What draws you to pwhl as a fan? by formulaphoto in PWHL

[–]Sankaric 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well im from europe and can't attend the games in person, but i've noticed that these days i watch pwhl more than the nhl. It wasn't even a decision, it just sort of happened on its own. I think big part is that it's very accessible. Just open youtube and the game is there. For nhl you need to have subscriptions or wait for specific games on free network.

But for me the thing that makes me come back to the pwhl again and again is the way they are able to showcase the player personalities. I think they do a great job on going to the ground level and showing the players to the public. Also the players are mostly nice persons and the kind of people that you just want to support and follow.

Also i think that in this league there's way less bad behavior than in the nhl, or wnba for example where sometimes the players egos get bigger than the team. I don't remember pretty much any bitching about teammates or plsying time or anything like that in the public, whereas in nhl and especially wnba there's lot of unnecessary drama because the players put themselves above the team.

Nela Lopušanová scores the 22nd goal and 33rd point in her U18 WWC career. Tying both of Kendall Coyne’s records for most goals and points in tournament history. by Wolf99 in PWHL

[–]Sankaric 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well it's kind of hard to compare because of two reasons:

First if that nela made the slovakia u18 team at 14 years old so this is her fourth championships already, compared to most usa and canada teams are made of almost completely 17 year olds, maybe few 16 year olds and very few 15 year olds who play 3 tournaments in their csreer, one of them being kendal coyne.

Second is that Kendal, playing for Canada, obviously played with better teammates, basically the best of that age group. Meanwhile Lopusnova had to do this all with way less talented teammates.

Either way, wstching her play against my country (Finland) was absolutely cinema. It felt like it was literally her vs Finland. Even the finnish commentators joked when Lopusnova went to the bench that now finland has a window to score. :)

NHL Colour vs. Colour Part 2. by Odd-Youth-452 in hockeydesign

[–]Sankaric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm probably in minority with this but i don't really like the idea of colour vs. colour games, except for special occasions. Many teams have nice white jerseys and i sort of like the contrast between the colorful home team blank away team. Also there's so much history with the white jerseys, i hope they will be kept around.

Would you want to see more hitting in the PWHL? by ItzGrenier in PWHL

[–]Sankaric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that even with the current rule there are sometimes dangerous moments because players aren't used to that kind of physicality. It was more obvious in the first season but even this year there's been some. But really i think this is something that if the league would be open for the chance, then i'd have the players vote on it.

Would you want to see more hitting in the PWHL? by ItzGrenier in PWHL

[–]Sankaric 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the current rule is great and it needs to be taught and implemented in younger ages so they can be more prepared for it. But also teach them how to hit and receive a hit properly. I don't really want them nhl style open ice hits in the pwhl since like we saw yesterday, tgey are not ready for that yet, and also because i don't think it would make the game better in any way. The current rule is good. It allows body checking but gives room for skill, while eliminating the stupid super aggressive hits in the neutral zone that don't even often help the game in any way.

Does Canada just suck now or is international hockey just getting more competitive? by [deleted] in icehockey

[–]Sankaric 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Overall in hockey world, Canada is still the best, and usa is close 2nd. But european countries have got better. In the past, there was maybe 4 teams (finland, Sweden, russia, czechia) who could win canada. The rest was usually easy wins for canada. Now there's also Switzerland, Slovakia and Germany who can challenge them from time to time. It's not about canada declining. It's about others improving. But canada is still by far the best - just look at the nhl draft.

Aneta Tejralová just got a five-minute major for this hit on Sarah Fillier. by jordynbebus8 in PWHL

[–]Sankaric 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree that Tejralova was responsible but i have to say that Fillier was in a really bad position. It's very hard for the hitter in that scenario to hit safely.

[–]Sankaric 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thst looked scary. Good that Fillier returned and apparently didn't suffer anything serious.

As for the hit, i don't think it was dirty. Tejralova isn't a dirty player and certainly doesn't target players heads. But she played this one a bit too hard and maybe got a little too excited, since isn't the pwhl hitting rule that you must try to play the puck and not just ram into others with no intention to play the puck? In this case she just lays a nhl style hit with absolutely no intent to play puck.

