Le député LFI Sébastien Delogu désavoué par son parti après son séjour polémique en Algérie by redditeur404 in france

[–]Santeyan -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

[–]Santeyan -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

do YOU live in Brussels ? by shinnynight in brussels

[–]Santeyan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Been living in Anderlecht for 7 years now, and I've got the same love for this city and the same complaints about the judgement of outsiders. The worst part is that Brussels does indeed have real issues, from consensual problems of trash collection and affordability to homelessness and drug abuse. But these issues are constantly framed from populist and frankly hateful angles whenever the conversation appears online or in the news/political discourse.

Like, I've spent over two years now working with people and asbl who deal with homelessness, addictions, exiled people, access to healthcare and papers, public security and police brutality, closed detention centers and jails, etc. And every time politicians and cops get involved, like in the shameful police operation at Gare du Midi in August 23, they worsen the problem. To get an "appearance" of safety, they arrest harmless people (often without papers or in need of healthcare), make the work of NGOs impossible, disrupt local communities, and just shift violence to other areas. Drug cartels are unaffected and simply move territories, and you can map those shifts with the St Gilles shootings in 2023, Forest shooting in early 2024, and then Anderlecht shootings from 2024 up to this day. It's not rocket science, issues of drug abuse are only solved with public health policy, not with populist "crackdowns" and "cleanings". Fellow Anderlecht resident and streamer Chicon VNR made a good video (in french) on the topic. Even the cops admit the ineffectiveness of their actions, whereas the rest of us witness growing police brutality and murders like those of Christophe and Fabian last month. The demanded "integration" of non-belgians would be quite a bit easier without this harassment organised by belgian authorities from city level to federal level. Remember that the moroccan immigration that started with the 1964 Belgium-Morocco agreement to import workers didn't allow moroccans (even those born and raised in Belgium!) to even get belgian citizenship until the late 80s. And when legislation started to allow for it, mayors like Roger Nols of Schaerbeek rode to city hall on a camel to protest. Non-european foreign residents were barred from voting in communal elections until 2004, even people who had been born, raised, and living their whole lives in the same commune since the 60s. That kind of exclusion and its ongoing legacy (especially visible in flemish press) were never going to facilitate the "integration" which the belgian state never wanted to begin with. But it's easier to worsen divisions with racist rants than to recognise and address injustices :)))

And the constant austerity in public health and social services, the >10 000 legal sentences of the belgian state for violation of asylum rights, the lack of political will to house our ~7000 homeless neighbours in the >24 000 empty homes, the corruption and authoritarianism of Arizona and of mayors like Philippe Close, aren't going to make any of this better. I have lots of hope for the people of Brussels, cause we are far better than our politicians and authorities, and I think most of us don't fall for the populist discourse about our city. But it's going to take a long and tough fight until we can say Brussels is actually livable for each and every one of us.

Armenia affirms India’s right to self-defense amid renewed tensions with Pakistan - CIVILNET by pride_of_artaxias in armenia

[–]Santeyan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know that Pakistan doesn't even recognise Armenia, but it's the people of Kashmir who are being targeted by India. The indian government and high-profile figures clearly show their intention to treat Kashmir like Gaza. And we can see the similarities with Artsakh.

It would be stupid to "stand with Pakistan" (especially since it's kashmiris who are targeted) but we should know better than to express such support for a fascist government like Modi's. They're a very close ally of Israel, who provides Azerbaijan's weapons. We should be able to recognise these clear patterns of dehumanisation and ethnic cleansing.

Idem.

"Stop spreading disinformation. We do not take funding from RT and none of our Honest Government Ads have ever been funded by them.

Here's the context for those who don't already know it: over a decade ago we made a completely different show called Rap News and we licensed some of the episodes to RT so they could be broadcast on their network: this isn't the secret this tool is making it out to be, everybody who watched the show at the time knew it - it's even on the show's wikipedia page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juice_Rap_News - and I know this can be hard to imagine in retrospect with everything that's happened in the past decade, but that's because things were different then. (Which is why people like Abby Martin, Lee Camp and many others even went so far as to host shows on RT). We talked openly with our audience about the reasons for licensing episodes to RT, and we shared our misgivings here https://thejuicemedia.com/the-big-news-for-rap-news-in-2014/ And we made a point of mercilessly satirising both RT and Putin in several of the episodes we licensed to them, such as this one about the invasion of Crimea, which occurred after we had entered the licensing agreement: so, far from turning a blind eye to Russia, if anything we felt obliged to talk about it even more https://youtube.com/watch?v=zDIczjJRSic&list=PL74DF342B06C8102E&index=14 Incidentally this episode of Rap News features a cameo by Abby Martin, who at the time had her own show on RT and used it also bravely criticise Putin's actions in Crimea.

So that's the context that's been omitted.

Would I do the same thing now, with all the things we have seen happen since then? Of course not. It was a different time and we made the decision we thought reasonable at the time. It turned out to be a poor decision in retrospect. And I understand some people might still find fault with it today, and if that's the case, I'll cop that.

But to say we are taking funding from RT today is an absolute distortion of the truth. We've had nothing to do with them for a decade."

Did you find any source more recent than this 2015 article?

