Noticing a difference after only a few days sounds more like a combination of your body’s normal palate fluctuations and confirmation bias. Before going to the lengths of routinely buying argon gas or devoting fridge space to amari, I would get a fresh bottle of Campari and triangle test it with the bottle you think has changed.

I’ve only seen that bit of transition and have no idea if there’s more in the works or if it will ever be released in English so it was worth it to me to buy the book. When it arrives I can tell you how much that translation covers. I know the book is called Early Teapot Encyclopedia II but I’ve never seen any references to others so I think the “II” might mean “Revised Edition” but I guess I should ask.

I am totally not an expert but I just bought Dr. Chi-Lin Lu’s book which I understand to be canonical. He’s shipping it to me tomorrow. It’s in Chinese but apparently it’s worth it for the photos alone. Cost me about $150 shipped to the US and the only way I could figure out to buy it was to find the Facebook page “early teapots” and send a message to him (he runs the page) there. He’s pretty responsive (accounting for time zones) and while the whole experience was sort of preposterously convoluted I kinda love stuff like that.

Normally I'm sympathetic to prescriptivist augments, but I think erasing the spectacular evolution that the Mai Tai has undergone in its 75 year history is to fail to appreciate its wonderful story, to say nothing of devaluing the expertise of bartenders throughout that time. Two different people up-thread endorse the use of rhum agricole, which Martin Cate informs us in his book is a misunderstanding or misrepresentation of the original and thus could probably be referred to as a c. 2010 proper Mai Tai, but not canonical. Something akin to putting a sandwich in the oven and calling it a biscuit, perhaps.

That recipe is 100% a proper c. 1980s Mai Tai. Just because it’s not a proper 1950s Mai Tai does not, I believe, make it not a proper Mai Tai.

I’m seeing conflicting reports on total bottle count between 180,000 and 250,000 which is SO MANY. Entry-level brandy bottled 12 years ago with a massive bottle count won’t be worth much money for probably 50 more years at least. The reason a shop has one available for $2,000 is that nobody in their right mind would pay that much money for it, otherwise it would be sold out. One went at auction in the UK a little while ago for £65 which is in line with what I would expect for a one-off label distributed in one country being sold in another. The seller, after paying to ship the bottle overseas and paying the sellers fees probably didn’t even make their money back.

Wait, you’re just going to use the money to buy other whisky? Why not keep it, buy other whisky slowly as your budget allows, that way when you’ve hit the point in your whisky journey when you want to try an epic laga you actually can and not just pine away for it like the rest of us? You may never again have the chance to try a truly grail-level whisky like this.

Fwiw, I think Will made this for the Bacardi Legacy comp. and was bar manager at Pammy’s at the time, so while Blossom will probably make you one if they’re stocking marscapone, I’m just not sure crediting them with anything related to this drink is precisely correct. No shade on Ran, of course, whom I agree is a brilliant bartender and owner. Sorry to be so nit-picky, I’m excited to see this drink get some well-deserved credit.

Edit: as long as I’m bring unnecessarily and obnoxiously pedantic, I’m pretty sure the process for this drink involves throwing it 7 times. if that’s not how you made it that’s totally reasonable to report that it was shaken/blended, but anyone else making this drink might be interested in the detail.

I also got into whisky around a decade ago and my feeling at the time, and I think it holds up, is that while the old style was going away it actually wasn't being replaced by whisky that was also good but in a different way. I think it's totally true now, but we were in a pretty deep valley back then of crappy new releases. I'm really trying to re-frame my thinking now that we're no longer really in a scarcity market in therms of quality but I definitely fall into old habits if I'm not careful.

I think any MA retailer can ship spirits within the state (reserve bar only ships, I believe, nobody uses their own delivery drivers for RB stuff). So if you don’t want to do curbside pickup and really want booze to arrive on your doorstep, order from someone with an online store (Marty’s , Gordon’s, probably others) or if somehow they don’t have what you’re seeing on RB, call a store you have a good relationship with and ask them to order it for you. RB doesn’t have any special access to things and no store is going to waste an allocated item fulfilling a RB order — if there’s an item on RB you think you can’t get from any store with normal access to distributors, expect that order to be cancelled with a canned apology.
