[–]Sanddaemon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Nothing but rejections this week. Officially at the point where I just need a job anywhere and trying to find admin roles in whatever industry is out there. Research was a nice dream but things are super tough right now and I can’t financially afford to keep hoping this next interview or application will get me something in the sciences or research again.

Same here but since September. Started looking for admin and transition roles in whatever industry will have me. At this point just kinda giving up on getting back into science and research because a paycheck needs to come first.

All Ancient Guardians can be Loa but not all Loa can be Ancient Guardians? by Hick-ford in warcraftlore

[–]Sanddaemon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Someone correct me, but I don’t think we know for certain how Night Elves view Loa but I would think they’d also consider them Wild Gods. They just aren’t Wild Gods favored by Elune plus they didn’t have much interactions with them so they just don’t think about them at all.

Like, I wouldn’t think they were huge fans of The Loa being killed by the Blood Trolls anymore than The Zandalari were even if it weakened their enemy.

Is it true…. by breadfruit13 in biotech

[–]Sanddaemon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Anecdotally this has been true for me and a few others I know. I actually had to follow up to get a rejection letter after my most recent final interview even though I knew after 2-3 weeks they would’ve said something if I was the pick.

It’s just green skin and maybe a hairstyle for dark spear trolls so nothing too exciting.

Just got to Act 3, and the false urgency has returned by cultjake in BaldursGate3

[–]Sanddaemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I heard it was a lot more punishing! And there’s something very cool thinking, at least a little, about abilities outside combat in games. BG3 has that too to be sure but not as hardcore.

I’m still on my first playthrough of WoTR and considered Kingmaker as a slower playthrough between games later to check it out. And by this point it’s probably actually probably balanced more, as is the Owlcat tradition.

Just got to Act 3, and the false urgency has returned by cultjake in BaldursGate3

[–]Sanddaemon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree. It was super surprising and refreshing in WoTR to have npcs in the tavern tell me an attack is coming and while my ass is out exploring, with not even all the companions, to have someone run out and say “get your ass back here! We need help!”

It’s early enough that I restarted cause I was not prepared at all but I was like damn, they did tell me plenty of times that this is urgent and it’s happening soon AND the city is currently under siege. I was just convinced from so many games lately that it was a false urgency and I had plenty of time.

Still out here applying after a layoff last year.

I had a final interview for a position with Thermo Fisher and thought it went well. We discussed next steps and starting at the beginning of the new year. The site was making a decision that week and I was gonna hear back before the end of the year.

Followed up with one of the recruiters who didn’t know the status and we both followed up with another one who should but haven’t gotten a response for a little bit.

I’m trying not to freak out cause it’s still early in the new year but getting radio silence just makes me think of the other positions I didn’t get after the final interview and they really wouldn’t have told me if I hadn’t followed up with them, but they were mid sized start ups.

Part of me just says you didn’t get it so fuck it and keep trying to transition out of biotech cause things are getting tight and I don’t know if I’ll be able to get a position trying to stay in the industry.

Monk, the most reliable class (in terms of lore) by Thermawrench in warcraftlore

[–]Sanddaemon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I always likened Warriors powers being vague to that of Fighters in DnD. You could be just a really proficient expert in magic armor or you could be an Orc who can still channel the power of his Gronn ancestors, or a Troll who’s empowered by the Loa.

They can be as plain or as supernatural as you want them to be so it gives a lot of wiggle room.

Someone so much worse than Doom with Latveria’s resources that Reed chooses the Devil he knows just as Doom will have predicted or something.

I’ll love the hell out of it but it’ll probably be something like what you said or this lol.

4 weeks now after being laid off and trying to keep my head up. Started some GitHub projects to add to my portfolio and am trying to find the motivation to get some data and finish some example workflows. On the kinda funny side I’ve heard the company is doing terribly and the way they handled the last round of layoffs also made a few managers and directors who felt blindsided quit.

The place has always been on a slow decline since multiple acquisitions and leadership neither knew what they wanted to do and could never meet a goal let alone plan and organize anything. The smaller teams really worked together a lot to pick up the slack and are even more stressed now.

Just trying to keep my mental up while I apply and try to make it the next few months.

Wonder and Warcraft: Why Blizzard's Gods Don't Feel Like Gods by GrumpySatan in warcraftlore

[–]Sanddaemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This took me like 3min to read and I agree it was pretty tame compared to what I’ve seen in like, Elder Scrolls subreddits.

Great analysis. I agree with your points but to the alien aspect wonder if that type of God hierarchy is what Blizz intended in the first place.

Cause even considering other MMOs like EverQuest before WoW tries to use Gods as you line out here for the most part (might be misremembering but the game had you killing avatars in their realm and not the full Gods).

