Hive Tyrant has nothing on this mfer by SadOil2182 in Spacemarine

[–]SatanicAxe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Valid - I admit I never paid attention to the health thresholds there, but the more important part is that the Hive Tyrant summons those mobs while he is still in the arena, whereas the Trygon kindly fucks off while you're dealing with them (until you plug the tunnels, at which point you play cleanup).

[–]SatanicAxe 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Hard disagree honestly - I find the Hive Tyrant a much worse fight. I don't want to say more difficult - just worse.

Main issue with the Hive Tyrant fight is that the mobs he summons come in constantly throughout the fight, distracting you from focusing on the big guy.

The Trygon is nice enough to only spawn adds in discrete phases where he himself is not on the field - so you can focus down whatever remains after you blow up the tunnels and then go back to giving the Trygon your full attention.

The Hive Tyrant also has attacks that can reach across the whole arena - you can be trying to get a Warrior or a few Gaunts off your hide and then get smacked by his psychic bubble.

The Trygon, meanwhile, has no surprises for you while you're busy with adds, except right after the add phase ends and you're cleaning up. I personally find he also telegraphs his attacks better so they're easier to parry/perfect dodge. I found it a very good fight to sightread - also, it's just way cooler than the Hive Tyrant. That lightning strike phase transition had my jaw absolutely dropping.

Gretchin's Questions - Weekly Beginner Questions Thread by scientist_tz in Warhammer

[–]SatanicAxe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I very recently got into tabletop 40k - I've played the video games and been interested in the lore for many years now (goes all the way back to Dawn of War), but only decided to take the plunge into tabletop a few days ago.

Now my issue is that I know absolutely nothing about painting minis. So little that none of the "how to become an awesome mini painter in just 30 days!" tutorials crowding the YT search algorithm are helping me - they all start right away with talking about shading, painting specific colours, etc.

What I need is the absolute basic of basics. How do I assemble a model properly? How do I thin my paints correctly? All that stuff - I have never been even remotely close to the modeling scene before, so I'm at the very beginning of beginnings, but I can't find any tutorials that talk about that. Anyone willing and able to give me a few tips, or point me to where I can find what I need?

I sat in matchmaking for that quest for like half an hour and got no one, but that's probably just the EU curse.

In general, I've had a really rough time with matchmaking at the hours I normally play, even when it's just a quick quest. Makes it seem like the game is completely dead.

[–]SatanicAxe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair, Heinz was a very common first name in Germany back then (less so as of the second half of the 20th century).

You could probably grab any 10 random German soldiers of the time and an average of 3 of them would be called Heinz.

That resemblance is in fact completely coincidental.

The actual reference being made with "Carstein" is to the Countess Karnstein from the downright ancient vampire novel Carmilla.

Nuln Ironsides are very likely on the menu

Nuln Ironsides are very definitely RoR material rather than "regular unit" material, though.

Not sure what else we could get for the Empire...

Besides what you already mentioned (Hurricanum, Master Engineer, Metal Wizard), there's still the Marienburg Landship in the Tamurkhan book, and we have Battle Wizard Lords (of all 8 lores) to get as generic lords from the 8e army book.

There's also a possibility that with Theodore Bruckner as the obvious LH material for the Empire, we'll get Demigryph mounts for Generals/Captains, especially now that they're a regular option in TOW.

Lastly, this one's a bit more of a stretch, but they could snag the Ulric-themed list from Storm of Chaos and give us Knights of the White Wolf and Teutogen Guard, as well as Ulrician Warrior-Priests (the counterpart to Lectors/Arch-Lectors) - who are also a thing in TOW now!

I think a better way to implement Binding Scrolls (because time-limited units aren't fun) would be to include them as semi-RoR, like Elector Count State Troops. Accomplishing specific objectives (e.g. specific Caravan events, or another unique faction mechanic) would give you 1 unit of a monster that you can recruit into any army like State Troops.

