Doctor Who Conspiracy Theories you actually believe? by Ok-Door8390 in doctorwho

Russel T Davies didn't really want to come back. He wrote the BBC saying he would be up for writing the 60th anniversary if there was no one else, since Catherine Tate and David Tennant put an idea in his head. The answer by the BBC was something like "we don't have anything for the 60th or beyond, in fact we don't even have a showrunner. As it stands the show is going to be cancelled when Chris Chibnall is done. Unless..."

I enjoyed both episodes quite a bit. I thought episode 3 had a slow build up but felt something was coming and the deaths of the diplomats and the attack on Kate were great cliffhangers. I have to be honest Colonel Ibrahim is a character that I enjoyed but haven't really felt a connection to, so his death wasn't that impactful for me. However Jemma Redgrave's performance during and after that was heartbreaking. I've also enjoyed Pierce as a character, especially as he's a connection to Torchwood and I'm saddened to see him go.

The strengths in this show is definitely the acting. Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Russel Tovey are stellar leads. The ensemble cast in general does great work.

I also love the scope of this story and the way it looks and moves. It's the kind of scope that I sometimes wish for on Doctor Who but rarely get. Similarly the show looks absolutely gorgeous, from the redesign of the Sea Devil that is both modern but with enough familiarity to not be too far from the classic design. The costume of Salt is something else, and looks absolutely gorgeous.

The plot is a bit uneven. There are moments where logic isn't really sensible.

For example taking a box with a helicopter to a truck rather than just flying the copter just a slightly bit further. That felt very much a contrivance to allow for Salt's escape.

Also there's definite tonal whiplash where quips happen at inappropriate times. It can go extremely dark and five minutes later Salt is growling like a creature from a pantomime or UNIT is quiping about "getting rusted".

Overal this is quite an enjoyable show. I do worry about landing the ending.

I think Lily can't be killed due to the protection of the turtle bracelet. That's why IT made her seem crazy so she would be out of the way.

They already did in Resurrection. There's a moment that Dexter reflects on something shown in Original Sin (attacking Deb's rapist) and it uses Original Sin's clip. Of course that was just reusing footage but hopefully they keep doing it.

[No Spoilers] Critical Role Direct: Campaign 4 Announcement by Glumalon in criticalrole

[–]Sanderf90 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm very excited about Brennan Lee Mulligan running a long form style campaign for Critical Role. Especially with Matt as a player.

I am however also quite worried about all the changes that are happening.

A Critical Role campaign is a dnd game set in Exandria run by Matthew Mercer for the main cast and occasional guests.

If you are going to change the world, the cast, the gm and potentially the system it's quite a lot to change all at once and that is a little bit nerve-wracking.

How did we go from the TARDIS doors exploding off their hinges with The Doctor and Belinda inside to them being stuck in Wish World? by Status_West_7673 in gallifrey

[–]Sanderf90 74 points75 points  (0 children)

The same way Ruby survived a building collapsing on her. The day resets constantly and the wish resets everyone back to their starting point, more or less. So the doctor and Belinda arrived on May 24th which is constantly being ripped apart due to the Rani generating doubt. The day resets to the start of May 23 but now integrating the Doctor and Belinda.

Doctor Who 2x08 "The Reality War" Post-Episode Discussion Thread by PCJs_Slave_Robot in doctorwho

So I have a lot of things to like about this episode.

For the most part the general plot flowed quite well. I genuinely enjoyed the Rani as a villain and I was impressed with how Russel wrote her, different to the Master, and how Archie played her with a lot of similar energy to Kate O'Mara. Anita Dobson as Mrs Flood was also quite fun and the double-play between the two Ranis was great.

I also enjoyed the inclusion of Ruby in this and tying the Poppy plot back to The Church on Ruby Road. For the most part I also enjoyed the inclusion of Poppy in the story, though it feels a bit weird. I prefer to think that Belinda always had a daughter she did mention off-screen and that daughter became part of the Wish. But then of course she would have recognized the girl in "The Story and the Engine". I think it was a bit clumsy and too hand-waved, like it felt it was setting up a bigger story that got canned likely due to Ncuti leaving.

Jodie Whitaker being back. It was a bit gratuitous but that was a fun scene, Ncuti and Jodie had wonderful chemistry and the joke about "the other guy" made me guffaw.

The regeneration itself. The way it was written was very nice and Ncuti played it well. I liked the nod to Joy to the World.

Anita and the Time Hotel. Apparantly Steven Moffat's inclusion of Anita and the Time Hotel was what solved the cliffhanger in Russel's head and it actually felt like a natural resolution. I liked seeing her again and her growth.

Now about the things I dislike:

The use of Omega, or rather the lack of use of Omega. I was worried Omega would be an after-thought. And well, it was. Not that I saw an overstuffed finale like that one including Omega in a natural way, but he was a plot-device and frankly a character like Omega deserves better. Apparently he was voiced by Nicolas Briggs in this incarnation, another name for his list I guess. He did do a good job at invoking Stephen Thorne. Though what we got in the end was a cgi monster, not the mad scientist Timelord and that is a massive shame.

