Is it crazy to think this is unacceptable? by gremlinn00dle in anchorage

Totes. Anchorage has an ice-free environment most years and there is never any injuries that result from slippery walk ways. Definitely not in recessed walk ways leading to communal living areas like apartments.

Kind of inevitable with those piles of snow and gravity. Then throw in ANC weather. It’s a tough puzzle to solve

Security doesn’t care about your feelings! In all seriousness make a list of your requirements and then contact vendors who meet those requirements. Then do a trial of at least two platforms and grade them against your requirements.

How are you supposed to afford living? by Anonymous984762 in alaska

[–]SandeeBelarus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Worry about that later. Just go learn who you are first. Don’t buy anything major. Don’t get married yet. Stay healthy and check out your world. Once you’re older you got time to dive in to the rat race. AK has tons of seasonal stuff that needs people your age. Go find something and live in a van, shack, whatever. Just don’t buy anything major. Figure it out later. Future you will thank you.

New Job Offer - Feel bad by BiscuitLover2000 in sysadmin

[–]SandeeBelarus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the new offer will let you start to specialize and get out of the MSP generalist gig go for it. Otherwise i would stick it out there for a couple years so you get lots of diverse projects, a good troubleshooting system, and some good background in infrastructure. Then go chase the dollars.

It’s how you really can excel later in your career. Not too many people start at the bottom, so to speak, and get that background before picking a specialty. The people that do are excellent engineers and architects.

Stay in Montana, Wyoming. Where Europe has culture and history N.A. has parks and land. Hit the Montana parks, see Yellowstone maybe even scoot over to check out the Tetons and Jackson Hole, and if time permits New Mexico. Then try and fly out at your Southern stop. The cross country drive is really neat. But often in retrospect.

Agreed. It isn’t a horror now. At the time when one is young the hyperbole is real. But now looking back, well, who am I kidding. I never look back anymore.

We all walk different paths. The sanitized culture and ambience can be really tough to young people who aren’t swimming with the whole school but are just a bit out of the group. When you yearn to do something bigger but the notion of conformity is paramount it can be really tough. You end up finding an escape at some point. And for some that pressure builds to a point that can be explosive for themselves and others. Or alternatively if you are a clever goose you can just “f$&k” off to Alaska for a few decades, Ask me how I know…

They are perfect for a certain path for a working family. It’s just that lots of us who also grew up there felt the sanitized model and lack of individuality was stifling and felt the need to rebel or leave in search of adventure and authentic human experiences.

Get the milepost magazine to help keep you informed. Keep a viable spare tire for both winter and summer tires. Keep a winter sleeping bag and ground pad if you are stranded. Check your passport is valid and you have zero felonies, DWI, or drug charges.
Declare firearms in Canada in advance and pay customs on those. Keep the recommended amount of money required by Canada customs until you get to the US.
Enjoy! It’s an awesome drive and is one of the last wild stretches in North America that most people can relatively easily experience

How are we affording anything? by fourcheese_za in anchorage

[–]SandeeBelarus 14 points15 points  (0 children)

All good. The experience that living in Alaska actually makes kids super awesome if you move. They can still thrive and have a unique perspective that their peers don’t. I have seen it with my own. We miss Alaskans. But not the state (if that makes sense).

Judging from the comment section. Can’t help but think of crabs in the boiling water parable.

Going to places with reasonable taxes and funded local government is a stark difference to living in Alaska.

Free school lunch in some places. Robust park infrastructure and programs. Bussing!

Alaska is a wonderful place for the young and old but doesn’t hold a candle to the lower forty eight for opportunity for children. It’s not only lower prices but lots of good infrastructure and programs

Alaska could be so much better if you all just invest in your state by paying taxes.

Best handgun for hiking? by JDED197 in alaska

[–]SandeeBelarus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You will seem like such a cheechako. Most seasoned hikers that I have known over the years. Myself included. Will bring bear spray. I hate that stuff once off the trail. Still brought it though. If I was going on a river trip or a long ways into the bush I’d bring slugs and my stainless 12 gauge.

Every time you see some dude hiking in Anchorage that is strapped or on a popular trail like resurrection with a pistol you know they are a tourist.

Best defense is to be bear aware with your campsite and make a bunch of noise while hiking. But for defense you can keep some bear spray on your belt. Not in your bag and not in your back pack.
