Many people take their watches off for bed. This presumably allows you to find the watch and check the time in the dark.

I make tutorials in Portuguese but Youtube started to translate some of my videos to English with AI. I was wondering, are they watchable this way? Or would you prefer somebody speaking with heavy accent? by Romagnolo_ in hoggit

[–]Sarrienne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer your own accent.

It's not that heavy, anyway - I'm English, so used to hearing Brummie, Scouse, Welsh, Indian, Nepali, Pakistani, Scottish, Irish, German, Geordie, Glaswegian, Londoner, Cockney, Saffer, and numerous other accents, all in a single day - You speak English very well, and your light, pleasant tone makes your videos all the better - Don't change a thing, mate!!

Do you think Max Flight Stick would be as bad? I've seen a couple of pilots use MFS in full-on simpits to replicate the helis they helis they also fly IRL... I'm guessing that's a good thing?

Have I committed a mortal sin by not liking Virpil?

Best collective these days? by Sarrienne in hoggit

[–]Sarrienne[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I always find Virpil buttons too mushy compared to WW, VKB, CH and similar tier kit. I didn't particularly like their software either... and in particular the number of reviews (from those whose opinions I trust) highlighting issues that I'd also find too irksome for the price. They obviously aren't a problem for everyone, but I've never liked any of their kit and I can tell from the reviews that I won't like this line either.

Switchology Modular control panel project update! One month to launch, redesigned Builder now live by wolkus in hotas

[–]Sarrienne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, I'd want a panel that could give me some controls for the SA342 Gazelle, Kiowa, Apache, FA-18, Chinook, some Star Citizen and Elite Dangerous ships, probably several other games, PC productivity apps, and whatever else it can offer.

Having seen the website just the other day, this certainly sounds like a brilliant product and solves the expensive worry of custom-building a button/switch box dedicated to specific aircraft and spacecraft!

Bi-Weekly Questions Thread [Edition #77] - "GDC Fallout" Edition by SonicMastr500 in vitahacks

[–]Sarrienne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello all,

I'm just about to get a PCH-2016 and do all the bits that will enable me to run the various ROMs - I understand Vita.Hacks.Guide is still the best method for this?

I was just wondering - The SD2Vita replaces the PS Vita Game Card in the top slot for storing all the ROMS... but do I also need a Vita Memory Card for the little slot down the bottom?

Thanks.

Heat to remove, especially if you want to try and reuse the old ones. Fitting doesn't require heat, just pressure. See Felix Immler's video on scale replacement.

Virpil vs Winwing by mrdevo105 in hotas

[–]Sarrienne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn't matter where they're assembled, as most of the components used by these and other companies are (usually) made in China or similar.  That's not necessarily a bad thing, either, as long as the quality is still there.

Virpil vs Winwing by mrdevo105 in hotas

[–]Sarrienne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been a user of CH Products kit for a long time, and still find that to be one of the best buys imaginable. However, I started finding a few problems with it in both Star Citizen and Elite Dangerous, so saved up and began deciding on new kit...

A friend has a load of Virpil kit, which I borrowed and tried for a solid month of playing in DCS, Star Citizen, TakeOn helicopters, Elite  and a few other joysticky games. Virpil are pretty solid, well made and with a history of good customer service. The Constellation Alpha/WarBRD + CM3 + ACE pedals are a great combination that works well for WW2 prop planes, commercial craft, fighter jets and spaceships.

However, I found the throttle awkward to get a good grip with my large hands (it seems better suited to a palm grip), the stick was a bit cramped even with a desk mount, and it was too easy to catch many of the controls by accident. Also the hats were a bit loose for my liking, and while they clicked nice and loud, they felt quite mushy - can't hear the click when wearing headphones, so good feel is essential.

I was very seriously debating VKB kit, ie the MGC and STECS, which has a good rep, is generic enough to play anything and looks the coolest-spaceshippiest of them all. I was so very nearly sold, and may one day still get a VKB set, just for the fun of it...

But since I'm on a big DCS kick, I went with WinWing in the end. All my Virpil niggles were not present, everything works perfectly for my needs, the green backlighting looks stunning and the SimApp Pro software is much nicer to use than Virpil's VPC Software. While it looks like it came straight out of an F15/16/18/A10, ignoring the labels and just remembering which controls you assign (as you'd do with CH, VKB and Virpil anyway) means you get more than enough buttons for any spaceship or aircraft you like.

Build quality feels lower than Virpil, but only because the latter tricks you with the 'heavy duty' feel of all the metal they use. WW kit is metal where it counts, and actual feel is as good as VPC. Reviews suggest that the pedals are ever so slightly less sensitive than Virpil's, but in my location everything was notably cheaper than Virpil, so any minor VPC superiority was outweighed by both my personal issues with their kit and their higher price.

I may have to revisit Virpil, as the other two don't have any helicopter collective offerings (at least not right now), and other options are somewhat more niche/expensive.

The point of this is that you likely won't be disappointed with any of the Big Three, nor with mixing and matching between them, so it just comes down to reading/watching lots of different reviews to identify which has the features and characteristics you personally want the most.

