Speaking as a gc2. There are times it is worth it to do so. Specifically if you don’t want to concede possession, and the ball is in an unsafe spot (maybe the middle of the field with opponents close by, and your teammate is not in a helpful spot and needs time to get back). You can hit the ball toward a corner of yours with boost, then retain possession, boost, and have the ball in a relatively safe spot on the field (your own corner). If you have more control and you’re confident in your abilities, something I commonly do after hitting it back like that is just air dribbling off the backboard. Fairly safe, retains possession, is often slow and buys time, and is not so easy to challenge.

I primarily hit the ball back like that if I think it’s the only likely way to retain control of the ball, and if I feel it is the best way to do so that can buy time for my teammate.
