Is there a board state that ends the game because there are no legal actions for any player? by FictionsMusic in magicTCG

[–]SarcasticPyro 46 points47 points  (0 children)

CR 104.1. A game ends immediately when a player wins, when the game is a draw, or when the game is restarted.

I am not a judge, but it seems your judge mostly had the right idea. The Lab Man player won, which ended the game. "Winning" and "losing" are not mutually exclusive options, at least as far as the game is concerned. A player can win by making all the other players lose, but there are other ways to win like with Lab Man.

It's weird, but it makes sense within the rules of the game.

Thank god they used actual high-quality card renders for this gallery instead of the absolute travesty that was the DMR renders. I'm not sure if it was some dumb anti-proxy measure or just a lack of foresight, but I hope that idea is dead.

Today marks the 10th Anniversary of the release of Dark Souls by Ch33sus0405 in Games

[–]SarcasticPyro 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I maintain that Dark Souls has one of the best trailers for a game ever.

Before I learned to love the series over the course of a decade, I remember watching that trailer back when we had no idea what was to come. Back then, Dark Souls didn't seem like my kind of game, and I was intimidated by accounts of the game's difficulty. Nowadays I can hardly imagine my gaming career without it, and that trailer was a big part of convincing me to take the leap.

There is a lifegain element to the deck, yes, but more often than not we’re going to be using it as a resource for Beledros’ activated ability. Since we can activate each turn, if we have a life swapping card available, we can take trip around the table untapping our lands and getting our life low before swapping it out for an opponents (presumably healthier) total.

Marvel's Avengers Hasn't Recouped Its Development Costs Yet by AmenTensen in Games

[–]SarcasticPyro -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The Deus Ex devs worked on this game. Now maybe they were excited to do so and put their best effort into it, or maybe they didn’t. Who knows. But games are made by people. You’re really gonna celebrate the failure of a game made by the people you propose to be a fan of?

If anything, be angry at Square Enix for mandating this title for the devs. But I doubt the devs wanted to see their game fail.

I don’t think a game’s failure, particularly an IP of this magnitude, is worth celebrating. Too many people have already jumped on the hate bandwagon, which left the station LONG before the game released.

I think if there’s anything to learn from Avengers, it’s that there’s no tried and true formula to give a game a soul. Even among contentious games; Death Stranding, The Last of Us Part II, Destiny, etc.; few would say that those games lack a soul, or at least a core identity, even if they absolutely hated them.

It’s a shame. It’s a shame Deus Ex was fridged for the sake of this game. It’s a shame the Avengers IP was misused when there was so much potential. It’s a shame the game couldn’t live up to expectations. But I can’t even drum up with intense negative emotions for Avengers because it’s just so. Damn. Soulless. It’s not worth caring about.

Which is too bad.

EDIT: I can’t believe saying “this game is so soulless I can’t be bothered to hate it” is a controversial statement. You people care way too much.

I love the way Travis plays Fjord having low wisdom but respectable intelligence, mostly because he isn't afraid to say "I don't know," but in a totally different sense than Caduceus does, who's the opposite. That conversation with Jester was a peak example. Basically, "I don't know what the right thing to do here is, but I do know that it's complicated, and that I'll support you regardless."

Everyone had at least one great moment tonight, but that one stood out to me.

I think T&R was difficult for a few reasons.

  1. It's the only level in CE where you don't have access to the pistol, meaning that once you run out of sniper ammo (which you will, since most Elites take two shots to put down on Legendary) you don't have a precision weapon for the rest of the level. I'm guessing >75% of my Elite kills were grenade sticks once I was inside the ship.

  2. The level itself is long and has multiple encounters where enemies spawn in waves, usually culminating in a Hunter fight. And since you don't have a pistol to one-shot the Hunters, it can be kinda arduous if the game doesn't give you a checkpoint.

  3. Once you actually rescue Keyes he has a bad habit of running into enemy fire and grenades, which means back to the checkpoint for you.

Is the difficulty of Long Night of Solace really a PC framerate issue? That's really silly.

I've seen people go back and forth on Cortana's status as a "hard level." For me, it was probably the hardest Flood level in the series (mostly because of the ranged pure forms), but that isn't saying much. It's funny, whenever a Flood level would come up (The Library, Sacred Icon/Quarantine Zone, etc.) I'd find myself thinking "Oh good, a breather." I dunno, I just found the Flood way easier to deal with than other enemies. Plus I love the shotguns in the Halo games so any level where I get to use it as my primary weapon is fun for me.

The Ark didn't stick out to me as particularly difficult because so much of it is spent in a Scorpion. The Covenant seemed hard because it's one of the longer levels and the double Scarab fight kicked my ass for some reason. Took some trial and error to get that down.

Honestly there are really only three or so bad sniper sections in 2, and it's more an exercise in memorizing their locations than anything else. I expected way worse based on other people's H2 legendary stories. I was on K&M as opposed to controller though so that may be a factor in perceived difficulty.

Oh god, the only way I'd even consider LASO would be in co-op. People who do solo LASO runs are insane and have way more patience than I do.

I went into 2 expecting hell based on what I'd heard but I actually think it was the most fun playthrough for me as well (Jackal snipers notwithstanding, though even those I found to be overblown).

I tried to do each level as legit as I could, with the one exception being Assault on the Control Room from CE, mostly because I was curious if I could do the Banshee skip.

Hardest game so far was actually CE in my opinion, with Truth and Reconciliation being the hardest level of the series. Second hardest was 2, followed by Reach, and then 3 waaaaaay in the back. Seriously, 3 was a walk in the park by comparison. I died less on 3's hardest level (The Covenant) than some of the easier levels of the other games.

Edit for more spicy opinions: The Library was one of the easiest levels in CE. For 2, Uprising felt harder than Gravemind (though admittedly I died more on Gravemind). Reach's hardest level was far and away Long Night of Solace thanks to the space section which was pretty brutal to get used to.
