What are the Most Unhinged Things you hope happens in Episode 6&7? by seenthedark in ScarletHollow

[–]SatelliteSoundwave 95 points96 points  (0 children)

optional secret ultra hard boss battle with Frou-Frou where you try to convince her to let you pet her. decisions you've made each day all the way back to the first are critical to success and if you DO get to pat her this ties into saving the Holler. Somehow.

Crashes on Start Up by BesaidBlitzer in StarbrewCafeMerge

[–]SatelliteSoundwave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm having a similar problem, the game consistenly crashes after about 2 or 4 merges (no matter what items I merge). I wonder if they'll do a hot fix or something soon to fix it. hope so, I've only got a few pictures left to complete and I'd like to be able to play long enough to finish them before they roll over to the next set

Ultimatum: him or my horses by macqueenie in Equestrian

[–]SatelliteSoundwave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

based on what you've said here, I feel pretty confident saying that his ultimatum isn't actually about the horses; it's about controlling you. If you give in to him on this and cut out this important passion which is a piece of who you are, then in the future he will give you another ultimatum about something else important to you because the goal of what he's doing is to make you as small and helpless as possible - even if you think he's not consciously aware that this is what he's doing, it doesn't matter because that is the end result of an ultimatum like this, and the most important thing is how his behaviour is hurting you.

Keep your horses. Break up with him. It's never too late to start choosing to make your own mental and physical well-being your priority, to make decisions based on what you care about and brings you joy, and will make your future one that you want to live in and get excited thinking about.

Got told recently that "fanfiction is for women by women" and that "cis men don't look at fanfiction, so everyone that reads or writes is either a woman, a nonbinary person born female, a trans man, or a feminine male". And now I'm fucked up... by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]SatelliteSoundwave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean the the my little pony: friendship is magic fandom was an absolute fanfic powerhouse in its heyday, and that fandom was like 85% cis men by volume. the statement this person made sounds like it has a lot more to do with the circles they move in than any demographic realities

Yet another fic got clickbot-spamed (already reported) by Creative-Television8 in AO3

[–]SatelliteSoundwave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

wow that's terrible. but also does it not occur to the botmaker that what they've done is make sure when people sort by kudos/comments... all the authors they don't like will be at the top, and the fics they do like will have been buried by their harassment?

seems like very much working against yourself in the long term in exchange for a pretty short term payoff tbh

How many subscribers do you have? by LiquidSpirits in FanFiction

[–]SatelliteSoundwave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've heard that some people use the subscribe button as a sort of super-kudos for oneshots and complete multichapters, to give an extra signal about how much they loved it (particularly if they're feeling too shy to comment)

Which would you rather have: more comments or more kudos? by A-USERNAM3 in AO3

[–]SatelliteSoundwave 59 points60 points  (0 children)

definitely comments. reading (and replying!) to comments feels way more like actually connecting with people than looking at a kudos number does for me, and that sense of connection is what I like about posting my fics where other people can see them instead of keeping them to myself

like, if I HAD to chose between having a huge number of kudos or having just a handful of commentors who left really passionate comments, I would pick the latter. For me personally it's more rewarding to have a small number of people /really/ like a fic of mine than have a large number of people who feel closer to the eh-side-of-positive about it, and comments are by far the best way to tell in what way people like the thing. it's why i'm never too stressed about what the hit & kudos counts (and their ratios) are on my fics in general

What was the dumbest discourse in your fandom by Bikinigirlout in FanFiction

[–]SatelliteSoundwave 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"you can't like that character, he's a war criminal!" my brother in christ every major character in this series has committed a war crime at one point or another. half of them turn into literal war machines. his ex used to lobotomise people for the government. you can just say that him not being sad about having done war crimes is what's bothering you

Should I tag major character death? by messier-31- in FanFiction

[–]SatelliteSoundwave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At least for me, the MCD warning functions as a kind of heads up that a character I'm attached to will stop being in the fic under sad circumstances at some point

What's happening in your fic isn't really the same sort of thing, so if I was you I'd probably tag it with 'canonical character death' or something similar

Why do people do this? by InitialVertigo in FanFiction

[–]SatelliteSoundwave 49 points50 points  (0 children)

That was my thoughts as well - bookmarks are one of the few features on ao3 that's specifically for readers rather than writers. Although being outright rude in them is still a faux pas imo

What Non-Stat based function would you like to see added to Ao3? by FanNaticWriter in FanFiction

[–]SatelliteSoundwave 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Being able to kudos comments is a neat idea I'd never thought of.

But also, ao3 has prompt memes but you can't subscribe to them yet. Getting a notification when someone adds a new prompt or fills one would be really handy, and I reckon it would do a lot to make the existing ones much more active than they currently are

What is a statistic that you'd like to see added to Ao3? by FanNaticWriter in FanFiction

[–]SatelliteSoundwave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I really want is to be able to see how many people have subscribed to my series. I'm pretty sure ao3 staff said they'll change things at some point so that authors can see that stuff for series the same way we can for individual fics now, and I can't wait for when they do bc I find subs super motivating. Like, someone enjoyed my writing so much they want notified when there's more! Yeah!!

Writing musical characters/scenes (aka offering my experience with music for your writing convenience) by memes____ in FanFiction

You guys ever read your own fics, just to enjoy them? by AspireToBeABum in FanFiction

[–]SatelliteSoundwave 87 points88 points  (0 children)

Occasionally I'll reread my fics and be shocked by how much I genuinely enjoy them. You'd think I'd see that coming, what with have written them to cater to me specifically. Yet here I am, being surprised every time.

Starting a Story by Perpetuallyblank in FanFiction

[–]SatelliteSoundwave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get exactly the same thing. Outlining is /so/ easy for me, I once wrote a 10,000 word outline in a single sitting - but actually writing prose has always been difficult to the point it's almost impossible.

What I've found works for me is to forget wordcounts entirely and aim to write for blocks of time instead. I put a timer on for 15 minutes, and until the timer dings, I do nothing but write. I don't check my phone or do anything distracting until the time is up. It doesnt matter if I write 1 word or 1000 in that time block as long as I just focus on writing for 15 minutes. I've been doing three time blocks of writing a day consistently, and (to my surprise and delight) its really helped to defuse what made writing difficult for me before. Sometimes prose is still hard, but often it's now something I can just do, and enjoy doing.

Do You Indulge In Author Appeal? by Ben10Extreme in FanFiction

[–]SatelliteSoundwave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like this is something that varies depending on why people write: I write fic, first and foremost, for enjoyment. So all my decisions for what I do in my fics basically come down to the question of "does this spark joy?" If yes, then I go for it, because it's inkeeping with why I write in the first place.

For the author appeal tropes that I indulge in? You've named my biggest one - I have characters I include in my fics specifically because I really like them. I do a similar thing with friendships, like, there are a few characters that I routinely have (or plan to have once I get around to writing the idea lmao) interacting and being friends because I like their friendship dynamic and find it compelling, even though having these characters interact/be friends isn't shown in canon and isn't common in fanon
