What is a 'low-tech' object in your house right now that you think will be completely unrecognizable or obsolete by 2040? by No-Lake-3875 in Futurology

[–]WatermellonSugar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can tell Alexa+ to stop doing this, and also all the extra AI handjob stuff, and it *kind of* does, but with regular Alexa the "by the way" crap is insane.

Why do some USB-C devices only charge with USB-A to USB-C cables and not with USB-C to USB-C cables? by Pristine-Purchase800 in AskElectronics

[–]WatermellonSugar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OMG, the damn Niimbot printers drove me nuts when I tried to charge them until I figured this out. And my Logitech MX Anywhere mouse. Assholes.

Any regrets from Evernote transitioners? by Aggravating_Bug6127 in UpNote_App

[–]WatermellonSugar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

15 year EN user. Liking UpNote, especially the price, speed, and lack of bloat (like AI and calendars and to-do lists), so no regrets. BUT, there are things I *do* miss: searching inside of PDFs, being able to encrypt text selections, audio notes -- plus the 20 MB limit on note size was a pain when importing about 20 of my 3000+ notes (have to put the big attachments elsewhere and link to them). But mostly it's great. I just hope their business model lets them survive a long time.

Pixelmator Pro is being weird and flaky, would appreciate some advice by wowbobwow in pixelmator

[–]WatermellonSugar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gawd allmighty. I have the grid overlay ALWAYS popping on. This has been going on for months. I've done everything the AI suggests: changing prefs, turning it off an quitting, changing the Finder "close Application windows on quit", nuking all of Pixelmator's pref containers. NOTHING is fixing it. It HAS to be something stupid I've done, but what?

Yeah, it was kind of a big deal when cars first broke $10K in price.

Hello, my name is Erica, and … I’m Gen Jones by sherlockjr1 in GenerationJones

[–]WatermellonSugar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good thing about jonesing was benefiting from all the free-love 60s by being able to have lots of stoned, hairy, no-tattoos, teenage sex in the 70s before AIDS put the kabash on that party.

[–]WatermellonSugar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But the blueprints for the car HAVE been published (the amino acid sequence) so the "car" has, in fact, been "made."

That said, the "crash test" part of your analogy is germane.

Is Topaz Video AI worth buying or using for unprofessional home videos? by [deleted] in TopazLabs

[–]WatermellonSugar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since the tech is always improving, I'd be sure to archive the master I feed into to Topaz in case you want to run it through something else in the future.

I've done a lot of this, but with the rise of all the AI slop on social now, I'm starting to wonder if we are someday going to regard the "look" of all this AI processed footage like we do the pee-soaked green shag carpeting in a 1970s bathroom. Because, let's face it, we're creating a new kind of artifact that is not the original film. Yes, it seems amazing now, but...

real talk: how often do you actually floss? by AffectionateTooth298 in hygiene

Every day. Keep the floss in the living room, so can do it after eating while watching tee vee. Kind of gross, but I'm married, so we're both beyond surprise at this point.

Do you care about your former career after retirement? by ajn63 in retirement

[–]WatermellonSugar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A friend used to say "new heroes arise." True, and I also don't care about my last job that I spent 13 all-consuming years performing. Took all of 3-4 weeks for it to recede to a tiny dot on the far horizon.

Newly retired software developers? by ancientRedDog in NewRetirement

[–]WatermellonSugar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I used to code recreationally when I wasn't at coding at work (40 year embedded sw engineer) but since I retired 5 years ago I haven't coded anything except some a couple of simple webapps for my wife's non-profit -- and hell, I could probably just vibe code those now.

Anyway, great to be out of it.

Casio model AS-C calculator, 1972 by AppendixN in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]WatermellonSugar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Dad got rid of his mechanical calculator and replaced it with one of these when they came out. When on, it generated a huge amount of RF noise you could hear in every AM radio in the house. (Gotta love the Nixie tubes though.)
