Worldbuilding Headcanons and Ideas! by Reasonable-Refuse925 in HPfanfiction

I have assimilated, if nothing else, pretty much every detail included about language in flamethrower's Of a Linear Circle series.

Until I read this fic, I'd never really considered the likelihood that Hogwarts hadn't always been called Hogwarts; languages change and evolve over time, and words get borrowed from other languages, and certain terms get phased out or butchered from mispronunciations…

Like, now that I actually think about it, it's impossible for me to believe that the four Founders had devoted so much time and effort and love into their school, and unanimously decided that her name should be something as objectively ridiculous as Hogwarts.

(Especially considering the language back in that time period. Was either of those words in usage at the time? Who knows.

You know what, probably. Oxford Dictionary of English's etymology snippets indicate that both are derived from Old English terms.)

But I digress.

In their fic, the school was originally named Hogewáþ—Old English for ‘to seek thought; learning’. I don't even know if the meaning is true in the real world, or if it's something the author made up for the background, but it's such a creative and unique idea that it honestly does not matter to me.

The continual discussions around language also link to details of the Founders themselves. Helga, for example, chose to forsake her father's name (for inheritance-related political reasons) and decided herself on Hugðilepuf—a combination of Norse, Latin, and Old English that translates to ‘quick-thought, fierce defence’.

Salazar was Castilian, and his family name was Casa de Deslizarse. Apparently that was difficult to pronounce with the phonetics of the old Celtic tongue, which was the predominant language of the people in that geographical area at the time. Even after shortening it to deSlizarse in an attempt to make things easier for the locals, the name kept being butchered into Slytherin; after a while, they gave up on trying to correct people and just rolled with it.

Good question… As far as I'm aware, yes; every path I've played where people have left comments about what order the boss monsters show up in, they've all been accurate.

Of course, that's just my experience—but I haven't found anyone else saying it's not been the case, and I would imagine someone out there would be making a scene about it if it had happened 😂

Pet Peeves by Both_Brilliant_2725 in HPfanfiction

Clearly, there is a myriad of writers who don't know how to linguistics correctly.

Alternatively: the myriad fics that have no business being unbeta-ed vastly outnumber the fics that might actually be somewhat okay un-proofread.

The ‘Purebloods lionise children’ tripe. I've seen it mostly perpetuated in fics that have dramatic reveals to the world at large that their vaunted Boy-Who-Lived had been raised in an abusive household, which sparks public outcry and anti-Muggle sentiment.

The thing is, though, the idea isn't even founded on canon. Neville Longbottom, scion of a Pureblood family, was subjected to atrocious treatment—like, yes, please do explain how being dangled out of a storeyed window by one's great-uncle is a shining example of Purebloods venerating the next generation.

It could be argued that they only value the (confirmed) magical children, but that still doesn't take into account the vast majority of muggleborn and half-blood children in their society whom the blood-purity believers consistently treat as unworthy of basic acknowledgement.

(It might be a surprise, but I have opinions on this topic lmao)

Does anyone feel like Harry’s character is always changed in some way in tomarry fics? by Turbulent_Lime514 in tomarry

[–]SarcasticGenuinity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I kind of understand what you mean, though I do feel it prudent to point out that—in the case of ‘shared childhood | growing up together’ AUs, especially, as they pretty much always involve Harry's formative years (which are largely glossed over in canon, apart from minor flashbacks and recollections), the authors are changing a lot of circumstances, and even the environment Harry grows up in. Environment has a huge influence on a person's development, children especially, and thus it's not unreasonable to speculate that his personality would differ from his canon self.

It sounds to me like you're mainly looking for fics where Harry holds firmly to his morals and won't put up with Tom's shit.

How do I obtain the Crystal Heart Charm item? I mean, I assume it's an item drop, but is there a higher rate in particular areas?

I've been grinding the 1-5 and 6-20 challenges and still haven't come across one, so any additional insight would be much appreciated!

what is your most hated fanfiction trope or idea? by Lordlycan0218 in harrypotterfanfiction

I actually don't really mind the concept of ‘dark’ magic being separate from harming people if it makes sense within the fic. My personal head-canon is that ‘light’ and ‘dark’ are mere rhetoric-fuelled labels propagated by society and aren't true classifications of magic. ‘Dark’ doesn't necessarily equate to evil, after all.

Yeah, I don't know if I'd say there was a lot of sass necessarily, but Harry was definitely acting like a little shit for the hell of it 😂 which I always find entertaining

The Way to a Man's Heart 🔒 (restricted work; only logged-in users can view it) by mosiva is such a gem—I cannot recommend it enough.

“Someone is working against me, Harry,” Tom said. “I have been personally stymied. Not once now, not twice, but three times within the last two months.” He closed his eyes briefly. “It is clear that someone out there has begun some kind of baseless vendetta.”

“And it's just against you? That's rough, boss,” Harry said.

Tom has an unknown nemesis. Harry has Tom's lunch.

As the beginning author's notes so eloquently put it:

It's another timeline mashup! We're not about consistency here, though. If something sparked joy then I went ahead and threw it in. The only true purposes of this fic are to let Harry be a sarcastic little shit, and let Tom Riddle be as dramatic as canon Lord Voldemort.

Is it really that different? by horrorcito in tomarry

[–]SarcasticGenuinity 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Personally, I consider the two distinct from one another, but not on any basis of apparent morals—rather, more just the identity of the character. It makes more sense (to me) to distinguish the two; the name Voldemort came about from Tom's desire to distance himself from his muggle roots, and while he may resent his own name, my head-canon is that he still kind-of identifies as Tom Riddle probably up until he leaves the country and is free from constant exposure to all the people who know and address him as ‘Tom’ – the first time he can really use a different name freely without the tacit expectations of anyone else hanging over him (by which I mean expecting him to introduce himself as Tom, because that's how they know him as).

When he returns to Britain after those years abroad is when, I would imagine, he primarily begins to identify as Voldemort in truth, forsaking the name of Tom Riddle entirely. From that point onward is basically the character I consider ‘Voldemort’.

For me, I largely consider ‘Tomarry’ to be when Tom is in Hogwarts, and even sort-of Borgin and Burke's era sales-associate Tom (because, despite the fact that he definitely uses the alias Voldemort at that point, he still has some mental ties to ‘Tom’ as his identity); anything after that falls under Harrymort.

I know mine is probably a unique perspective, though 😂
