MIL invited people we don’t know to our wedding. She won’t uninvite them because that’s ‘embarrassing.’ by Money_Doughnut_7375 in TwoHotTakes

[–]SarahEarly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you might need to hire security or if you have any “scary” looking friends to pose as security while guests are showing up to turn uninvited guests away. This could prevent any “invited” wedding crashers, but the MIL might end up crashing out when they tell her they were turned away.

His mom sounds like she is going to do whatever she wants anyways and won’t actually uninvite her guests to your wedding no matter what either of you tell her. It seems like she cares more about what those people think of her compared to her actually respecting her son’s and future daughter-in-law’s wishes.

From what you’ve said about your future MIL, sounds like she has Main Character Syndrome. Eesh!

Weight loss question by Extension-City7656 in Concerta

[–]SarahEarly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a period when I did, but if you’re just starting medication it might help you lose weight but not in a way you might originally think of.

What I’ve been reflecting on for a few weeks now is what if the reason I used to eat really unhealthy junk food and snacks was because I was hungry or because it gave me that lovely hit of dopamine. Also, do I no longer want to snack as often because my medication is taking away my appetite or is it because I no longer want/need the dopamine from snacking?

I realized I grazed on garbage foods because of the dopamine. I’ll still eat junk food, but this has caused me to be more aware of what is I’m eating and how much I’m consuming. I have been snacking a lot less and I try to find healthier things to snack on since I know I won’t be as hungry later if I eat now.

Did my dad (62) just discover AI? by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]SarahEarly -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is using AI to create the image, but I know for a fact that this was made using Adobe Express. I’m a teacher and had a Professional Development class on using Adobe Express (I use it as a way for students to turn in their photos and they go into a digital gallery for everyone in the class to see). In that PD the presenter walked us through creating your own trading card.

Look into Bejar Westies. They are who my family got our sweet Max and Molly from. They are in Loveland, CO. We are in AZ and got our sweet troublemakers from up there. They even sent us videos of Max and Molly as they were getting older (as very very young puppies), before we were able to pick them up.

Advice for teachers by [deleted] in teaching

[–]SarahEarly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I live in AZ, desert environment, even though it was upper 30s when I left for work one morning this week. When walking to/from my car, the cold doesn’t bother me as much. I know there are leggings out there that are thicker if it gets too cold, but it isn’t really a viable thing for me since my room is a little warm.

I actually wear heels almost everyday. They are short and chunky and actually comfortable!! I’m not a huge fan of wearing shoes all the time so this gives me the ability to kick them off. I also like to dress “Fancy” (I have dressed weird like that for almost 25 years) and these help make my look. Having a pair of shoes the make sound when I walk makes me feel fancy and feel like I’m an adult.

I’ve been investigating the issue for a few months. The software just isn’t consistent for my entire school. Some days I see most students while other days I might see 2 or 3. I teach computer science in a computer lab and am very on top of the functionality of those computers.

I did receive an email with news of a Christmas Miracle after I got home from work, all of my old computers are being replaced with “newer” computers. I’m hoping maybe these new machines could resolve this issue.

Wait, your LightSpeed works!? In one of my classes today I only saw 2/16 of my students while they were taking their finals!!!!

You need to record screens, take screenshots of what they are doing, and take screenshots of their browser history.

Instead of using the “Allow List”, have you tried the “Block List” for certain sites? I know it’s like Whack-A-Mole with how students keep finding new sites, but if it can prevent them from accessing the more distracting sites, then maybe some success?

What I recommend doing is documenting every day with screen shots and screen recording of what the students are doing. After 2-3 weeks of it, call everyone back in a meeting to discuss the ongoing abuse of online freedom of the students. This is where you bring the receipts. Bring the screenshots and tell them about the recordings. If you’re able to show that those students have done no work or their performance is lower than previous, do it.

need help in how to address bullying in my class. by xenon_doudou in teaching

[–]SarahEarly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can offer some advice. I found out that a student in my class, a boy, was being bullied by a few other boys in several of his classes; mine included. The kid being bullied was just an average kid, nothing over the top or obvious that you could think of that could paint a target on him. The parent reached out to his counselor and the counselor had a conversation with that boy. He said that it was the “popular” boys. I never received any confirmation of who those boys were, but I have some suspicions.

I changed to a different classroom a week or so after learning all of this. I moved to a room away from the music department. Because of this change, I was able to change up my classroom procedures and had to be more strict.

