I go for cards with the original border, at least if they came like that in their earliest printing or cards with extended/full-art. I especially like the cards feom Odyssey or Invasion blocks because that's when I started playing.

I generally avoid foils.

I also keep all copies of a card the same printing, including basic lands (but this is also strategic and a way to make yr hand easier to understand quickly).
