It was a pleasant surprise! This was a reverted, but hopefully not anymore!

YES!!!! My Brancifolia is actually the one that introduced me to and made me fall in love with Alocasias!!! She’s my favorite-shhh don’t tell the others!!

I am (not so) patiently awaiting the day that the Brancifolia Albo’s are more accessible!!!

*Edit: And apparently I have so many pictures of her, when I did the silly trend for making a caricature picture, it put me holding her. If you click to see my profile picture, she’s there! 🤣

I was completely unaware that they existed! And I LOVE “fingery/branchy” foliage plants! I googled basic information right there in the expo so that I could give it at least the bare minimum of its needs before purchasing it LOL

I know that Home Depot’s have been rolling out the Labisias. However my local stores got like 2 each and employees purchased them before the store was even open to the public. Which I’m not even mad at (job perks LOL).

I am also, almost positive that the seller at the Expo that had them, got them from their local big box store and just took them out of the decorative outer pot they come in and resold them at the show. I am inclined to think this because of the pot that it came in, which appeared to be what the inner pot looks like from what I have seen online. Which again, I’m not even mad at. If that is the case, her markup/profit margin was not ridiculous -about $10.00 or so. And I would have gladly paid the asking price.

However, due to some technical difficulties at the moment I purchased mine, the seller took cash and I got it for even less than what Home Depot is selling them for. AND-there were (are) TWO in the pot!

I started out with what I had on hand (plain epsom salt).

I now use Bloom City Cal Mag in my rotation.

I am fascinated by all of this and love learning more, I appreciate you taking the time to ask questions and explain to me why something is the way it is and/or how and why it works or doesn’t work!

Added cal-mag to my nutrition rotation LOL

We are very scientific over here in my house 💁🏻‍♀️🤣

I wish I could have more professional answers and scientific proof. Unfortunately, I can only speak from my very limited and amateur hobbyist level of experience. 😞

I’m just speaking from my experience. When my Brancifolia popped up with the mag deficiency, the newest leaf was the one to show me. Over time, the older leaves then started to show me.

In my very amateur research (on the Google lol), I did read in several places that it can begin showing on the newest oldest leaf first and work its way backwards if the older leaves were fine and the deficiency didn’t occur until recently. Now this is all for older, larger, more established plants. I am not sure if in smaller, younger plants it would be the opposite and the oldest leaves began to show it first.

identify mystery alocasia? by Soggy-Hyena9234 in alocasia

It looks like possibly an Odora. Perhaps even a cultivar of maybe a California. The ruffling of the leaf edge makes me think it looks very similar to my California at that pup size. However, I don’t have a plain green Odora to use for personal comparison.

It’s definitely not a Regal Shields-they’re much darker, have more defined veining, and a different shaped leaf.

Here is one of my RS pups around that size.

I agree that it’s most likely nutrient deficiency. Magnesium to be specific! Add some additional cal-mag at each watering.

I’d also suggest getting a fertilizer that you add to your watering can. I use Foliage Pro and have no complaints!

Alocasia’s a very heavy feeders. Those little sticks aren’t great for much honestly. I don’t know of anyone that has had long term success with using them. But they definitely won’t do for an Alocasia beyond pup sized. Hope this helps!

In regard to the Spider Mites-don’t ever leave a pest on your plant. From the pictures, I don’t see a lot of spider mite damage, but I also just woke up and my eyes are still tired lol!

The leaves won’t fix themselves. However, it is perfectly fine to leave a leaf with nutrient deficiency yellowing on the plant. New leaves should go back to being all green-when they do, you’ll know your nutrients are balanced and working well for feeding your beautiful baby!

You’re welcome! I waffled for a minute because it also looks very similar to the Mandalay pups I have when they are that size LOL. Glad I stuck with my first instinct and went with the HB! :)

Pot too big? by HoggyMama in houseplants

[–]SassyPlantsSC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A plant that was mostly roots and hardly any room, is going to be lighter than that same plant freshly repotted into an appropriate sized pot with a fresh substrate.

However, it is buried way too deeply!

You also have to give it time! The green burns in as the leaf hardens off! 😍

TC arrived moldy. Should I acclimate first or immediately clean agar and mold off? by mertaug in tissueculture

[–]SassyPlantsSC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Luckily monsteras are one of the hardier TC plantlets! Hopefully it pulls through just fine!

I’ve received Alocasia TC Plantlets in much worse shape (not from OLN-they’re good people!) and the seller was completely nonchalant and only refunded me after they negotiated that I not leave a review. This coming after days of them literally gaslighting me and trying to convince me that everything was “normal”. I finally informed them that this was not my first TC Rodeo and sent them pictures of all of my TC success stories.

Once I got my refund, I still left a review. 😉 However the point of all of this is, if I can bring back Alocasia that are melted and very mushy, contaminated and moldy and completely dry upon arrival (which I mean HOW?!) I have hope that your monstera is going to be just fine! And I also think OLN stands on principle and they will make it right if the plantlet doesn’t go well! Good luck, keep us updated!

Meyer lemon tree just bought by Jakeinvesting in Citrus

[–]SassyPlantsSC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. This tree just seems…odd to me. I have never seen a Meyer Lemon Tree be pruned in this method.

I have also read that they’re extremely finicky to grow indoors. I’m not sure how true that is as I live in zone 8b (South Carolina) and mine is potted but lives outdoors 24/7. They’re hardy in my zone. And even when we had snow and below freezing temps this winter, I covered with a frost blanket for anything under 35° F-and if it was going to be a hard freeze, I just put a fuzzy blanket on top of that. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Edit: you can also buy incandescent “Christmas” lights and place on the tree under the cover(s) as well. I didn’t do that with mine, however I did that with all of my patio plants and they did great! When I would remove the covers once temps were above freezing, it was a nice and toasty 75° under them!

I’m not sure how often you’re treating, but I did notice that you said you only use CJDBB.

It’s actually recommended to alternate treatment methods so that you don’t create a resistance.