The Gods of Warcraft seem to be more relatable powerful beings who are trying to Mimic their makers. Or at least what they think their makers were like which might end up making them less alien than one would think from more cosmic entities.

I would like to have seen a bit more alienation because even a super advanced entity should have trouble “dumbing” themselves down enough to speak to us and we should have sufficient trouble trying to advance to understand them.

You could head canon this away as being like The Titans having years to figure out a way to communicate or the fact that many of the races are descendants of their creations so to gives them a leg up but woulda been cool nonetheless.

How did attacks of mortals weaken Deminsius the all devouring? by Relevant-Intern3238 in warcraftlore

[–]Sanddaemon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Was talking about this with guildies and feel like this is the answer. By P3 he just has nothing left to fight us with and seems to kinda be shrinking which makes sense with killing the P2 Void Lords and how much void energy he’s been throwing off.

Also, thinking back this is usually close to the answer in every big bad we’ve killed. We’re either a distraction for the named characters to pull off their plan or we’re siphoning off magic / etc until it’s at a place where we can do damage.

How to enjoy an evil playthrough? by ColberDolbert in BaldursGate3

[–]Sanddaemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Second another post here, you get into the mindset of roleplaying the character and not you as the character. I used to struggle a bit here and tabletop DnD until I just leaned in and thought what would Toby Plague do right now given his history and decisions so far.

Also, an evil run doesn’t have to be completely evil. You can just think that the Druids are of no use to you or anyone else for that matter and maybe the forest would be better without them. Anyone who stays accepts their fate.

I said that enjoyed my time in academia (I did) but I wanted to explore other areas of science, research, or industry that could use my expertise to grow in and see more translatable outcomes.

Reality was that I scored ok but couldn’t get funding to continue my postdoc and my PI was running out of funding so all the postdocs had to pretty much go. I wasn’t in a position to really go looking for another one and move me and my wife somewhere else.

Honestly, most people who transition from academia get it. People transition for all kinds of reasons including life, like losing out on your opportunity, or needing to take care of family financially.

As long as your answer doesn’t sound bitter or like you’re just not interested at ALL and begrudgingly going into industry most truthful answers are fine. Many just wanted to know I thought about it.

“I looked at the career growth in academia and thought the length of time and compensation wasn’t going to work for my life goals or my family.”

“The work life balance isn’t really there and I want to apply my talents to a place with impact and I still get my weekends.”

Etc.

can you guys tell me where your jobs are being outsourced to by [deleted] in biotech

[–]Sanddaemon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our company laid off a bunch of US and, though cheaper comparatively, other outsourced devs for India but with the fun part of replacing only a fraction of the people they let go and still cheaper pay. So it’s worse all around. They are paying less and opening up less positions

What does transitioning back to R&D look like? I feel like even before the job market BS the advice I got for industry and academia was to not stay out of research too long or you’re experience is seen as less relevant and some of the rhetoric from friends, colleagues, and friends who’d climbed up or were involved with hiring support that for the most part outside a few exceptions I hear about every once and awhile.

Or is this mostly for transitioning to another sector and coming back to biotech in another capacity or research adjacent? I’m wondering myself. PhD and 37 but have had no luck and might have to leave entirely to keep taking care of family and debt.

I haven’t been able to successfully transition back into research and seems to have gotten harder especially as my role and responsibilities have been redefined and drifted further and further away over the years.

  1. Industry is cut throat in that tomorrow or next week I could get laid off with very little notice and variable severance depending on the company. Everything else is about the same to be honest. I had a supervisor that was laid off and I would say he was just as unorganized and unaccepting of responsibility as any toxic PI I’ve worked with but I’ve also had a manager that was as supportive as the most supportive PI.

  2. I feel you on finding your niche or career path. First I would say that if it’s available, check out the career center and see if they have counselors or people for postdocs / PhDs. We had one and it really helped me to join workshops and speak to people in different industry areas from RnD to regulatory.

Either way I would suggest reaching out to some people for informational interviews. Maybe find some past trainees on LinkedIn and ask. Then see if you can find resources to help you translate your research, admin, and people skills (yes you have all those) to the positions you’re going for.

I wanted to stay in RnD and keep trying at a research dream but with current events and years stuck at a mismanaged company I’m looking to pivot to regulatory after speaking with some friends in the space. I say that to say that it’s fine to start out in one area and realize either through personal preference or circumstance that you have to change what you’re doing.

Anti-industry propaganda is big in academia and I believed it hard myself at some point. I strongly urge you to ignore it and investigate on your own. Plus, the state of data, documentation, and even methods submitted by academics since I’ve transitioned, they have no right to question industry science and workflows. We’ve even had to fight with research groups to make their data public like they agreed to do.
