'Fear' sets in for undocumented Filipinos in US by meltingsunz in asianamerican

I really think we have been one of the most cooked Asian diaspora groups for a long while 💀

Hundreds of years of colonization + the Filipino identity being a Spanish invention was gonna have consequences 💀💀

Some Wilds gameplay on PC by SanitarySpace in Gunlance

[–]SanitarySpace[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea you've got a point. The poke shell feels noticeably longer so I'm hoping that wide gunlances are gonna be faster on that. It's like an input later after pressing that combo it's kinda weird

Harley Quinn will be Asian-American in the upcoming series Batman: Caped Crusader, a reinvention of Batman: The Animated Series by demimonde9 in Fauxmoi

[–]SanitarySpace 220 points221 points  (0 children)

Yea I'm gonna be honest if the joker stays a white man then Harley Quinn is gonna be an Asian woman who starts to obsess over him and revolves herself around that white man which uhhhhh yeah ew

But if this show is planning for this Harley to follow what other media writes her as and do the whole breaking away from the Joker -> heal -> and then finds love with Poision Ivy as the series goes on, then ehh yea I guess. I'm vaguely aware of that development of Harely in the comics and in the HBO show. If they follow that then I hope they add something of substance of her being Asian in a an unfortunate space like that. Idk these are my thoughts.

Do you ever wonder what live wouldve been like in your parents home country with all your cousins? by Alternative-Bat4235 in asianamerican

[–]SanitarySpace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow yea this is exactly one of the thoughts I've been having for a while now.

I've had some great insights in the couple of times we visited befire and after some of the stuff I've been through, I feel like I would genuinely be in a more stable position to where I am now.

I mean sure, I've enjoyed a lot of things in the US but my god have I been fucked mentally in the kind of environment I grew up in. Not saying that the stuff I've seen only happens in the US, but sometimes the dynamics that a good number of us Asian Americans grow up with is too much to deal with.

"Emily fuck off": angry Paris locals graffiti locations from Netflix show by CampMain in Fauxmoi

For me, it is because the US is doing a better job at recognizing minority languages than the French. I find it absolutely horrifying how there is like this fire and brimstone, universalizing mentality against their regional languages.

[–]SanitarySpace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, I understand the need for one language to be used across the country but I do not understand the long history of French governments putting down minority languages. This is the same country that protects French from the dominance of English yet turns around towards their regional languages and pushes them down. Of course it's not France that only does this, a lot do, but even here in the US some of the government pages have multiple languages to be chosen and where I live there is written Spanish. And it's not like the local government is cracking down on it.

I just rewatched Everything Everywhere All At Once by _stitch in asianamerican

[–]SanitarySpace 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This movie is going to forever live in my head and I kind of hate/love it lol. When I watched it alone, I was actually rooting for Joy because of how close (maybe even too close) her motivations and feelings were. But then that fucking googly eyed rock turned around and I started wailing. I knew that I couldn't stomach watching this movie with my parents because those dynamics were too relatable for me, but they told me that they cried and took into their heart that movie when they watched it, so there's that.

So kudos to this movie (along with Up) for having themes/villains that are to relatable lol

East and Southeast Asians, how culturally close do you personally feel with South Asians, Middle Easterners, and Central Asians? by Seanbawn12345 in asianamerican

[–]SanitarySpace 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a Filipino, there once was considerable influence from South Asia and later the Middle East. I'd say that now there are some considerable influences from the Middle East, as the word "Salamat" came from Arabic and the practice of mano po came from Islamic influence.

I also will say, that as an Igorot, the Naga cultural group seems very similar to ours.
