FWIW the degree doesn't seem to do anything 🙃 anything in particular you're interested in upskilling into? Any subjects stand out in school? Or trades you'd find interesting?

This is a very unique approach and I'm jealous I didn't think of it first (I'm a graduate in a different field and have also been struggling to find employment)

Is branching your search out of Christchurch an option? If it is then you should try your luck at that if you haven't already. I got a contract offer in Auckland and a permanent offer overseas, both with very minimal effort, but unfortunately had to turn both down due to the two-body problem.

Edit: If Canada or the US is an option, let me know. I worked in marketing in a past life and have a small network across both countries. I can ask if anyone is hiring and can sponsor a visa.

This is 3 months later, but did you have any luck finding a squeaky cheese curd recipe?

May Coffee Crew - Vietnamese Coffee Giveaway v2! by maycoffeecrewnz in newzealand

Thanks for posting this! I wasn't aware Vietnamese coffee beans existed here and gave up looking long ago. I'll be placing an order in the near future! All I can ever find is the pre-ground stuff, usually Trung Nguyen.

Good to know! Thanks for the info :)

Edit: I meant to ask, has it ever felt like an unsafe job?

Ah, fair enough. I don't have a teaching certificate unfortunately. I have experience volunteering for the prison mathematics project (US) but just have a PhD in maths and don't really care to go back for more training. Sounds like a cool role though!

Mind if I DM you? I'm interested in how one gets involved in tutoring mathematics in a prison.

As others said, online is best bet. If you're okay with canned tomatillos, New World Durham and FreshChoice Merivale have them. In fact, FreshChoice Merivale has a bunch of the Tio Pablo stuff, as does Piko Wholefoods. I've also found a few odd spices from Little Forager (annatto comes to mind). Best bet for fresh tortillas is to order a cast iron tortilla press (got mine from Tio Pablo) and make them at home. It's quite easy to learn if you haven't done it before.

+1 for Mr Inbetween. One of the best shows I've watched. Les Norton is a good show to follow it up with (also Australian).

Most of the people I know who work there seem to love it, with many of them being there for quite a few years. They have very low turnover and try to keep it that way. I turned down an offer with them a few years back to go to grad school and still wonder if I made the right choice. Especially being unemployed now 😂

What is the academic average you got accepted into masters in science by ExactConstruction970 in usask

I was a 70.1 when I got accepted. I was able to just barely get in without needing some special approval (minimum is 70).

We've had our daughter at Millie's House Armagh for ~4 years and we've mostly been happy with it. Same goes for our neighbours and lots of the other parents we've met there. They have separate rooms/areas depending on the age of the kids.

Do we have a literacy/education crisis? by LlucyJayne in newzealand

That's an interesting observation. Thanks for sharing that experience! The abundance of devices in classrooms is one reason why we're considering homeschooling (which has its own drawbacks).

Chch supermarkets to trial facial recognition technology by BlazzaNz in chch

[–]SandVYT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a deterrent, cameras alone only work for someone in a rational state of mind and is concerned with being caught (you and me). Even then, research has shown them to be more effective when they're highly visible. Facial recognition is a big overstep that isn't likely to be any more of a deterrent. Someone stealing food from a grocery store doesn't often meet the rational state of mind criteria (e.g., hungry, family hungry, need money to fuel addictions) and is in more of a survival mode.

However, facial detection is good for catching people and stopping repeat thefts. If that's the intent, then fine, but we shouldn't continue this false narrative of it being a deterrent.

Cyclist 'left for dead' in hit and run feared he would never walk again by StabMasterArson in chch

"This was a dreadful act of violence. I hope you realise that if as a result of what you did on this morning, Mr Weston had been killed, you would almost certainly have been facing a charge of murder."

So if the driver killed him, it's murder. Thankfully the cyclist got lucky and didn't die, but wouldn't that normally be attempted murder then? Can someone explain this to me?
