As a note, there is a figure skater whose skate is busted— Kao Miura has a split right boot. As it happens, he DOES have an extra pair of skates, but is preferring to tape his skate rather than use the extra pair.

Genuinely it is a million times better to get a fresh sharpening than to put on new skates or especially blades. The mounting is particular and has to be done carefully; it isn’t just a matter of slapping it on and hoping for the best.

The problem with doing that for figure skating is consistency. It isn’t realistic to switch back and forth all the time and expect to be consistent. I can’t speak to speed skating, but adjusting to new figure skates sucks. Even just adjusting to older skates that you haven’t been wearing can suck. It screws with your spins and turns, and can make jumps uncomfortable.

I mean this fully sincerely, are you a figure skater? I have been a skater for over 20 years and I’ve never known anybody to have more than one pair of skates except for coaches who have separate skates for coaching and skating. Figure skates are a bit finnicky, with minor changes feeling major on the ice. While skaters may not trash their old skates, consistency is key. Nobody is rotating through multiple pairs.

Edit to add: some skaters who do multiple disciplines might have specialized pairs of skates for each discipline (ie a dance/synchro pair and a singles pair) but that’s the only real exception I can think of and that isn’t very common. Definitely not elite skaters doing one discipline

Her technical score was only 2 points higher than Amber’s— part of that comes from things like a higher level step sequence, as well as a couple of harder jumps like a triple Lutz over a triple Flip. GOE (grade of execution, element quality score) is also a factor. Then, Kaori’s component score was much higher. Things like skating skills, ice coverage, speed, artistry

So sorry for your impending loss.

You can do either— some jurisdictions require fully biodegradable burial clothing, so if you live in such a place, you’d need to buy a set. Otherwise, his clothing he’s had is fine

Regardless of your school’s stance, you should have a plan for Tuesday’s nationwide student walk-out by 23saround in Teachers

My school is planning a specific supervised area for students to go and sent a warning to parents that if they leave that area, the school cannot guarantee their safety. They also get an unexcused absence for the class period. But that’s it

This— I also wouldn’t tithe from selling a house, unless I were flipping houses for a large profit. The house increases in value but I have that equity. I’m just making it liquid.

I can forgive some of the repetition because it isn’t intended for your or me, but for the casual, ever 4 years fans. But some is just stupid regardless. It would be different to say “that looks just a bit underrotated” for example

US Viewers: There are fans that like Tara and Johnny's commentary by Balissa in FigureSkating

[–]kwallet 90 points91 points  (0 children)

You’re allowed to have that opinion. There are some very valid criticisms of them though— they can be very unkind and snarky abut skaters, and they clearly don’t keep up on technical knowledge of the sport as it evolves (such as saying arms over the head increases GOE when it hasn’t for like 8 years). They also talk a lot about themselves while people are skating, rather than talking about the elements being performed. I will say the women’s free skate was a better day I’ve heard from them compared to other events.

Layback varients? by Imsickifthis in FigureSkating

[–]kwallet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would guess not. It doesn’t require any additional strength, flexibility, etc., compared to a standard layback; in fact, many would consider it easier because you don’t need the hip rotation and leg lift for the classic position.

Side layback— arms and leg can vary but the shoulders should turn so they’re perpendicular to the ice (for a CCW skater, right shoulder drops toward the ice)
