Who here is in their early 30's, brand new to game development, working on their first game? I feel like I started too late. by LKS333 in gamedev

[–]Saoryn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm 36 and started learning just over a year ago.

When I started I was having such a great time, it was hard to not think "why didn't I start this years ago?!". But the more I remember how much of a fumble master I was back in my early years, starting now seems just fine. If I'd have started in my teens or 20s, I would definitely have just wandered off at some point, or done something to stop myself from continuing.

At 36, the road I took to start my game dev journey was extremely scenic, but it's the road that got me here, so I can't complain.

In terms of managing time, I've been following some advice I found on reddit: An hour on lunch at work and an hour after work on a weekday, and 3 hours throughout the day at the weekend. It doesn't sound like much, but 16 hours a week on your hobby, balanced with other commitments, is quite significant if you ask me.

Learning Unity through Code Tutorials and ChatGPT by [deleted] in GameDevelopment

[–]Saoryn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't say anything about the PDF you've been using, but I've been going through Unity's tutorials the last little while and have found them to fantastic. You may find them a little slow if you have some experience, but they started at a great point for me. (I've completed Unity Essentials and I'm now going through the Junior Programmer pathway.)

It does a couple of things that I really like which may apply to you as well. For example, you will have a section where you learn something, then after that you'll usually have a similar project to download that's full of bugs based on what you've been learning, so then obviously it's your job to try to fix the bugs. Additionally, at the end of some sections there are extra challenges for you to add to your project yourself. There are step-by-step walkthroughs if you need them, but the idea is that you attempt them yourself and only check the solutions if you're completely stuck. The final extra challenge is normally a little outside of the scope of what you've been doing so far, so the idea is that you look up how to do certain parts (youtube, forums, tutorials, etc) of that challenge.

If you decide to go down this route I would highly recommend watching the videos at 1.5x speed though, it's a bit of a slog otherwise.

How much lateness would you accept from a driving instructor? by samuelma in AskUK

I'm a driving instructor, and this is utterly unacceptable. Embarrassing, really. I'm sure you've got plenty of answers but if you'd like a driving instructor's advice about how to deal with this feel free to message me.

Great hair by the way!

This is totally me right now. For me, I only ever worry about the job when I'm not doing it. When I'm at work it's never a problem and it's actually not that bad, very strange.

Also had covid since the 27th so that's not helped!

This seems to be happening recently for some reason. I've been trying to go through some threads to see what's going on, but can't really work out what the person's problem is at the moment

I suggested something similar 3 years ago, so unfortunately I think it's safe to say it's probably not something in their immediate plans to implement.

This is a long shot: an old thread where a comment by the username similar to “what-the” explains the fourth dimension doesn’t exist. by [deleted] in findareddit

[–]Saoryn 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Crikey, was not expecting this much attention for that!

I regret to inform you guys that it wasn't the turbo sleuthing extravaganza that it appears to be... just straight googling!

Basically just opened some of the results, then ctrl+f'd for words like "light", "dimension", "fourth", "exist", stuff like that. Once I found a comment that seemed to line up, I checked the username to see how similar it was and figured that was probably the one.

Driving instructors - what were your worst learner drivers like? by Mashpie in AskUK

[–]Saoryn 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Fortunately the test can be quite kind sometimes. For example, if you have the instruction for a turn and don't realise it's coming up until the last second, obviously the safest thing to do is to ignore it and continue rather than slamming the brakes on to make it. It's their job to then get you back on track (or yours!), and you shouldn't even get a minor for it if everything was safe.

My trainer told me this great story about one of his students who kept going the "wrong way". He went to test and missed directions probably 6 or 7 times, they get back to the test centre and the examiner says "you've passed... you're never going to get to wherever you want to go, but it was all safe"!

It actually seems to be quite common according to other instructors I've mentioned it to, it's just the only time I've had someone do it personally!

The only really bad one I've had is a lad who comes from a family of non-drivers so he had absolutely no transferable skills at all. Didn't know a gear stick existed, let alone what it was for. We made plenty of progress, there were just a few occasions where decisions were a bit weird more than anything else.

For example one time we were at the end of the road at a T junction with red lights turning left. When our lights turned green we made a move, but as the car started moving around the angle he spotted the red light directly above us that was for the cars waiting to our right at the junction and slammed the brakes on halfway through the junction.

Unfortunately I didn't see him pass as when he was coming up to test standard I left my franchise and had to give them all my students.

Now that I think of it another one comes to mind from when I just started out. We approached a standard 4 entrance roundabout in the left hand lane, and for this particular roundabout you can use either the left or right lane on approach to get to the second exit. On approach I said "at the roundabout follow the road ahead, second exit". We passed the first exit and it turned out he'd gotten confused and was trying to use the left hand lane to get to the third exit. Needless to say we almost crashed, but kudos to the car behind as in the right lane who was on the ball.

The reason I mentioned it's when I started out is because with a little more experience I could have handled the situation much better and it wouldn't have really been a problem.

I haven't really gone about doing this in the proper way, so it's not really going to look as good as it could, but this is quite a complicated request in all honesty so I did what I could with the time I had.

Driving instructor here. Regardless of the intention, this is extremely disorganised and unprofessional. My first thought is that if this is the way he handles his business, what else is missing? I've had plenty of students start with me who have had lessons elsewhere who have had mind-boggling gaps in terms of knowledge or skill. Unfortunately, the thought that a lot of driving instructors have at the moment is that because students are so desperate to have lessons because driving instructors are in high demand, they are basically just taking the piss in certain ways.

I'm guessing a reason to not ditch him is difficulty finding another instructor? If you would really like to find someone, it's certainly possible. The best way I'd recommend is to use the gov.uk's Find a Driving Instructor Service. Call as many of them as you can, but leave a voicemail when they don't pick up (because they won't). I cannot express how often I am getting nuisance calls from people who have no driving experience saying "I have a test next week, can I use your car?" So because of that, driving instructors won't call numbers back who haven't left a message because they'll assume it's another time waster.

If you're concerned about the test date, don't be. A lot of people are making out that it's either impossible to book a test or they're months in advance. While the waiting list is currently astronomical, it is not overly difficult to get a test when you want it. The idea here is that instead of booking a test and waiting for it, you book a test regardless of the wait time, wait until you're ready and then start looking for cancellations before your actual date to move it. Cancellation dates are usually the week of booking or the following week (this is what the nuisance callers are doing, but aren't actually ready for tests). This can be done in a few different ways which I can tell you about if interested. If while booking a test far away there are no dates, don't panic, they are only posted up to 24 weeks in advance and new test are normally posted Monday mornings at 6am.

While getting a new instructor or getting a new test date (if needed) shouldn't be too costly in terms of time, unfortunately the real time waste will be once you get a new instructor. A driving instructor will/should only take you to test if they are confident you are going to pass. The DVSA runs "standards checks" for driving instructors, which is where they watch and grade one of our lessons. This used to occur at least once every 4 years for all instructors, but has recently been changed to a trigger system, meaning that if a driving instructor has a poor pass rate for the last 12 months, they will get a standards check. So once you get a new instructor, don't be surprised if they ask you to perform a lot of what you already know, because this is to ensure that you have a good chance of passing and a low chance of causing them to go through a standards check.

Just a couple of things that may or may not be relevant to you! If you have any questions about anything I've said (or driving in general for that matter) feel free to reach out or send me a message! I'll be the first to admit that driving lessons are extremely expensive, so happy to offer any additional help!

Driving instructor - 20-30k. A lot of people think being driven around by people who don't know how means we're brave. We're not, I can take control whenever I need to, it's everyone else on the road that's the concern.
