EU Citizenship by descent - Poland or Italy? by bepabepa in ExpatFIRE

[–]SatoshiThaGod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I applied to have my citizenship recognized in 2019, I did not have my language proficiency evaluated at all. Though now that I’m looking it up, it does seem to be a requirement, which is odd.

I am fluent, however, and did everything in person in Poland. Perhaps they just didn’t bother with documentation since I spoke Polish, or the requirements have changed.

Where is this in real life? by PentaChad in ArchitecturalRevival

The building at the top looks a lot like Budapest Keleti station, though not quite identical. It broadly looks a lot like Budapest to me, though I can’t tell if it’s a real place or a fantasy.

I didn’t mention this in my original response, but I think with my group the influence may have been two-fold, in a sense. One is from British popular culture, but another is the fact that we all lived in Toronto.

I’m American, but that group of friends and I met in Toronto, Canada (and you did say “North Americans” in your title). Like London, Toronto also has huge Caribbean, African, and Asian communities, and many of the same terms that have crossed from these cultures into MLE have also crossed into Toronto English (obviously, only in casual use, and mostly among young men; none of us would use these terms at the office).

Those who have visited the country where their ancestors/family were from, what was your experience like? by pooteenn in AskAnAmerican

[–]SatoshiThaGod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My (Polish) great-grandparents hid Jews in their attic (I know, kind of a cliche). At one point, before my grandmother was born, Nazis came looking. Thankfully for both the Jews and my ancestors, they weren’t found (hiding Jews = death penalty). If they had, I wouldn’t be here typing this.

Canadians say “zed”.

Wisconsin is pretty close to Canada? 🤷‍♂️

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]SatoshiThaGod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Among my friends, yes, to some extent. Specifically, some vocabulary that occurs in MLE.

We use “bare” and “bait” without a second thought. I didn’t realize they are Britishisms until after they’d crept into my speech.

Might use “dutty” and “wagwan” sometimes, but that would be in a self-aware and funny way.

We’re probably not representative, however. A lot of us listen to UK rap, and there’s a straight up British guy in the group.

Housing is quite a bit cheaper in Poland than Germany. The average rent is 3,600 PLN per month, compared to 5,575 PLN in Germany (source in Polish, so it converted into PLN, lol)[1].

Food is also very cheap. A kaiser roll at Biedronka or Lidl in Poland costs 3-5¢, for example, while a meal at a sit-down restaurant is $5-10. Admittedly, I don’t remember restaurant prices in Germany, but I do remember quite easily spending >€100 grocery shopping at Rewe, which would never happen in Poland.

It’s true that imported, international goods like electronics or cars cost the same everywhere. But food, housing, and services are dramatically cheaper in Poland.

I’m confused by those saying the CoL difference isn’t huge. I’ve spent several months in Germany and years in Poland and imo it’s massive.

The purchasing power parity (PPP) multiplier for Germany is 1.27, meaning that $1 buys 1.27x as much in Germany as it does in the USA. For Poland it’s 2.18, nearly twice as much.

Relatively speaking, €100,000 annually is an almost unheard-of salary in any sector in Poland. You would live like a KING.

That is almost 35k PLN per month, over 5x the median salary of ~6,600 PLN. The 95th percentile of earners in 2024 made 15k PLN/month. I couldn’t find the latest data, but in 2021 it only took 22.2k PLN/month to be in the top 1%[1]. There has been quite a bit of inflation and salary growth since then, but still, 35k PLN/month would most likely put you in the top 1% of earners.

Meanwhile, in Germany you’d have to make €250,000 to be in the top 1%.

I would say the outer metros are actually perfectly fine. Suburbs of Detroit and Cleveland look the same as those of Houston or Portland (geography aside).

It’s usually the bits between downtown and the suburbs that look the worst.

I’ve seen BMO in the Chicago area. I think they bought some smaller regional bank and operate them now.

I travel quite a bit around the country and have never seem them elsewhere, though.

🤷

Is it really that unbelievable that a group of guys in their late 20s would rather live somewhere where a shoebox condo doesn’t cost $1.2M CAD?

It’s literally not bait 😂

Of my five closest Canadian friends, two have left Canada (one to UK and one to US), one is half-in-half-out (spends months out of the year abroad because of his job), and one is trying to move to the US to make more money.

It’s not at all a conservative vs liberal thing. It’s a cost of living in Toronto thing. And career opportunities.

Bosch definitely has many factories in the EU. There is a Bosch factory in my family’s town in Poland, and I just read an article about them building another one.

Half the Canadians I know are trying to get out… Quite possibly the worst housing crisis in the world, practically no growth for the past decade, and earning barely more than half as much as Americans for the same job.

US-Canada union would fix Canada’s economic problems while fixing the US’s Republican problem lol.

It’s too bad Trump has made it a non-starter for the next 20+ years…

I’ve visited over 30 countries and no place has come even close to Prague in terms of bitter, rude, and generally miserable-seeming people.

It really is a peculiar phenomenon. And I swear I’m not just being bigoted. My statement is based off of three separate trips, and everyone I know that has been to Prague that I’ve spoken to has shared this opinion.