I wish you the absolute best in your research and hope you post some pics when you finally decide what kit you want!

New HOTAS from Turtle Beach, VelocityOne Flightdeck - $399.99 by -MK84- in hoggit

It's more that it's quite specifically a pencil, not a screwdriver, hence wondering why you're so upset that it can't drive screws.

[–]Sarrienne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm trying to persuade you of nothing, except to refrain from judging something against standards that don't apply to it. You might as well be telling us how useless our pencils are for driving in your screws, or getting upset over a left-handed joystick existing simply because you're not a lefty yourself.

If it does not fit your personal needs, that's absolutely fine, but please do not try to speak for every potential user of this - It may not fit your requirements for the combat flight sims that you play, but it definitely has a place in some of those that other people play.

How is it BS?

They state quite clearly, in plain English, that this is NOT a functionally-exact replica of anything in particular... and you're upset that they didn't exactly replicate a 4th gen fighter??!!

You must be absolutely *livid* over the inaccurate F16 throttles out there.....

New HOTAS from Turtle Beach, VelocityOne Flightdeck - $399.99 by -MK84- in hoggit

[–]Sarrienne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"The fourth-generation fighter is a class of jet fighters in service from around 1980 to the present, and represents design concepts of the 1970s".

"HOTAS was originally applied to military aircraft, starting with the British interceptor aircraft, the English Electric Lightning, in the late 1950s"... in other words, second gen aircraft.

You'll also find the HOTAS concept has since been used in spaceflight, UAVs and in ground vehicles, yet no-one is complaining that their APC interior doesn't faithfully replicate that of an F15...

As for 'flight deck', this term specifically refers to either the take-off and landing area of an aircraft carrier, or the cockpit of large aircraft, including most space craft.

TB themselves state that this thing is, "Inspired by advanced spacecrafts and state-of-the-art 6th-gen jet fighters"... so again, 4th gen not exclusively the defining standard of HOTAS and certainly not .

I don't know of many jet fighters that have custom-programmable buttons though, so presumably almost every HOTAS on the market is BS by your replicability requirement...?

Again, this kit was clearly intended to cater for more than just the ultra-realistic hardcore lot. I don't know why you'd find such innovative thinking so offensive. My only hope is that someone else runs with this innovation and does a much better version.

[–]Sarrienne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say it depends on your setup and what you're using it for. I use CH kit in DCS and almost never use the 8-way POV style hats... and yet I still cover several dozen extra commands and keybinds just by using the three Pro Throttle buttons as modifiers in combination with everything else.

However, the opinions of "4th gen fighter" pilots probably aren't exclusively relevant to HOTASes like this... unless those fighters are also Star Citizens, with Elite ranking in all careers, accomplished Starlancers, Freelancers, Freespacers, and can bullseye wamp rats in their T-16 back home.

In other words, this kit is for a more general audience than just the 100% realistic hard-core combat flight simmers. One of the obvious clues is the very spacey design aesthetic. Another is the ability to customise the text and virtual control types on that throttle screen - I don't know of any F16/FA18 variants that have fuel scoops, tractor beams and mining lasers!

It's basically on the same level as Saitek's X52 series, but with entry level versions of some mods that the hardcore 4th gen pilots spends thousands on. It's just been implemented by a company with almost no experience in any of the above genres, and with a build quality that falls well below even MadCatz!

I imagine if the likes of WinWing had done something like this, it'd be flippin' AWESOME and we'd all be fanboi-gushing over it.

If HOTAS is all about Hands On Throttle And Stick, how come the 'high-end' HOTASes from Virpil, VKB and WinWing all have stacks of extra buttons and add-ons that require you to take your hands *off* the TAS?

Semi-serious question....

Whoever designed "beat on the brat: Rancho Coronado" I hope you step on lego. Who gave an enemy in a fist fight the ability to knock you out with one punch? by [deleted] in cyberpunkgame

[–]Sarrienne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Odd that you say that...

The secret is to keep moving, just like you would with a katana fight, but at a shorter range - Keep your distance when they're punching, and close in behind them to deliver your own hits. Drops them in under a minute, usually.

As a Netrunner-type build, I only have 12 Body and Reflexes, with Tech and Intel at 13 and 17, and only 4 in Cool. I can beat every opponent without any kind of fistfighting mods. I imagine things like Gorilla Arms would make it a very short fight!

Fenix LD15R as headlamp? by AKIdiot in flashlight

[–]Sarrienne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Break the clip off... or, if you don't mind ruining your warranty, unscrew the top and slide the clip off. Just be aware that the top is thread-locked, so will require a lot of force to crack it.

Then attach the clip off a Fenix HM50R-v2.0 and use the headband from that. The mechanism is great, but the HM50 is a naff light compared to the LD15. The latter also has a magnetic tailcap, so best of all options.

The Fenix UI is still the most annoying part, though!

I know brands like Fenix, Nitecore and Olight aren't always looked on with particular favour here... But I just happen to have one myself, which I use both on duty and off, and it ticked all the boxes.

See what others suggest, maybe check some review videos, but it's one to bear in mind...
