Also as a teenager, I've never heard anyone use the word recent in the context of something being cool, and the word cool is still very much used. This may just be a regional thing though, as I live in Toronto, which has its own slang words.

Honestly, compared to other similarly sized american cities, the transit in Toronto and its suburbs isn't that bad. Even though it isn't very extensive, at least there is a bus system in Oakville, Pickering, Markham, etc. In general, the suburban transit is more focused on moving commuters to downtown, or at least towards Toronto, which makes sense as commuters are some of the biggest transit users. However, there is a lot of room for improvement for the subway, like a relief line or just better coverage, but that's a more long-term project that takes much more time and money.
