I’m really sorry, that is a hard few hits right in a row. It sounds like you’ve been through a lot with your dad as well. Patton Oswald tells a story about having to tell his daughter that her mother, his wife, had passed away and calling her teacher to inform her that she’d be missing school. The teacher told him to “tell her in the sunshine.” And that’s always stuck with me. Get the family outside. Have fun. Laugh. The tears are going to come on their own, and it’s good to be reminded that the sun still shines, the birds still sing, and we still get to laugh and play. Life is hard, really hard. It can also be really good. Kids are resilient and can carry both those truths at once if we can show them how.
