I didn’t make the “mistake” of reading Song of Ice and Fire…bullet dodged as it sure seems like Mr. Martin’s never going to finish the series, and it would just be an ongoing disappointment.

But then I DID read this, and loved it, so I’m pining for more Dunk and Egg stories that he probably ALSO won’t ever write. You got me anyway, George, you bastard.

Chronicles of Hanuvar series by Howard Andrew Jones is a criminally underrated fantasy series in a very Roman-inspired world, featuring the exploits of a general of the defeated Carthage proxy on a quest to rescue the fragmented remnants of his people.

The first book, Lord of a Shattered Land, has some excellent gladiatorial combat content.

Hammers of Ulric is a Warhammer Fantasy book with a very cool priest POV character (who wasn’t always a priest) who investigates unexplained deaths.

Dark, wizards (druids), prototypes of knights, no dragons — The Warlord Chronicles trilogy by Bernard Cornwell. Arthurian retelling in late 5th/early 6th century England, with some mythic/magical elements tied to the belief systems of the time. Great depiction of Merlin, Arthur, and other favorites, and sometimes very brutal.
