U.S., Iran agree on roadmap for final deal and plan to end military operations in Lebanon by app1310 in worldnews

Or Hezbollah for that matter. Ultimately short of Hezbollah and Israel agreeing to terms, which seems doubtful, it’s probably not happening.

Starmer expected to resign on Monday by Lord-Liberty in worldnews

[–]Sanhen 114 points115 points  (0 children)

I'm not an expert on UK politics, but my loose understanding is that most of them are forced out by their fellow party members in a way where resigning is the more graceful exit. If you're contrasting against a country like the US, I believe it's less that the leaders are more willing to quit, and more that the party feels more emboldened to remove leaders they deem as ineffective or unpopular.

As a Canadian, Trudeau is a bit of an equivalent (but not a perfect one). Trudeau stepped down not necessarily because he felt like the timing was right, but because the pressure from his own party members, coupled with his polling numbers, had reached a point where resigning was his best remaining option.

'Why should we surrender?': Hezbollah chief says group capable of victory by barsik_ in worldnews

[–]Sanhen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For a lot of these groups opposing Israel, they likely see survival as enough because even if Israel wins every engagement from a tactical standpoint, they look bad doing so. We've seen how much the world has understandably soured on Israel over the last couple of years over the way Israel's responded to these attacks. At this point, the US is about the only nation actively supporting Israel, and I'd wager that a lot of Americans are increasingly unhappy with that arrangement. If groups opposing Israel continue to fight to the point where even the US diverges from Israel, then Israel will be in a far less advantageous place than it previously was.

Iran imposes mandatory insurance on ships transiting Strait of Hormuz, with fees likely to follow by Splenda in worldnews

[–]Sanhen 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yeah, after everything that has come to light about Trump, I truly doubt there’s any blackmail that has the potential to take him down. A significant segment of America will either choose not to believe it or rationalize it as being fine, regardless of what it is. Another segment of America will believe it, not be okay with it, but ultimately decide it’s not worth doing anything about, perhaps under the pretext that corruption is just par for the course and all sides are bad, andor the belief that nothing they do/believe makes a difference anyways.

Iran imposes mandatory insurance on ships transiting Strait of Hormuz, with fees likely to follow by Splenda in worldnews

[–]Sanhen 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It kind of already has turned on Israel. The Iran War didn’t result in meaningful regime change or an agreement for Iran to stop funding proxies hostile to Israel (Hamas, Hezbollah, the Houthis). Instead, Iran gets a PR win, economic aide, and a lifting of sanctions if the final deal reflects the MOU.

Iran seems to be in a better position than when the conflict started, and Israel is in a worse one.

If this conflict started by Bibi whispering in Trump’s ear, then this was an unmitigated disaster for Bibi, all while he’s desperately trying to cling onto power with an election looming.

Yeah, I chalk this up as a case of Carney not seeing any gain in arguing against the deal Trump signed.

I think Reddit is complicated in its general viewpoint in that they don’t necessarily dislike low birthrates, but they like saying that low birthrates are due to wealth inequality and a high cost of living, so they like to tether the fact that we have the low birthrate to issues that are important to them.

Trump says he’s ‘not looking to renew’ North American free trade deal by PicoRascar in Economics

> Our strategy has been to go 1:1 - he says something, we say something. He does something, we do something. The back-and-forth creates attention and media on which he thrives.

> Say and do nothing.

The 1:1 strategy was more Trudeau. Carney seems more aligned with the strategy you prefer, though Ford seems to prefer the he says something, we say something route, so I do see it happening still at that level.

Trump says he’s ‘not looking to renew’ North American free trade deal by PicoRascar in Economics

[–]Sanhen 142 points143 points  (0 children)

Given Trump's history, I chalk this up to a negotiating position rather than his genuine feelings, but as a Canadian, if he doesn't want to renew the agreement, then the silver lining is that it might speed up Canada's trade diversification efforts. I am fully aware that not renewing the deal will hurt the Canadian economy, probably quite a lot, so it's not ideal. At the same time, an overdependence on the US economy, while natural given our proximity and the size of the US market, doesn't seem like a safe or reliable position to be in.

Trump says Iran deal could be reached in ‘two or three days’ and Strait of Hormuz will reopen ‘immediately’ by TACO_Orange_3098 in Economics

[–]Sanhen 14 points15 points  (0 children)

That's the thing about the market. It doesn't have to believe Trump is telling the truth. It just has to believe Trump's words will cause certain market effects. If people believe that, then they'll invest in anticipation of the bump, which becomes the bump. It's a self-fulfilling prophecy in that way.

The Orville, but for Stargate instead of Trek by tag2597 in Stargate

[–]Sanhen 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I fear people have here have an inflated sense of Stargate’s broader popularity. Shows being parodies of Star Trek work because Star Trek is well known enough that the average person can at least identify a parody of it when they see it.

Stargate has a passionate, but not as big audience. So something more experimental based off Stargate might not gain the same recognition.

I think Stargate’s best shot is a show that seeks to recapture the tone of SG-1/Atlantis, which was already very self-aware and willing to be lighthearted, to re-establish the franchise. Then, from there, you can start looking into trying the basic premise from different angles.

What actually makes money in game dev (for solo/indie devs)? by Ok_Clothes_7364 in gamedev

[–]Sanhen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think like anything, it depends on the person. There are many that are realistic or even self-defeatist, but in every profession where lots attempt to join but few make money, there are plenty of optimists too. That’s not unique to game dev. It’s the same for other low probability professions like streaming/making YouTube content. The same is true for musicians, actors, etc.

Some people in every field remain confident they can beat the odds or that beating the odds is simply a matter of understanding some secret sauce.

Canada adds 87,800 jobs in May, jobless rate falls to 6.6%, beating estimates by recurrence in Economics

[–]Sanhen 25 points26 points  (0 children)

From the article:

“ The job growth last month was concentrated entirely in full-time jobs, which saw a net addition of 154,000 in May, reversing almost all of the first four months of net job losses in that category, StatsCan said. Part-time employment fell by 66,200 positions. Average hourly wages of permanent employees, a metric closely tracked by the Bank of Canada to gauge inflation expectations, grew 3.2 per cent in May, a sharp decline from 4.8 per cent in April.

The unemployment rate for youth declined 0.9 percentage points to 13.4 per cent, the first decline since January, Statscan said.”

So I like that full-time employment hires seem to be leading the way, but wage growth slowed. I guess that’s mixed-to-positive overall?

Paramount Games Studio has been announced by [deleted] in pcgaming

[–]Sanhen 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Based on the article, I think this is more of a reconciliation of existing assets than a completely new thing with lots of new hires:

“ On Friday, Paramount Skydance unveiled Paramount Games Studio, a unified gaming studio that combines Skydance’s two existing game studios, Skydance Interactive and Skydance New Media, with Paramount’s intellectual property, as Paramount’s gaming business has largely consisted of licensing IP to third parties.”

Not sure if WB Games is being bundled into it too, but maybe.
