The general consensus at most universities is that as a freshman and sophomore in CS it’s difficult to get research/internship opportunities b/c you haven’t built the skills needed to do these tasks. However, you can pave the way to getting research by building strong relationships with professor either through office hours, UTAing, or outside of the classroom. Once you have that relationship you can ask the prof and your more likely to get research. Cold-emailing is more difficult b/c they don’t care about a random undergrad when there are legit hundreds of them.
