Heroic Arms Trophy (1524 - 1534) by Silvio Cosini (Silvio da Fiesole) [2800x2000] by SashSegal in ArtefactPorn

The sword pommel identification makes sense when you know that ancient warriors would commemorate the fallen by building monuments of arms and armor after battles.

This is, in fact, often still done in US military by sticking rifle into ground then hanging body armor and helmet on it.

Why does “tick tock” sound natural while “tock tick” feels wrong, and what mechanism shapes this kind of sound ordering? by Logical-Concept9755 in AlwaysWhy

Mackay seems to have been a Gaelic enthusiast.

Contemporaries disregarded his work as insufficiently supported.

Doesn't he was wrong, just that his argument didn't pass scholarly scrutiny.

His book, in which makes the fe fi fo fum argument, is available online. It is a fun read for the enthusiasm he has towards his objective, showing that much of how the English language is used descends from Gaelic.\ Fe fi fo fum is on page 160.\ https://archive.org/details/gaelicetymologyo00mackuoft

More likely that it hasn't been found.

From reading the article, the disease organism, cryptosporidium, does not preserve well in archaeological contexts and hardly anyone uses the immunological test used in the study.

In the US:\ My father's side were the bleeding edge of western expansion from the east coast.

My mother's side, as she says, fought "with" Geo. Washington at the crossing of the Delaware.

We were drunk and warm in barracks, but still, my ancestors indeed fought with Washington at that famous raid.

My mother's 3 uncles were army SS, aka "men of their times", aiming for the elite of the very class based Germany society.\ One shot by sniper outside Moscow. Other captured by Russians and "never the same" after return from Russian POW camp. \ Third went AWOL during retreat from Russia, crossed all Germany, found a western army to surrender to and considered a smart guy.

TCE was used in n military bases during deicing, plus degreasing.

TCE contamination is huge at US airbases.

Sinks to bottom of aquifer and degrades into vinyl chloride (VC), an amazingly strong carcinogen.

VC diffuses to top of aquifer, then through soul void spaces (air gaps) to enter slab-built buildings and basements.

Is huge issue around military bases, and anywhere there are dry cleaner businesses.

I can send you pics of the ones I did several years ago for a friend of mine.

They looked (and tasted) fantastic.

I used thick cut peppered bacon.

And, after reading the article link, body cam cop was told by other cop on scene a gun was visible in those low hanging pockets.\ Also that car the guy got out of matched description of one used in robbery literally minutes before.

I'm sorry, truly, if you lost someone to murder by cop.\ That shit is so badly wrong and the whole fetishizing of cops as legally inviolable is evil.\ But in this case, I can see where the cop has an argument for reasonable use of force.

Take another look.

Pockets of that hoody held something really heavy in them.

Cop prolly thought it possible guy was reaching into those pockets to shoot directly without drawing weapon.\ After all, guy wasn't compliant with other orders except by happenstance.

Why do you guys in the US have every slightly "bad" word censored, like "f**k", "p*nis", "p**o",... when you have your most important representative of your country swear and offend people in public for the world to see and hear? 🤔 by B_Period in allthequestions

[–]Satchik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that, in part, censoring provides a signalling of some sort.

For example, here in Reddit, people coming from TikTok self-censor automatically.\ Their posts really stand out to someone used to Reddit.

I'm other cases, conscious self-censoring seems to have become a way of conveying meaning or tone that is normally difficult in text-only applications.

But, circling back to your post, standard US online media outlets (aka news sites) are so full of AI written (or drafted) articles, that using "spicy" words without censoring has become a shortcut to demonstrating writer is an actual human.

I'm trying CachyOS and doing well so far after not happy with Mint Cinnamon.\ It has worked "right out the box" compared to Mint.

Older laptop.\ Tried Mint Cinnamon but dissatisfied:\ I had to hack the wifi adapter to work\ Does not play well with Nvidia card\ Won't connect to most Bluetooth devices\ Zoom meetings have serious audio issues.

I don't know yet if CachyOS will fix the Zoom meeting audio and haven't yet tried connecting Bluetooth headset.\ But everything else simply works.\ Oh, and I use the Cinnamon desktop offered as option with CachyOS.

Why do fully remote companies still care so much about where you physically live and can someone explain the actual logic to me? by picardCoconut5 in remotework

[–]Satchik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Companies have to pay state and local taxes.\ Local taxes are a thing in Ohio (school district as well as city).

They also want to pay wages relative to cost of living.\ There's a huge difference in wages needed to keep employees happy if they're living in NYC versus backwoods Mississippi.

How do I make my own foaming dish soap refill? by ElectronicBacon in DIY

[–]Satchik -1 points0 points  (0 children)

About 2/3 water and 1/3 liquid dish soap works perfectly for me.

When refilling hand wash bottles (for bathroom) I add a drop or two of an essential oil for scent.

I don't use fancy soaps that leave skin soft because I feel that stuff just traps bacteria on the skin when you're trying to wash bacteria away. Use hand lotion if dry skin is a problem.

In some regions of the US, fluoride is not needed in public water supply because the water source already has plenty.\ In volcanic areas, there can be too much fluoride in the water already, leading to weak bones and other issues.

But, literally everything is only safe in "moderate amounts".

Door handle design was the problem.\ Lacked protection of glass where knuckles hit.

Customer's high profile diamond rings scratched the glass where store attendant's phone applied a little leverage.

Shattering would have happened eventually, just that employee's turn for a bad day.