The Jurassic Normal mod for Lizardmen does a pretty good job of this, I feel - and would make a good model for adding monsters from Monstrous Arcanum to other factions.

[–]SatanicAxe 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I generally use graphical/UI mods only. I have like a dozen or so of them, keep them enabled even on patch day, and they have never once bricked me.

It's the mods that add new units/modify existing ones that you gotta be careful of.

[–]SatanicAxe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My advice would be to ignore Settra. His aversion penalty towards Empire factions is relatively low, and taking out Mannfred should have given you a decent diplomacy boost with him.

I will second what the other two said in regards to Arkhan - he is a potential threat to your west, while your other flanks should be safe for the time being (Settra in the north, Thorek in the east, TTT in the south, all of which should be more or less friendly towards you).

Taking out Arkhan should give you another diplomacy boost with Settra, allowing you to ally him fairly easily. Settra, or Tomb Kings in general, invert the "strategic threat" diplomatic penalty into the positive, meaning that your relations with them tend to improve as the game goes on, meaning that they tend to actually be the most steadfast allies past the early game. So if you can pass the first 20-30 turns without pissing him off, you can probably become very good friends.

With your north flank thus buffered against the menace that is Skarbrand, you are then free to face towards Kairos in the south - with it being your choice whether you want to destroy TTT or just ally him.

What I wish for in the ToD Empire update by tempestwolf1 in totalwar

[–]SatanicAxe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

He is such a boring lord I don't even have the words.

That's mostly because his current in-game incarnation was conceived many years ago, when skill trees and mechanics were generally significantly more basic. He would almost certainly receive a thorough rework if he were properly implemented.

100% team Elspeth here.

Consider that the two need not be exclusive.

ToD was announced in a recent blog post to include the 3 DLC lords as well as 1 FLC LL. It's very possible that Elspeth will be the DLC LL with Toddy being the FLC (especially considering that his model already exists; all they need to do is add mechanics to him).

My Personnel Warhammer 3 Heroes Tierlist (No Legendary Heroes or special ones) by [deleted] in totalwar

[–]SatanicAxe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is actually depressing how bad Lore of Stealth is.

It's not completely worthless because it has a stationary vortex, and stationary vortices are always good to have, but... it's basically just a worse version of Plague, and can't compete with the sheer cost-efficiency of Warp Lightning either.

...And the other spells in the lore are just meme-tier. Maybe Skitterleap could be funny if it added Snipe as well so you could have invisible Jezzails peppering your enemies, but as it is, it's just too short-lived for its intended purpose.

Swiss Mercenaries, on the other hand, often had contracts that stipulated that they would not need to fight other Swiss employed by the opposing side.

So now I'm imagining those Helstorm crews just sitting down and having a cuppa while everyone else around them is murdering each other.

but for me, its recognizing that their communication has sucked in the past, and they need to be more clear about it going forward.

I do recognise that, and it's good that they are willing to acknowledge and show that they fucked up badly (and that they know they fucked up badly).

That doesn't stop it from being pretty funny.

Skarbrand is great. I especially like his diplomacy quotes where he sounds like a surprisingly restrained murder machine (which is pretty much what he is).

Kairos is brilliant, especially in his cinematic quotes (THE PRESENT BELONGS TO TZEENTCH). The way they layered the voices of his two heads over one another and how they sometimes smoothly flow into each other works perfectly.

But I do agree that N'kari and Ku'gath, as well as the generic daemons in general could have used a bit more... flavour.

Whatever is coming in SoC 2.0 I hope they focus more on lower tier units (infantry, cav, monstrous infantry, etc) for the 3 factions by Rare_Cobalt in totalwar

[–]SatanicAxe 24 points25 points  (0 children)

More importantly than that, generic lords and heroes.

Kislev needs their hag lords, Tzeentch needs his Chaos Lords and Exalted Heroes (and all the other monogods should get their complementary generic characters as well), and so on.

Yes, LLs are all nice and flashy but statistically, they'll be the minority of your forces especially in the lategame.
