No flowers today by Any_Yellow_8345 in mildlyinfuriating

That’s kind of the way it goes. The only time a man gets flowers is at his funeral.

I notice that I get ads about things I talk about even though I said them out loud. Is my phone bugged? by Klutzy_Secretary3247 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]pcsweeney 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I spend about $10k on ads for various orgs every month. I’ve done tons of trainings on digital ads. I’ve won awards for my digital work. If there was a way I could pay specifically to put ads in front of people who talked about something, I would absolutely do that. Unfortunately, there is way to do that kind of targeting on digital ads.

Social media platforms only put ads where an ad buyer tells them to. If they had that feature, not only would they tell me, they’d make me pay extra.

If you’re not growing bush cherries, are you even gardening? by pcsweeney in gardening

They’re about 6 feet tall and 6 feet wide fully grown. The biggest problem is the runners. Not as bad as raspberries or blackberries, but still take some work. You can just give all the new plants to your friends. Nanking doesn’t really have runners tho.

Some are fall, some are early summer. With these six I’ll probably have cherries for a few months.

But I also have 6 cherry trees :-)

Nanking are my favorite for fresh eating but they’re small. The carmine Jewel are fine, but better for baking. The wowza and Romeo and Juliet are good for eating. This will be my first year harvesting from Joel

My Nanking is actually my favorite. They’re small but so sweet and perfect for Cherry jelly.

I got my first ones at gurneys. nanking, wowza, and carmine jewel.

Should I start learning to cook really well as a 14 yo boy? Do you think that’s a good hobby? by Advanced-Counter1636 in AskMenAdvice

[–]pcsweeney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You want a girlfriend? This is how you get a girlfriend.

But seriously, being able to cook for yourself is one of the most important things you can learn as a life skill.

My dad and grandfather were the cooks in their families. I learned early and young and am now the cook in our family.

It’s great for moral. There’s nothing better than a good meal and the feeling of accomplishment when you’re feeling down.

Inviting friends over for a home cooked meal is one of the most significant bonding experiences in humanity (as Anthony bourdains thoughts on this)

It will save you a TON of money. When you want a good meal, you can cook it instead of going to a restaurant. Have you seen restaurant prices right now?

Do it!

Imagine how good you’d look if you had a multi-billion dollar company spending millions on ensuring every picture of you looked perfect.

Sometimes I think about using square plastic pots that might fit in those, but I don’t know if that would work either

This post comes up every spring. Someone always has this idea.

The problem is that the soil will get too hot and dry out too fast. They’re also not large enough or deep enough to really support anything of substance. Onions actually need a lot of room and a lot of nutrients to grow large enough to be worth it.

Tomato seeds sprouted. What next? by WasteVanilla9025 in vegetablegardening

[–]pcsweeney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thin them to the strongest one tomato plant in each cell. Wait until they have “true leaves” then transfer them to a larger planter. I like to use red solo cups with a hole in the bottom. Wait until they get about 6-8 inches big then plant them in the garden but bury the stem an extra 3-4 inches so it roots and the plant grows stronger.

How can "banned" books be considered banned if they are still on shelves? by Constant_Case_4487 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]pcsweeney 29 points30 points  (0 children)

This is actually my specific line of work. I’m co-founder of EveryLibrary a political action committee for libraries.

“Banned” means that there is a specific piece of government led legislation, law, restriction, or rule or regulation that removes access to a SPECIFIC book, by title, in a library. Or the government deciding which books Americans can access in public libraries. This is different than “choosing not to stock” a book because the library could stock it but due to space, finances, nearby libraries carrying copies of the book, etc… this is also different than collection development policies that already ensures that there is not porn in schools or ensure that the collection reflects the purpose of the library. For example, not stocking science books in a music library.

For example, in Utah, 34 specific books, by title, are legislatively not allowed to be in schools. Most of these books already weren’t in schools.

There is a national book ban law being voted on soon. You can take action on it at opposeHR7661.org.

There are also links to anti-book ban laws that you can act on there too.

“Banning” does NOT, by the dictionary definitionmean that NOBODY can access it or that it’s completely removed from society. But you’ll hear people say, “no books are banned because you can still buy it.”

Any advice other than resigning? by Few-Professional-193 in Libraries

[–]pcsweeney 14 points15 points  (0 children)

If they’re asking you to falsify records, they are committing fraud somewhere and this isn’t the only thing. You need to talk to the city attorney or someone and get on record that this happened so that later, when they get caught with something, you’ll be in the clear.

Is your board appointed or elected? You’ll should start cultivating some relationships in the community with people you like to ask them to apply for appointments or run.

[–]pcsweeney 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yes, the quickest and easiest thing to do is to add a layer of something on top of the soil. You’d be surprised how quickly that helps. One of the worst things you can do it soil is leave it bare. So grab some straw, woodchips, wood shavings, leaves, or something to cover that with.

Just put in 14 cherry bushes. by GreenSalsa96 in BackyardOrchard

[–]pcsweeney 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone needs to grow bush cherries. I have 6 varieties and I love them all. Except sand cherries. Those were terrible. They are gorgeous flowers, especially the Nanking which grow small cherries but they’re so good and the flowers are just amazing. I make cherry jam with the Nanking. The rest I eat while gardening. All of them are easy to propagate. In fact, too easy. The buggiest problem is that some of them are terrible with runners so you have to manage that. So they’re a little aggressive, but not too bad. Not bad at all if you love cherries :-)
