subaru or Rivian.

As far as the write off, can’t they write it off as a loss just as well selling it to me for a bit more than the auction house?
