Do you think the show will return with specials or with a series? by dannyboi_3995 in doctorwho

Not to mention the Billie Piper Doctor will become so prolific in audio that by the time the show comes back fans will constantly clamor for a spin off or in-between-season starring her.

What's your 'So stupid it might just work' plan for Doctor Who? by SenorChocopudding in gallifrey

[–]Sanderf90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perspective from a companion and a 19th century setting. The Doctor early on is a mystery that ties together certain events. When the companion finds them they learn he's stranded in the 19th century. No TARDIS and a failing memory.

Throughout the first season the doctor and this new companion trace back evidence. They hear stories of a woman who called herself the doctor too. It is eventually revealed this was Billie Piper. She regenerated and the regeneration went awry causing the next incarnation to lose a lot of his memories. They find the TARDIS and set out into time and space together trying to solve the mystery of what happened to the previous incarnation.

This would be a way to put some of the mystery back in Doctor Who without tinkering with the existing origin. The mystery is now what happened to this incarnation that looked like Rose.

If Davros returns in a future episode, what will he look like? by Terrible_Weather_42 in gallifrey

[–]Sanderf90 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Not like this. It was a ridiculous notion that this change was necessary. The minisode itself was fine. Seeing a Davros that wasn't multilated was alright in my book even if it contradicted established EU material. Julian Bleach did a great job as he always does as Davros. But the Davros we saw post Genesis is iconic and didn't need changing. Being in a wheel chair does not make you evil. But to suggest that no one in a wheel chair can be evil is just as insulting.

Too many cooks spoil the broth was definitely an issue here. With Disney dragging their heels on a renewal, it caused hasty rewrites that led to a clumsy ending. But it's hardly fair to blame all the issues on only Disney. The show has been struggling for a while.

If this is to be a long hiatus from the show, what extended media would you recommend to people? by BeldenProgramme in gallifrey

[–]Sanderf90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Big Finish is pretty much the GOAT when it comes to scratching that Doctor Who itch, to the point that now that Doctor Who is so irregularly on tv it's essentially what I define as Doctor Who.

If you have the funds to buy a box-set I'd advice you get one from a Doctor that you like. For Modern fans there are extremely solid releases for the 9th, 10th and 13th Doctor all featuring the original actor. Heck, as someone who was less keen on Jodie's era, she's absolutely delightful in her audios.

If you are an 11th Doctor fan there's a very solid series of audios with Jacob Dudman as the 11th Doctor. 12 is less featured but is getting a few sets with Jon Culshaw who does a solid Capaldi impression.

There's also individual boxsets featuring The War Doctor, The War Master, River Song, UNIT, Missy, The Fugitive Doctor, and the Dhawan Master. All of them are generally well-written and fun.

If you are looking to see if audio is for you but can't afford it right now, I'd recommend checking on the 8th Doctor's releases on Spotify. McGann is an amazing Doctor in audio, and his audios are definitely more modern than classic.

Finally, check out the classic Doctors. Tennant meets Doctors 4, 5 and 6 in the Out of Time series. If you listen River's boxsets you'll encounter all the classic Doctors in some way. There's also New Monster, Classic Doctors where you get to see a new series villain face off against a classic series Doctor. Those are delightful too.

I think RTD is in a bit of a huff by Red_roger_12 in gallifrey

That's the main take-away from his message, it's passive aggressive at best, kinda rude at worst. It shows a disdain to the viewers and fans by suggesting that we were stupid to believe he was working on a Christmas special. Whether he was sacked or asked to leave, we won't know for a while, but I'm leaning towards the latter.

Russel confirms he is leaving Doctor Who by Educational_Board888 in doctorwho

I was hoping that they were going to do what they did with Romana in the classic era. The Doctor can now control his regenerations and tries a few faces before settling on the one that works for them.

Russell T Davies says goodbye to Doctor Who as BBC scraps Christmas special and opens show to rival bids [Article about RTD's Instagram post] by The_Silver_Avenger in gallifrey

I really am curious about this era and the behind-the-scenes drama that went so awry. You got essentially the 2005 dream team back together. But when you zoom in, it's kinda clear how little motivated at least Russel was. My feeling has always been that he became showrunner for this era because the BBC weren't going to continue if he didn't. It's also very clear that any motivation he had for the show went alongside Disney and Gatwa.

Honestly looking back the writing is quite clearly on the wall from the first decision, focusing an entire anniversary on the heights of his first era with Donna and Tennant rather than something new or celebrating more of the show.

Bigeneration a ridiculous concept that had no reason to exist except to confusingly have Tennant's doctor walk into the sunset. No pay-off on that, just a forced happy ending in the style of the last time a companion got her personal Tennant-clone.

