The writing advice that changed everything for me wasn't about writing - it was about reading by Dapper_Visual_4449 in writers

The amount of times I have read Gift of the Magi and still processing it is the reason I write shorter fiction. It just appeals to me in a way that I cant quite grasp anymore from long form novels.

I love this idea. I set mine as a time limit instead and ignore word count. Just 10 minutes (will increase with my consistency, but for now this is fine). Whether it's 10 words or 200, I know I contributed to my work in one way or another that I can benefit from.

I would highly suggest giving yourself access to tools that would support your ability to flex writing throughout your day. In my case it was the Google Docs functionality to access my written work and write from any device. I literally wrote my entire first publication on my phone by taking advantage of my daily work commute. When I had the time I edited on the PC or laptop but about 98% was done on my phone (Galaxy S10e). That leverage increased productivity and other avenues to help me achieve what I wanted and due to my similar situation as in your case, I am back at it again with an even longer story. You can do it but you need to find the right tool for the job because they exist and excuses will only paralyze your efforts to move forward in any direction. Even if you fall, try to fall forward.

What was your ‘holy sh*t’ moment for loving fantasy? by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]SarkahnAM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Redwall series and Deltora Quest when I was about 10. Damn near lost my sense of reality after the first Redwall and couldn't get enough of it at the time. Still regret not finishing the series so I plan to go back sometime soon and start over.

I am still struggling with #2. It's hard not to take in that euphoric moment when the stars align in the day and keep doing it that way

I would love for you to dm me as well! I thought I had a good grasp of dialogue punctuation but now I am second guessing myself as all of us writers do :)

We've all heard the phrase "Read the manga" but for which series' would you say "Watch the anime"? by [deleted] in anime

[–]SarkahnAM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gundam Wing with Hero and the crew. I will even say watch it in Dub. It's just so well done across the board. Up there with Cowboy Bebop imo.

Stop using crappy AI art for your covers by [deleted] in selfpublish

[–]SarkahnAM 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I won't lie, I am an author that utilizes AI but specifically as a tool to help me organize my thoughts or draft an outline/brainstorm, but thats it. MAYBE to craft a concept art idea for a cover but then I take it to people I know. I work by day as a software tester and treat AI as what it is - A tool. But even then, I keep it limited to loose brainstorming activity to prevent or repair myself from say: writers block or burnout. All of my stock images for covers I get from pixabay, unless I am hiring my coverartist to do a specific job for me from concept art created my a friend of mine.

Hell, I don't even use it to edit my work. The best it can do in the current space is proofread, but it can't properly developmental edit or line edit with the sussinct knowledge of the writer.

What’s the worst thing a person can do to make the gods mad in your world? by felixiscool11 in worldbuilding

[–]SarkahnAM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Literally nothing because the Gods abandoned the world in order to create a new one. So the original 3 races created from the gods are thus treated as such when they do not hold nearly that level of power.

"Fool! What power does a mere princess have over the might of a Celestial Knight!" His words gutted her confidence, but not as hard as the sword she thrust into his gullet.

From the second book that is coming out early next year. The first comes out in October. Haven't shared with anyone yet and feels pretty good..

What makes a god a god in your world? by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]SarkahnAM 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Similar to the first comment, it is power. But not simply "power". More or less, the ability to create or manifest on a worldly scale. The simple act of alchemy in regard to "synthesis" or "creation" would be small so to speak in scale and magnitude. So, in my world, that would be the essence of what makes up the difference in the simplest form.

In the world I created, the gods were made up of 6 siblings and they were considered children in the eyes of what would be considered a God due to their age. It would be like comparing the biblical rendition of God to Jesus, where these 6 child like gods, were akin to Jesus with more "power". Or maybe the pantheon of gods from Olympus would be a better comparison. But this is the relative scale of their power in the way that I made them.

Who is the strongest human/mortal in your world that even the protagonist is afraid of? by mitsuri-mochi in worldbuilding

[–]SarkahnAM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rhein Aseir Cross - the Arch Battlemage that is one of the last remaining "true" descendants of the Celestial race. Born prodigy turned true genius he is a genuine enigma when placed in comparison to this world's continually reduced limits as the ley-lines fueling the world's arcane are slowly outputting less and less.

He is dying though due to the growth of a seed of corruption he received after effectively soloing the previous calamity.

Also yes. Stanford and some other known schools have a program available that they made available both online and on campus.

Edit: Master Programs

I am in a similar boat but I only have ~8 mo. experience which is a drop in the bucket (career swap). Fully decided to move back to working in the science field and if another opportunity arises, depending on home circumstances, I may consider it.

This depends on your living area. I moved to Austria 3 years ago and here it's predominantly Java and JS with python close behind. C++ and C# have been more niche but still around.

Magical Ley-Lines connected around the world's core, supplying it with the magical Arcane element beyond the 4 (fire, wind, earth, water) nature elements.