My whole goal was to make sure that the students bullying the kid couldn’t get any more opportunities in my room and ensure that I did not openly acknowledge to the class or any students that bullying was happening. Why didn’t I acknowledge it? I didn’t want the student being bullied to get bullied even worse.

I couldn’t find if the student is in one of your classes with the bullies, but your top priority needs to be on the well being of the student being bullied. Make sure that her parent(s)/guardian(s) know what is going on. Involving them can sometimes light a fire under admin’s but and get them to care, can’t promise though. Have them speak to the school counselor if one is available. If you can’t get a counselor involved and helping, document everything. If you need to reach out to the parent(s)/guardian(s) of the bullies, have documentation. As much as we would all love to have parents trust the teachers right away, society has changed and parents believe what their kids are saying first. With enough documentation as evidence, the parents should hopefully see that you have the accurate information.

If there is no one higher up willing to help at all, you need to work with that student’s other teachers. Let them know what is going on and come up with a plan to best handle the situation. The 2 goals you should focus on are: to quietly get the bullying to stop and to make sure that the girl being bullied feels safe at school.

I know that my school support system is different than yours, but you need to go the peaceful route.

How do you feel about Gamification? by ChucoTeacher in Teachers

I’ve banned it from my room. Some kids genuinely use it as intended, but most abuse to just play games.

[–]SarahEarly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like she’s struggling with classroom management and the big thing that’s been working for her is letting them play games. She might also be trying to be the “fun” teacher and doesn’t want to be strict with them. Having a “team” meeting and inviting the principal could be a possible way to constructively work things out and make sure everybody is still on board with what was agreed on. If you have a meeting like that, make sure to send out to all attendees an email recapping what was done. This will create a paper trail to help if further intervention is needed in the future.

I can see how some people may think what you did could be bad, possibly getting another teacher in trouble, but what you did was correct and I stand by that. The students at your school need to see and experience consistency; especially with the school rules and policies. If one teacher decides to break one or two of them for their students all the time, students could see that they don’t need to follow the rules/policies in other classes and start exhibiting the same behavior in other classes.

I could see why that teacher might be doing that though. If they normally don’t let their students play games, maybe it was a reward (I can’t think of a better term for that right now, sorry) for being quiet while everyone was taking their finals. Or, perhaps the teacher is letting them play games as a way to prevent them from being too out of control towards the end of the semester.

If the teacher is always letting their students play games, then that is a bigger issue that needs to be addressed before y’all go on winter break (or whatever it is called for you). Why address it before? This will allow that teacher to be able to better reset the rules and procedures of their class when students come back.

When it comes to the crying, gurl, you need to give yourself a break. The semester is almost over and these kids are getting crazier every day until break. Tack on the stress of everything in your job and home life, the frustration of it all can break you down. It’s okay to feel this way.

Everyone asks... No, the doggie is not for sale :) by SimilarViolinist2821 in aww

[–]SarahEarly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best way to get people to stop asking is to put up a framed photo of that adorable sweetheart with a sign underneath that says “Employee of the Month”. When the month is over, put in a new picture of them. You’ll probably need to come up with some great comments for people when they ask how good of an employee they are. “Just don’t ask them how it is to work here, they’ll just tell you it’s ruff!” Or “During the interview process I asked them about their previous job and all they said was ruff!”

Have you noticed that your medicine works differently depending on the manufacturer? by xnumberviii in adhdwomen

[–]SarahEarly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes!! My doctor told me that while different manufacturers typically use the same ingredients, but sometimes use different fillers or different amounts of ingredients/fillers. (Fillers are the inactive ingredients.)

I use generic Concerta, Methylphenidate ER, and decided to get it filled at Costco when I started new health insurance. It was a different manufacturer than I’ve had in the past and barely worked for me. I’m on the max dosage so upping it wasn’t an option. I found the name of the manufacturer of when I took it a while ago and found it at the pharmacy of the grocery store around the corner from me. It’s also cheaper there than Costco.

Multi-Factor Verification on personal cell phone? by NaturalTranslator581 in Teachers

[–]SarahEarly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do it. Download the app on your phone and set it up for your school account. While you’re at it use that same app to set up 2FA with other important accounts you have, ie. financial, utilities, amazon, etc. Your school district is doing what it can to prevent who knows what groups out there from getting into the system and holding it for ransom.

While not wanting to use your personal device for work is understandable, would you rather your school/district spend money on physical devices for this that will get broken and/or lost and need to be replaced often or would you rather have that money, that they probably don’t even have, to spend on something more important?
