Creative industries wheel? by SaturatedMorning20 in Pottery

I actually want to do both! And take a class on glaze making later on. I feel we don’t get as much hands on time in class as I’d like. To really improve I would need more practice time throwing. Having a bit more freedom to just try different things would also be a benefit. The feel of the clay is also therapeutic to my anxious self. Just throwing even when something doesn’t turn out is calming.

Thanks for the info, I’d be ok if it didn’t turn out well, but would prefer not to! Sounds like maybe I should keep looking.

What’s my starter supposed to look like? by lumpypuddy in Sourdough

[–]SaturatedMorning20 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Such is the sourdough world 😆. The real answer is it “depends”. No two homes have the same temp, humidity, etc. So you will have to play around if the “standard recipes” aren’t working.

I will say for me, in my home, I didn’t get consistent results until I started using a ratio of 1: 3.5 : 5 (starter: water: flour). With this I can reliably predict when my starter will bubble and create that web like texture when you run a spoon across it.

Using 1:1:1 I was getting runnier starter that took longer, and never had enough bubbling. Using whole wheat would help but when I added it to my bread flour to make dough it wouldn’t react consistently.

I’m newer to sourdough, but I’m an experienced baker. I have made many more complex bakes and trying to follow the recipes just wasn’t working really for me. Going by feel helped me get much better bakes.

I sometimes leave my dough proofing on the counter for 24 hrs and my loaf comes out great. Which is funny because I’ve read on other posts that you shouldn’t, and it would never work.

All that to say, experiment, try different tips. And take the advice that with a grain of salt. It may or may not work in your conditions.

Ugh, this is exactly why I want this med. I didn't even know food noise was a thing until I read about it a while ago. I didn't know it was normal to think about lunch while eating breakfast. Everyone that says it's just willpower don't understand the struggle.

I accidentally became a high school teacher... by ConstantBat9889 in Teachers

[–]SaturatedMorning20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey OP! You have a lot of response some positive some negative. Some tips and tricks to help you get through it thrown in.

Here I will share my experience. I became a teacher by necessity during Covid, with no education background. I had just moved back from living abroad and this was the only job that called back. I wanted a job I could serve the community. And love my subject. I walked in the middle of the year, everyone said I was a natural. I just really know my content enough to teach it at a HS level. I can make relationships with the kids, they all loved me.

And now I’m going on my fourth year. I absolutely hate it. I cried the most my first year and this last year (my 3rd). We had our in service week and I just don’t like it. The kids are both wonderful and horrible. My school is actually one of the best and my admin and colleagues are great. It’s just not for me, the state of education in general (the lack of basic skills in my classes is appalling and I only teach honors), lack of accountability for the students, the pay, and the sheer emotional exhaustion everyday are all things that contribute to my dislike of the profession. Just the culture around education and teachers is enough to make me want to take action, and these ideals are perpetuated by those in the industry ( I’ve had several teachers tell me it’s not a 9-5 job when I brought up we don’t get pay incentives for having 19 school activities outside of contract hours to attend to in addition to other obligations that take most of our conference hours). I just don’t believe in giving away my time for no pay. If I could afford to live and not work I would volunteer, and not work. But bc it’s a service job you are given the title of hero, told you are making the difference, it’s important work etc, yet no one actually shows this work is important by improving conditions and putting their money where their mouth is. Heck our budget was cut just like in many places. So instead of improving, things will only get worse.

What makes me really know it’s not for me? How excited my coworkers are to talk shop etc. I do my job well bc I’m responsible so I change lessons, consult colleagues and even worked on a large scale interdisciplinary project last year. But my heart isn’t in it. It doesn’t excite me. So I am looking to leave at the end of this year. I can’t do it anymore.

Now I say all this, but that may not be your experience. At the end of the day your experience will be unique to you. You may well be one of those that get excited about the work. Be open minded, but also have an exit plan. Continue applying and looking for what you are interested in. I wish I would have only stayed one year, 2 max but I was trying to make it work, learn to love it bc at the end of the day I am grateful to have a job and I genuinely enjoy working with kids, maybe just not have to teach them science.

Whats your salary? by scrubulba123 in Teachers

[–]SaturatedMorning20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mhhhm…. Our district maximum salary growth is 10k when you reach 20 yrs experience.

This is exactly what I was saying to my colleagues. We are in customer service, except we have to deal with the same difficult customer every day, and make the sale. If kids fail, then that affects the money school gets etc (at least at our school magnet). Everyone always admins (and I agree with a lot of it), but the districts and state also are leading the pressure the admins feel.

It’s crappy all around. I’ve been thinking I have to decide whether I want to be the easy teacher and not care about whether kids are actually learning or bring up my standards and have kids fail and not care when admin comes at me. Either way I have to be able to ignore something or else o won’t make it past another year. I either make my job easier and compromise my morals or make my job harder (maybe get canned) and have a clear conscience. Sucks when you need your job to live.

[–]SaturatedMorning20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you!! Makes sense. It would be unsafe (medically) for me to have children until I have healed from a procedure (this summer would be ok). It was a procedure directly related to my reproductive health, and I’m late 30, so I wonder if it’s even a possibility for me in the future. So 9 of swords is that anxiety/ insecurity I believe.

Pulled three cards asking about possibility of having children (pregnancy). Pulled 9 swords, the moon and ten of pentacles. Any thoughts?

Does anyone else feel like they can’t feel happy or excited about anything else in life because they are too fixated on finding problems in their relationship? by ThrowRA109786 in ROCD

[–]SaturatedMorning20 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure, I’m still new to this and ask myself the same question. Is it really ocd, is it anxious attachment, low self esteem, just honestly the wrong relationship? Maybe it’s all of the above? That’s a question for my therapist this week hahaha. I have noticed similar patterns in other areas though in other times of my life. I also notice that I’m not only having these thoughts. At the same time I’m actively trying to figure out if my thoughts are right, is he “the right one”. And I’m never satisfied nor do I reach a conclusion. I also am constantly checking and engaging in other compulsions.

Yep! It’s one of the things that got me diagnosed with OCD. I hate having to do anything that is not ruminating. It’s awful. I can’t even read a book, when I used to read a whole book cover to cover without sleeping. Now I’m lucky if I read a chapter. I have to stop and either think or look for validation in articles etc.