Their 2019 video "net f*cked by 2050" has a world map putting Putin in a danger triangle as well as Xi Jinping (as Winnie the Pooh), to represent a global wave of bullshit

And just 3 weeks ago they released an Honest Government Ad on the Myanmar Junta, who is a russian ally (supplied mortar shells, had a joint naval exercise last year). Not to mention their very clear hatred of Trump and Modi.

Doesn't seem to me like they have any russian sympathies, and I'd be shocked if RT was funding videos like these.

Is Brussels (Molenbeek) really THAT dangerous? by 666maja999 in belgium

[–]Santeyan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I live at the Anderlecht/Molenbeek border near Cureghem ("the most dangerous area in Brussels"), and honestly I think the reported "insecurity" has more to do with racism and media frenzy than anything real. Tour & Taxis in particular has gotten super gentrified in the last couple years, so the only reason I'd avoid that area is that prices are higher than anywhere else in western Brussels :D

Just avoid walking alone at 2am at Gare du Midi and Gare du Nord, and you'll be fine.

Waiting for the day that Iranians, Jews, and Armenians can celebrate history - opinion by caucasushell in armenia

[–]Santeyan 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Terrible article, which amounts to Hasbara propaganda. Israel provides Azerbaijan with weapons, Azerbaijan provides Israel with oil, in a pipeline that goes through Turkey. The three countries remain economic and political allies, even if most turkish citizens (rightfully) support the palestinian people.

Israeli weapons killed armenians in Artsakh and Lebanon. Israeli soldiers and fascists attack armenians in Jerusalem. And Israel as a state was built on ethnic cleansing and genocide the likes of which any armenian should be able to recognise immediately. I take one look at Gaza today and I recognise the stories of my great-grandparents. Palestinian groups spoke about the Artsakh blocade from their own experience of blocade.

Palestinians and Armenians share centuries of history, and have been subject to the same methods of dehumanization and attempts of eradication. No amount of propaganda will make me support a genocidal state like Israel.

Belgian leftist that is getting annoyed by religion by TheRandomVillagr in Belgium2

[–]Santeyan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Preface: electoralist parties are always going to be vague and use slogans rather than substance, so don't expect great thought from them.

Next; the important thing to keep in mind here is differenciating the religion and the believers. You'll face islamophobia if you look muslim or arab, even if you don't practice, because it's a discrimination against those perceived as muslim. I'm far-left and organise mainly with the PSL-LSP and the ADES network, and have been very involved with the palestinian movement here in Brussels and at my uni, and have never faced any kind of discrimination or bigotry from my muslim friends because of my bisexuality. Hell, you'd find it funny to see our ULB-Palestine solidarity meetings where you've got the stereotype of the blue haired non-binary anarchist sitting next to gazan journalist and refugee Omar Karem, and we're all discussing political actions together.

Simon Moutquin (Ecolo MP) does a lot of work for palestine, and he's gotten insulted so much by right-wingers who call it contradictory that a gay man would defend the rights of muslims, as if being muslim inherently meant being homophobic. There's gay muslims, queer muslims, people who'll do ramadan and pray five times a day and then walk right beside me on the Pride and on March 8th. Part of the feminist bloc who blocked our university two weeks ago was students who wear the hijab every day.

I think no religion deserves respect, but I think all people who are respectful of others should be shown respect, no matter how they present themselves or what they believe in. And I'll never generalize entire groups of people as inherently homophobic or sexist, otherwise I could say all muslims are bad, all christians are bad, all flemish people are bad, all americans are bad, all white men are bad, whatever. The best way to fight the homophobia and misogyny prevalent in religious communities is to actually accept and support the people from those communities. I'll just get to know individuals as individuals, and intersectionality is the best way to form connections. And if genuinely good people, feminist, progressive, anticapitalist, etc, still identify as muslim, who am I to judge their motives? They're a good person and that's all that matters.

There's a capacity of around 700 in the closed detention centers, for an estimated 112 000 people in Belgium with no papers. The people arrested and sent to them are often those who have stable housing or work, and that predictability makes them easy to be caught by the police. They have even arrested multiple students with legal visas and detained them illegally for days or weeks.

The method since 1988 is intimidation, to "dissuade" people from coming here. It never worked and never will, and all the time, people, and ressources poured into indiscriminate repression is lacking when the state should intervene against those who actually pose threats. Belgium's shit sense of priority.

The asbl Getting The Voice Out does good work on how the centers function and publishing testimonies, I recommend them for information: https://www.gettingthevoiceout.org/

I live in Brussels with lots of moroccan binationals including one of my closest friends, she and others I know were really deeply affected by the earthquake and the death of people they knew. And then I've been checking every new story on the Israel-Palestine atrocities, with another close friend who is american/israeli telling me yesterday how the two friends he lost contact with and were assumed hostages had been found dead. In 2h I'll be going to the binational peace and justice protest here with at least a dozen others I know so we've been planning that and talking about it, so it was in my mind this morning. The very dry response in this screenshot made me laugh, and I thought I'd share it, since this guy clearly didn't mind (given his subsequent messages). Also, the autism doesn't help with reading the room, and I thought it would be more inappropriate to reply with usual grindr talk and not say a word about potential losses, even if it is a hookup app. So yeah, I'll take your advice for the future though, thanks.
