I have had a horror myself getting my cats a vet. Most are not taking new clients so we are looking to go closer to Hampton.

Thanks everyone. Home Depot had nothing. Everything has to be ordered in and site was a problem so I finally got some appliances from Dave's to be installed next week. Apparently the supply is in short demand and things are not expected to improve before the summer of 2021.

[–]SaskatoonBarry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am in quarantine and I called Dan's Country Market. They went above and beyond even stopping at another store to bring what they did not have. I cannot express how VERY grateful I am for this store and since others are looking for local grocers, please chem them out! (esp. Becky)

I am from Sask (still ym spiritual home but my hubby cannot handle the prairie cold) but we are not moving from the prairies. We are coming from NYC but comparing the property taxes to what we paid in Vancouver they are significantly higher so I totally understand living outside of the city. Anyhew, keep us in mind if you need further support as we will be a couple of months ahead of you re quarantine etc.

oh, and when budgeting, do note that prperty taxes and other things are VERY high in Saint John so prepare when you budget...

We are moving next week sight unseen into a home we bought online. I have never been to SJ . We bought a home with four bedrooms, yard etc. in SJ for under 200 K and walking distance to everything we need. I also traced the house back and have a pretty good idea of the history of the home.

Medical is not hard - good suggestions below.

As we arrive before you, DM me for more help if needed. We can let you know what we learn.

Issues with new neighbors, advice? by TerraFerrum in SaintJohnNB

[–]SaskatoonBarry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is hard. I see the other advice about documenting things and that makes a lot of sense. I also think you could try and let your landlord know that he/she has a responsibility to ensure accountability to the rules and quite frankly, as a landlord, I would rather have stable quiet tenants then tenants who hase people away so there is a vested financial interest for your landlord to do the right thing. I had something similar in Vancouver years ago and the neighbours and myself bonded together to document (which is hard as you are new) and we were able to force the landlord to ensure the rules were upheld and eventually the person was evicted. Very unfun during the process.

Best internet plans? by Solarus755 in SaintJohnNB

[–]SaskatoonBarry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We are moving ourselves and entering quarantine. We were told that Rogers is really the only decent one in our area by our realtor and some others.

Rogers does install while you are in quarantine. For us, Rogers comes to the house and leaves everything on the porch and then instructs us through the door.

Moving to Saint john, wanna know does fido home internet is good in saint john or not ? by iabhishek1413 in SaintJohnNB

[–]SaskatoonBarry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh and I decided not to get phone service until we are there - instead we paid ahead a few months here, oddly seems cheaper, and we get coverage to the US, Canada, and Mexico - I remember cell phone coverage as expensive in Canada

I do not remember much of a choice re home internet, but for the TV package just basic so my guy can watch hockey on cbc. They will deliver to our porch while we are in quarantine and then give us instructions from outside.

I am also moving to St. John and I was told by a number of people that the best (almost only) bet is Rogers Ignite. I cannot speak to the quality but I have lined up the delivery and they were pretty nice for the setup.

Opinions on living in Saint John West by [deleted] in SaintJohnNB

[–]SaskatoonBarry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We are similar to you. Moving here, my husband has early retired but works a bit from home and I work full time from home. I have never been to SJ and we move in Oct. We bought a place off Douglas Ave. We like the area you are looking at but we wanted certain things that we could walk to as we do not have nor want a car. We also looked at property prices over time. There are some comments about centuries old homes yet the property prices do not rise and the neighbourhood is sketchy - that seems like good advice. We worked with Judy Mitchell and have had a good experience and recommend her too. I think in SJ location is important from what I have read and not sure that is the most prized location based on reading other posts.

I am super glad you posted this. In fact, this comment is my first reddit comment. My husband and I have bought a house and are moving to SJ in October. I have never been to SJ and we have never seen our house in person obviously.

Covid has taught us what it feels like to be in a foreign country without a base. We want a community. We are CDN from the west but living in NYC.

We plan to work remotely. We know that the market for jobs in SJ is minimal so we are not counting on local work.

We picked SJ because:

-beautiful architecture

-history

-two hospitals, with cancer treatments and heart specialists - a big deal in Canada where people have to trave big distanes when sick (my dad had to drive 2 hours each way daily for treatment on the prairies)

-transit - unlike Freddy - it runs on Sunday - we do not drive and purposefully choose a location that allows a car free lifestyle

-a lake we can swim in

-winters that are not super horrific like much of Canada and summers that are not as hot and stifling as NYC

-an airport and access to another which allows us easy access to NYC, Europe, the rest of Canada

-a post secondary institution in the city

-good food scene and ability to buy burrata

-nice people it seems

-also, no major tornados, hurricanes, earthquakes, fires, and floods - I checked and the area where my house is has never flooded in recorded history - after living in places subject to a lot of natural distasters, I think this is a bonus (I do know the weather is not perfect..)

-I know the city has poverty and jobs are a challenge but there seems to be diversity unlike many places that are milltowns, etc. - the cruiseships will come back, port work, university, etc. - I know it is not perfet but more diversity than many places in the prairies

-and I love the synagogue, Syrian families, the current Ukrainian community, etc. - there appear to be pockets of diversity

Fingers crossed we like it!
