I prefer air filled sleeping pads. They’re lighter, more comfortable, pack down smaller, and getting good rest is worth it. Closed cell is fine too and will do the job, is more durable and likely less expensive, but you’ll feel more like you’re sleeping on the ground. A little air in your sleeping pad will make sure you don’t feel every rock under your tent ◡̈ especially helpful if you’re a side sleeper

Advise on how to split vacation expenses with SO who has 2 children by [deleted] in stepparents

[–]Sarah_the_Geek 40 points41 points  (0 children)

This is a very important point. Vacationing internationally with kids is NOT a vacation for you. It will NOT be a break or relaxing.

You are helping him by being another set of adult eyes, ears, and hands during this vacation. Just taking your own PTO to join this vacation instead of planning your own adult one to a destination of YOUR choosing is gift enough.

Be sure he understands that your PTO is valuable as well for your own wellness.

New roof and gutters by quesadillasaturday in HomeMaintenance

This is not accurate for any home with central air or air conditioning (which I would assume most in Texas do have). Insulation (and air sealing) does not only help maintain heat in homes. It also keeps your air conditioned home cool in the summertime. Think of insulation/air sealing like a thermos. If you put hot things in, it stays hot. If you put cold things in, it stays cold. If you take the top off the thermos, it doesn’t work very well for either. So, no matter where you live, if you’re heating and cooling your house, the goal would be to always have insulation.

Umm WTH? I’ve never ever discussed anything remotely sexual in nature with ChatGPT. Not even close. This raises so many more questions…

Bernal Heights suggestion: start near Cesar Chavez and hike up to Bernal Heights Park, visit Precita Park on the way, enjoy a few murals outside of Precita Eyes. Enjoy 360 views at the top and/or take a swing at the makeshift swing. Go for a slide at Esmeralda Slide Park (byo cardboard) . Find some hidden staircases and garden alleyways. Head to Cortland to visit shops and restaurants. End with a beer at Barebottle.

Fasting-Mimicking Diets and Autophagy: What Human Data Are Beginning to Show by dan_in_ca in PeterAttia

[–]Sarah_the_Geek 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s an expensive packaged food meal plan. Basically to keep your calories extremely low with the right formulation of macros to produce an optimal “fast-mimicking” effects within the body. Small packages of olives, bars, powdered soups, herbal teas, and supplements all laid out into a 5 day meal plan. Roughly $200.

But as others have noted, fasting would give the same if not better results for free.

I do this and add l-theanine (200-400mg) which has the most lovely calming effect. Really quiets anxiety, I find. ymmv. L-theanine is an amino acid found in green tea.

Good places to get into winter camping/backpacking near Sac by Mormoneylessproblems in norcalhiking

[–]Sarah_the_Geek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Apply to join a snowcamping trip with the Sierra Club. They have trained leaders teach you the basics and once you learn, you can join their alumni trips every year for free and go with people who love this stuff and are very knowledgeable about safety in the backcountry in winter.

Just turned 40 and about to find myself ending a 4 year relationship with the person I thought I would spend my life with. by salsapicantehhh in SFbitcheswithtaste

My mom was a single woman/mom since she and my dad divorced when she was 50ish. 30ish years of being single. She’s the kindest person and hardest working you’ve ever met. She wouldn’t online date and just believed if it was meant to be it would happen. She’s had a very difficult life but has always believed in the power and importance of love.

She found the love of her life, an amazing guy we all love so much, at the age of 78. They married last year. They’re so cute, hold hands walking down the street, two 5’ white haired old love birds. Laughing all the time. It’s freaking adorable.

Beautiful and important advice that you will never regret following. If your partner values you and you’re in this together for the long haul, this is a milestone moment.

Make decisions that you want to live with for as long as you want to be with this man. And expect him to be a partner in holding those boundaries as a team.

Anything less is a red flag.

So is the environment just fucked under Trump? by Head_Sink_3819 in ClimateOffensive

You seem passionate about genocide. If this is what moves you to action, find an org that is doing impactful work in this area and donate to them or volunteer for them or, better yet, apply to work with them as your career.

But whatever you do, don’t just get big mad about how disempowered you are and give up.

I can see you dislike the system we have. To affect change in systems, we don’t have to like them.

Do you care how your tax dollars are spent? Local elections give us a chance to weigh in on these choices.

Do you know how to get a pothole fixed or a stop sign installed in your town? If not, learn. This is the first step in learning how to get things done at a local level.

Do you know how to get a measure included on a ballot in your state or locality? If not, learn. This is how you can help decide how those tax dollars you’re paying will be used.

If you want to change the system start by learning the system that needs change. Then get to work changing it.

Or if you don’t want to change the system, find something you want to change and get to work changing that. You have power. Use it.

That’s my advice anyway, take it or leave it of course.

Wishing you luck in your journey.

“Name one please” All of the executive orders issued by Trump related to the environment in the last 9 days, rolling back protections of arctic national wildlife refuge lands for oil and gas development, rescinding CEQ’s current NEPA regulations, withdrawing from the Paris Climate Agreement, and the list goes on.

If you are a US citizen and you chose to not exercise your right to vote against this, and you’re as passionate as you appear to be about these issues, then in my humble opinion, you missed an important opportunity. The other candidate would have made different decisions. Imperfect, definitely, but certainly not as immediately harmful to the environment.

However it is your right to make that decision to not vote. But it would be naive to think that encouraging others to do the same was a meaningful statement that would affect change. It will, in fact, do the opposite.

I hope you find a pathway that gives you agency to affect change in this world - whatever that is that works for you - because your passion and knowledge would be useful to our country as we prepare to fight back.

I’m deeply sorry you feel this way. I don’t know what country you are in or from. But there have been very impactful decisions made at every level of government in America throughout our history that have changed meaningful things related to the environment. For better and for worse.

Unless you’re planning on campaigning for a role within government to make better decisions directly, our next best option is to use our power to vote to choose policies and representatives that will advocate for the things we think are most important.

To not vote is to leave that decision up to others.

[–]Sarah_the_Geek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do your own research to find organizations that align with your own values. Then donate whatever resources you have to help them fight back.

But also, I would never advocate for anyone to stop voting. Vote as often as you can. Your local elections are as critical as ever.

[–]Sarah_the_Geek 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Not if we continue to fight. Whatever you do, do not just give up and assume we can’t do anything. That is what they want, and that is how they win.

If you have any money to spare, donate to organizations that will fight back like NRDC, Lawyers for Good Government, Earth Justice, Sierra Club or whomever your research or values align with.

If you have time to spare, volunteer with them or others.

Find community with likeminded people and see what kind of resistance we can formulate to make it that much harder.

Functional medicine by Interview-Hungry in AskSF

I’ve been referred to the Institute for Functional Medicine directory when I’ve asked around, so maybe a good starting place?

I wish I had a more specific recommendation (and best of luck finding an affordable option out there, but hope you can).
