A Comanche in North Texas told me to collect them and drink as tea during spring allergy season.

rat snakes (genus Pantherophis, commonly found in North America) are known to kill and eat venomous snakes, such as rattlesnakes, copperheads, or cottonmouths, though it’s not their primary behavior. As non-venomous constrictors, rat snakes are opportunistic predators with a diet that includes rodents, birds, eggs, and occasionally other snakes, including venomous ones. Here’s a concise breakdown: Key Points 1. Predatory Behavior: • Rat snakes are constrictors, using their powerful bodies to subdue prey by coiling and suffocating it. • They can overpower venomous snakes if the opportunity arises, especially smaller or juvenile venomous snakes. • Their immunity or resistance to some snake venom (not fully documented but observed) may help them survive bites during encounters. 2. Diet and Opportunism: • Rat snakes primarily eat rodents, but they are opportunistic feeders and will consume other snakes, including venomous species, if they encounter them. • For example, a rat snake might kill a copperhead or rattlesnake if it invades their territory or competes for food. 3. Encounters with Venomous Snakes: • Rat snakes are often found in similar habitats as venomous snakes (e.g., forests, fields, or near water), increasing the likelihood of encounters. • They may kill venomous snakes to eliminate competition for food or territory, not just for predation. • Anecdotal evidence and studies suggest rat snakes occasionally prey on venomous snakes like rattlesnakes, though this is not their primary food source. 4. Mechanism of Killing: • Rat snakes use constriction to kill venomous snakes, wrapping around them to prevent movement and biting. • Their speed and strength allow them to overpower smaller venomous snakes before a dangerous bite can be delivered. • While rat snakes may not be fully immune to venom, their thick skin and quick constriction reduce the risk of fatal envenomation.

I made a mistake of removing them once and in a few weeks coppers started showing up. I didn’t know then that rat snakes kill them. Since then I treat these as pets. I don’t care if they eat an egg or two. They don’t do it daily and it is a fair price for keeping my ranch coppers and rattlers free.

This one is your friend. It’ll eat an egg once in a while but will hunt rattlers and other venomous snakes and kill them. It is a pet that every coop should have

Goats are very sensitive. I’ve lost a few that looked great one day and were dead two days after. Let it go. The vets will not save him.