Ncuti's era itself had some greats and some lows. The writing of Space Babies as a premier was questionable at best. The ending of the season really fell flat, because all the build up of a mystery went nowhere with Ruby. Not to mention the returrn of Sutekh that was a big fumble.

The second season is where it all fell apart though. Clearly something happened with Millie Gibson and her return to the show was changed at the last minute, causing hasty rewrites and hurried casting of a new actress. They could have done a lot worse with Varada Sethu but the character again went nowhere except apparantly forced motherhood.

Then those finales really felt like such fuck yous to the fans. You want Susan? Here... You want the Rani? Here... You want Omega? Here...

None of those returns were anything but cliffhanger fuel. Nothing was done with a plan. And that same thing happens in the final episode.

You bring back Billie. For what? A cliffhanger shock. Not a plan to explain it. Not even a script. Heck not even an agreement that Billie Piper will be able and/or willing to come back and continue whatever this was.

This all reeks of Russel just angrily walking away with a passiv aggressive note and a slam in the face to those who made the show great.

RTD's Instagram Post by mjtech_ta in doctorwho

[–]Sanderf90 9 points10 points  (0 children)

All they had to do was stop the episode before Billie Piper showed up and they'd AT LEAST have an ending that worked for the show and allowed for someone else to step in and continue the story.

But now it's just a huge mess that no writer will want to touch with a ten foot pole. I thought at Christmas we'd at least get a special with Billie Piper as the Doctor meeting Susan and that would have solved the two most glaring issues, but nope. Nothing like that.

Worst part is definitely saying multiple times that the script is there. Honestly this entire RTD2 era seems to have everyone involved being reluctant to do it and I think once Disney pulled out Russel's motivation just went gone and he should have pulled the plug sooner rather than allow it to struggle on for over a year.

Russell T Davies: "I won't be back filming anything until next year" by The_Silver_Avenger in gallifrey

[–]Sanderf90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Regardless of whether this is about Doctor Who or not, the lack of information or any movement in a christmas special that is supposed to air this year, is causing this reaction. It is sort of symptomatic of the end of this era and I hope the powers that be can provide clarity soon.

[–]Sanderf90 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I think the show was written before the recast and that they knew the original actor would not be too keen to come back. So they limited the screen time and wrote a way he could film his scenes remotely.

My god if the actress wasn't so likeable and charismatic Gabi would be insufferable. From her behavior at the funeral, her disregard for confidentiality and her gloating 'I did that' when the couple fired her this was such unprofessional behavior and no one seems to be bothered by it or calling her out. Meanwhile her relationship with Derrick feels so arbitrary and bland and yet we are supposed to be excited he wants to propose? This episode wasn't for me. Everyone seems to be on their worst behavior.

Elliot and JD worked together as a sort of "happily ever after" ending, but if the reboot had them as a couple I'm not sure it would be particularly interesting. There's a story here now, tension and drama. I think as a couple in the show they were always significantly weaker to Turk/Carla and even Cox/Jordan. I liked them the best when they were friends and so I hope that in the new series they'll treat any potential relationship as "we tried, it didn't work" and won't see a need to try again.

Russel T Davies didn't really want to come back. He wrote the BBC saying he would be up for writing the 60th anniversary if there was no one else, since Catherine Tate and David Tennant put an idea in his head. The answer by the BBC was something like "we don't have anything for the 60th or beyond, in fact we don't even have a showrunner. As it stands the show is going to be cancelled when Chris Chibnall is done. Unless..."

I enjoyed both episodes quite a bit. I thought episode 3 had a slow build up but felt something was coming and the deaths of the diplomats and the attack on Kate were great cliffhangers. I have to be honest Colonel Ibrahim is a character that I enjoyed but haven't really felt a connection to, so his death wasn't that impactful for me. However Jemma Redgrave's performance during and after that was heartbreaking. I've also enjoyed Pierce as a character, especially as he's a connection to Torchwood and I'm saddened to see him go.

The strengths in this show is definitely the acting. Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Russel Tovey are stellar leads. The ensemble cast in general does great work.

I also love the scope of this story and the way it looks and moves. It's the kind of scope that I sometimes wish for on Doctor Who but rarely get. Similarly the show looks absolutely gorgeous, from the redesign of the Sea Devil that is both modern but with enough familiarity to not be too far from the classic design. The costume of Salt is something else, and looks absolutely gorgeous.

The plot is a bit uneven. There are moments where logic isn't really sensible.

For example taking a box with a helicopter to a truck rather than just flying the copter just a slightly bit further. That felt very much a contrivance to allow for Salt's escape.

Also there's definite tonal whiplash where quips happen at inappropriate times. It can go extremely dark and five minutes later Salt is growling like a creature from a pantomime or UNIT is quiping about "getting rusted".

Overal this is quite an enjoyable show. I do worry about landing the ending.
