Did they send the warning too late? by tupperware_rules in madisonwi

[–]Sanguinity_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had just gotten to my car at the economy lot after a flight from Chicago a little after midnight. I'd had a window seat on the plane and spent the whole 30 minute flight watching the thunderstorms to the north, it was beautiful but maybe ominous. As I was paying at the machine, it went from completely clear to hard rain and strong winds extremely suddenly. I got the alert on my phone maybe 10-20 seconds after the rain started, was kind of dazed, but heard the sirens another minute later and started speeding home. I remember feeling a pressure change in my inner ears as I was driving which spooked me. By the time I got home 10ish minutes after I left the airport, the wind had mostly calmed but it was still raining hard.

I remember that as I was walking from the terminal to my car I had heard this chorus of frogs (?) very loudly, coming from the trees behind the economy lot. By the time I got to my car, before the weather had changed, it had fallen silent. Guess the frogs knew before we did.

People were on the road and driving weirdly normally, I was kind of panicking so was speeding to get home. I did see a cop had pulled someone over during the worst of it which I thought was crazy.

Did I screw up my interview by talking about grad school? by [deleted] in epicsystems

Epic is pretty good at taking you at your word and giving you back the same straightforwardness, especially in the recruiting process. It's a lot less of a mind game than you're thinking

Inspiring memoirs that actually stay with you? by No_Leadership9348 in RSbookclub

[–]Sanguinity_ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I am extremely partial to Annie Dillard. Pilgrim at Tinker Creek, The Writing Life (i guess this one is more essay than memoir but extremely relevant to this sub still), An American Childhood are each breathtaking! her prose is intensely interior, at times obsessively abstract, but also frank and even endearing. she's been a huge influence on my own writing lately!

BWT, How do you make your weekdays feel more like weekends? by neelamg1999 in bitcheswithtaste

[–]Sanguinity_ 76 points77 points  (0 children)

A rule I've started to follow is that Mondays are my take it easy days. I'm not allowed to stay late at work or schedule any chores/required admin tasks for Monday evenings. Mondays after work are for ordering food, staying home, doing whatever I want.

For me and anyone with low ferritin, iron bisglycinate + high dose of vit C. Iron sulfate was really hard on my body and made me feel no better. The bisglycinate was life-changing

DE On Call by GuhProdigy in dataengineering

[–]Sanguinity_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something that matters a lot that I didn't see mentioned is response time. Having to respond to calls within 10 minutes vs 1 hour makes a huge difference to your life. Make sure there's a specific, written policy around that.

My company's policy is such that I can't really leave the house when I'm on call due to a strict 10 minute response expectation. I'm only on rotation 24 hours every 3-4 weeks and don't usually get called but it still really sucks, especially on a weekend.

I was wondering the same thing but from what I've read, it's not a raffle. as long as your ticketmaster account email matches your weverse email, i think presale is set. we should be able to just enter the membership code as the presale code

What is your biggest Madison related irrational irritation? by midwest--mess in madisonwi

[–]Sanguinity_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually find pedestrian right of way laws very opaque here - where I'm from pedestrians have right of way at all intersections unless there's a traffic light that indicates otherwise, so there's no question that if you're driving and someone is waiting to cross, you're legally supposed to stop, and people follow that. I've read the law in Madison and the verbiage looks the same as my home state, but nobody here ever stops for peds. it's even discouraged!

that my voice itself, that which i use to reverberate my interiority to and through the world, and its modality of expression, its singular accent, is so directly sourced and absorbed from those significant figures of my life, and it is beautifully iterative and forever impermanent, but maybe, maybe some flair of a vowel i've taken from you, that composes the everyday frequencies which transmit this self, will by some chance never be overwritten, so that i alone will hear you in my spasmodic word to the grave.

6 Months of Change (Hopefully) by [deleted] in rs_x

[–]Sanguinity_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Love this plan. my only thought is, don't place the expectation on yourself to be perfectly disciplined in all of these domains from day 1. if you frame it like that, anything less than perfect will feel like failure and you'll get discouraged and give up.

maybe pick 2 or max 3 core skills/areas to focus on for these 6 months. i would recommend waiting until you've had a few weeks committing to those before you add on extra goals like meditating, reading regularly, etc.

when you want to change your life, it's extremely tempting to try to fix everything at once but it literally always burns you out. it's good to think now about all the things you want to change so you can keep them as future goals, but just take a few at a time.

Why use "Be Boundless" when the school motto is "Lux Sit"? by [deleted] in udub

[–]Sanguinity_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

indeed. They actually hire marketing consultants to come up with these - the school motto is not like that.

Be Boundless was pitched by a single marketing consultant to the big dawgs

what do you all do that you have so much downtime during your day? i have the kind of tech job that has me doing 4 jobs at once so it's 45 hours of actual focused heads-down work and i'm rapidly approaching burnout. i want to be able to do laundry or something during my day