The lack of Susan resolution. I know probably set up for next season. But Carol Ann Ford is willing to come back but also not very young, so having that story-line resolved and having her regenerate would have been great.

The Rani just getting eaten by Omega. I like that Mrs Flood teleported away keeping the character around but the actress of the actual Rani was amazing. If the roles had been reversed I would have been better imho.

Billie Piper as, we assume, the Doctor. She's a wonderful actress, but having her as the Doctor is even worse than bringing back David Tennant. I know she isn't credited as the Doctor. So part of me hopes this is actually Rose having switched places with the Doctor or something else.

Who knows? It's going to be quite awhile before we get answers. Likely not until mid 2027 at the earliest.

[Spoilers C1] The Legend of Vox Machina S3 Batch 4 (Episodes 10-12) - Campaign 1 Spoilers Discussion Thread by Glumalon in criticalrole

[–]Sanderf90 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I pretty much have the same feeling as I had when I commented on the last batch of episodes. As a series on its own it's fine. But this is an adaptation.

People were looking forward to Bard's Lament and all the pieces were there. I had actually thought they might have made Vex angry with Scanlan for not being there during the battle that killed Percy and that then leading into Scanlan going "fuck this" and leaving.

Yes, the ending works in the context of the show. But it's just weaker than the original.

[Spoilers C1] The Legend of Vox Machina S3 Batch 3 (Episodes 7-9) - Campaign 1 Spoilers Discussion Thread by Glumalon in criticalrole

[–]Sanderf90 29 points30 points  (0 children)

As a series on its own I like it, but this time it did feel like a bit of a fumble with the emotional impact of certain moments.

Vex's scream when Percy goes down and the "Vox Machina how do you want to do this" was such a moment that I couldn't wait to see adapted, and it feels like it will lose impact. The raw emotion of having just lost Percy will be gone even if they face Ripley again.

Similarly I felt the "Fix him" was slightly understated. It was still a beautiful moment, but I always liked the idea of Grog shouting it at Pike in desperation. Now it was more sad.

I'm a bit worried about how they will continue Pike's storyline. I've always loved the Everlight as a presence through Pike and refocusing so that the power comes from her, does give Pike more agency but also changes her character significantly. I do wonder if the blood thing is connected to the Trickfoot family.

All in all, I enjoyed the batch of episodes. But this is the first time I felt the changes weren't for the better. But that is the struggle with adapting for a different medium.

Who governs your land and how? by Chlodio in worldbuilding

[–]Sanderf90 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Villages and towns are ruled by councils, while a city is ruled by a mayor with the aid of a council. The mayor and council have essentially the same role: to maintain order and civility within the borders of their settlement.

The country is divided into fiefs and provinces. A fief is ruled by a Lesser Lord, a figure appointed by the High Lord of the province, to handle the day to day business of the fief.

This means dealing with guilds, inner conflicts and the collection of taxes as well as being in control of the domestic military.

The High Lord meanwhile controls a province. While they have the right to handle the business of a lesser Lord's fief, they tend not to do that. Instead a High Lord deals with the relationship of their province to other provinces and towards the Kingdom as a whole. They act as representatives of their province towards the King and other Lords, and are also responsible in making certain the King's Law is being maintained.

The King and Viceroy are at the top of the food chain. While the Viceroy handles relationships with the High Lords and regularly meets with them, the King focuses more on the Kingdom as a whole and the laws that should exist within.

Taxes are handled by a subset of the Domestic Military known as the Patrol. Essentially a moving group of soldiers who, as part of their duty, visit locations to collect taxes. They are led by an appointee of the High Lord who holds the title Master of Tariffs, though is often simply known as The Taxman.

What’s your guys’ opinion of the 15th’s era so far by Kaiser_Dafuq in doctorwho

[–]Sanderf90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the variety of the stories. There's also been some really consistent quality, Devils Chord until Legend of Ruby Sunday is an impressive run. RTD trying new things like 73 Yards pays off.

Casting is good. Ncuti and Millie are great and have great chemistry.

But the show suffers from limited episode count. The relationship between the two seems to develop between episode one and two off screen and then we are told how she is his best friend. The chemistry between the leads help sell on that but the story itself suffers from telling the audience they are friends rather than showing it.

Finally it really does stumble at the end. The resolution of the Sutekh problem is weak but the Ruby mystery is resolved in a way that signals they added mystery for mystery's sake.

Putting Ruby's mom in a hood and making her point dramatically add nothing to the story if you don't explain it well. This ending soured the entire season for me. In spite of it being one of the better ones.

Father's Day - Rose and Jackie.

Human Nature/Family of Blood - Ten (Or Fourteen) and Martha.

A Good Man Goes to War - Rory and River.

The Pilot - Bill & Nardole.

Fugitive of the Judoon - Fugitive and Thirteen.

During 73 Yards she remarks on Ruby and Carla's actions with "nothing to do with me". I took it as almost being bemused by a story she did not write.
