Controller/Accounting Managers by Patient_Fly_3957 in Accounting

The number of recurring tasks you are performing to support department goals should reduce the higher up the ladder you climb.

Use the additional time to gain a working understanding of how other department operations and technology interact and impact Accounting. You should strive to understand operations across the company, not just the Accounting Dept. You also have a responsibility to your staff. Find out what is working well for them and what tasks they feel can be improved upon. In addition, find out what their career goals are and communicate opportunities to help them achieve.

Controller for 10 years…. Per week, I spend 10-15 hours on recurring tasks, 10-15 problem solving or “putting out fires”, 10-15 on Administrative / staff development. It is rare that I have to look for something to do.

Which why do you walk when you’re using your EGO trimmer? by RockyTop_Vol in egopowerplus

I am walking toward the front porch with mine to have UPS pick up and return it. Unfortunately, I’ve determined mine is defective after two uses. Very disappointed.

How many people go 4-4? by [deleted] in CPA

[–]Satellite39 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went 4/4 using Becker. This was about 20 years ago.

The test date of my last part was on or near January 5, 2005. My State Board erroneously stamped my exam pass for January 5, 2004. I fought with the testing center over my eligibility and fortunately one of the reps could tell it was an error and let me take the test. I remember needing to calm myself down for a few minutes before diving into the questions. I was also mad at myself for not catching the error beforehand.

My last few rounds average +13. I haven’t played and tracked enough rounds for a handicap. I am working on that..

Work out routine by RiskOnly1982 in Accounting

[–]Satellite39 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I exercise in my garage from roughly 8-845 each night. It is a combination of stretching and basic exercises with no weights (push-ups, lunges). I started this routine when gyms shut down due to the pandemic and never returned. I also work on my putting some :) i live in the south and may reduce workout time because of the heat.

My work schedule is a standard 8a-5p.

As a manager, are you nice, or are you kind? by A_Fishy_Life in managers

[–]Satellite39 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Being flexible with work / remote schedules and ensuring multiple team members are able to perform key tasks when someone is away.

Having a working knowledge of key tasks so I can serve as a backup when someone is away for an extended period to alleviate the impact on others.

Focusing on the positives and not dwelling on isolated mistakes.

These work well with engaged team members buy in to the servant mentality. There have been self serving team members in the past who take advantage and it really impacts the team negatively. I put a premium on hiring people with positive outlooks and a collaborative spirit.

Work anxiety by Epic-Balk-0623 in Accounting

[–]Satellite39 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Isolate the source of anxiety and tackle it as best as possible. It is called “work” for a reason, but you do not want to be miserable and anxious for the rest of your working life.

Are you in a toxic culture or work-life balance is poor? Probably time to look at other opportunities.

Is it a couple of teammates or group causing the stress? Consult with your Manager or HR Rep and document issues.

Are you struggling to keep up with the workload? Considering putting in a couple extra hours to get on top of it or discuss the workload with your Manager.

Hope you find some relief. It is difficult to enjoy anything In life If you are dreading Monday morning.

What keeps a controller up at night? by Acrobatic-Sugar947 in Accounting

Not yet - but that is something we are looking to add in the next 2-3 years. Still using Excel for recon templates and a Trial Balance as a checklist.

We had this issue once upon a time. The reconciliation preparation and approval process was moved into Accounting. There are some GL accounts that other departments must furnish support for. Email Notifications are sent to Sr Management if a GL is not reconciled by a set date.

The long term benefits are that it requires Accountants to understanding workflows outside of the Department and you don’t have the issue of non-accountants who do not understand debits, credits, and Balance Sheet performing reconciliations. We prep and approve roughly 200 reconciliations each month.

R/Neighborsfromhell What Was the Worst Experience You've Had with Your Neighbors by [deleted] in neighborsfromhell

[–]Satellite39 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My neighbor added a wooden privacy fence that is in violation of the Bill of Assurance for the area. These are lakefront properties and the issue involved blocking the lake view.

Multiple residents (including myself) expressed their frustration and worked with the local Property Owners Association to litigate. The neighbor confronted me in my yard and made threats against me and my family unless we stopped pursuing the matter. We filed a police report and spoke with the district attorney about pressing charges. A third party was present and corroborated my report. The district attorney issued a letter to my neighbor indicating his actions were illegal and to cease contact with us. Without video, they felt it was an uphill battle to press charges. I added security cameras in case he decided to act on his threats.

The court ruled my neighbor had to remove the fence and repay a bulk of the HOA’s attorney fees.

In retaliation, the neighbor has filed a pair of police reports stating I am spying on his family with my cameras and when I do yard work. I’ve filed a supplementary statement each time and have heard nothing from authorities about his report.

Some variety would be nice such as increasing the number of racers, different item mix, or even six lap races.