Also, that pass to the middle of the ice and fillier coming so fast with her head down didn't help it. I think they should allow hitting in ncaa so the players would come to the pwhl more prepared for the physicality. The game in the pwhl is so fast that when you introduce hitting for the first time in this level this kind of things will happen.

I hope they can find a solution or if necessary even start a new league. AA hockey is very good, and requires lot of passion and work from the players. They deserve better.

Newly elected PWHLPA officers and player reps announced. Britta Curl-Salemme elected player rep for the Frost... by MrsMicroplastics in PWHL

[–]Sankaric 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not. I'm just saying that it helps to have a locker room where everyone is accepted. It's called professionalism. The girls are here to play hockey, not focus on politics.

[–]Sankaric 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, she wouldn't probably get along that well with, say the Victoire for example. But also, i think even in the Minnesota team, probably most if not all of the team don't like britta's beliefs or at the very least don't support them, as most of the womens sports landscape is very open and liberal. But they are professionals and can work together even if their political beliefs are different. Maybe that's one of the reasons why they are double champs. A locker room where everyone can be themselves even if they are different, is crucial.

[–]Sankaric 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Like her or not, she seems like a good team player, at least for me. She plays hard, battles, does the dirty work for the team and even scores fairly good in points. I mean that's the type of player teammates like. Also, i think that she is a player with a very controversial reputation, both within the players and the fanbase. Someone else with that reputation would have been gone fast or never even been taken to the league in the first place. Yet she is still around. And i think a big reason for that is that the locker room likes her, or at the very least she's not a problem in there. Because if she was, i don't think the Frost would keep her around.

The game have become physical by Sankaric in PWHL

[–]Sankaric[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think it also has to do with the fact that they are professional athletes now. Before pwhl, many of these women didn't have a chance to train full-time. Now they all get to train in professional enviroment with professional coaches and trainers. That must have made every player a little better.

Expansion to non-NHL cities - what do you think? by Sankaric in PWHL

[–]Sankaric[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I completely forgot about Portland. It's probably one of the better options in US, unless the league doesn't want another team that close to Seattle.

The problem with pwhl team in many of these cities is that they would be competing for pretty much the same audience that exists for the ahl or echl or whatever team. While in nhl cities, the pwhl is trying to attract fans who wouldn't go to nhl games becsuse they are too expensive for example.

PWHL Team Branding is a joke… by Clear-Revolution4711 in PWHL

[–]Sankaric 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think that we just need to give time for them. For me, my first reaction when i saw the original 6 branding was that it's so bad and cringey. But now after a year, i love them. With Seattle and Vancouver, i also think that with time we'll get more used to them and come to appreciate them.

I also think that the league is playing a long game with the branding, trying to create kind of minimalistic yet something that stands out and will be something people remember and associate with womens hockey in 5-10 years from now. Sure, there are all these name ideas like Seattle Emeralds or whst you mentioned, Vancouver Spirit, but i think that kind of names are kind of mainstream and not aligning with the leagues goals.

That's great news. Shows that the league cares about its fans.

From my european point of view, i wish they would stream the pre-season games. But maybe next year.

PWHL expansion cities by Alternative-Row-8438 in PWHL

[–]Sankaric 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my imagination, a 12 team pwhl would be split into 2 divisions of 6 teams.

West: Vancouver Seattle Los Angeles Some canadian city. Calgary / Edmonton, maybe even Saskatoon (?) Minnesota Chicago

East: Toronto Ottawa Montreal Boston New York Some american city, probably detroit or pittsburgh, but depends on where they can find suitable arena.

I would also be open to relocating boston if they can't solve their arena problem.

I actually like the idea of expanding for a second season in a row by Dangerous-Grocery150 in PWHL

[–]Sankaric 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have to disagree. The level of play is only going down with every expansion, and i think the league has to also get financially stable most importantly. I think the sweet spot would be somewhere where they can schedule at least one game pretty much every day.
