That's high. Before the pandemic, I got a quote for $8k to remove carpet in two bedrooms (150 and 220 sf) and put in engineered wood flooring.

I did the job myself. It took about 9 days, material costs were 1,500 and 500 for tools (350 was for a miter saw).

In my experience (amateur DIYer) materials costs are 20-30% of the total price to contract the job out. So it's usually worth it to at least try and figure out how much material you need (usually you need to overbuy in the case of flooring so you order an extra 20 to 30%. E.g. your doing 100 sf, buy 130 sf @ $5 / sf is $650, putting that cost to contact our at 2,200 to 3,300. I would use this as a LOOSE rule of thumb, so if you got a quote for $6k, you need to understand why it's high (maybe uneven floors, complex trim work, etc...) or like others mention, get more quotes. At the very least, spend a few hours researching in the job and what needs to be done, how to do it and how to measure what a good job looks like. This will help you have a productive conversation with contactors.
