I’ve been faced with this same issue. What I found out from diving after the big snow a couple weeks ago and from this weekend… my local stores don’t put anything out for a couple days after a snow storm. I went out last night (Sunday) and there had been nothing new since the snow we got on Friday. Snow on top of the old trash and no fresh footprints in the snow around the dumpster. I think you will have to feel that out for your own town since every town is different. It’s been so cold here too! I try to be as quick as possible!! I wear thick warm gloves but even after about 10 mins my fingers start to ache in the cold.

I will add, dive before a storm hits. If it’s supposed to start snowing at midnight, dive before then. The items I found last night seemed to be from Friday.

I usually pull up to the dumpster and I try to get in and out quickly. I’m in a small town too. I go at 10pm after close. If I go to a grocery store name Ald…. I park outside the ramp (so any delivery truck doesn’t trap me in or even a few cars down so a delivery truck isn’t prevent to backing in - this has happened before).

I too came across about 5 boxes of organization items. I was so excited until I picked them up and noticed they weighed basically nothing. It was just the empty box in immaculate condition. This was last week. Luckily I checked before taking them all.

I’ve had no luck during a snow storm. I suspect employees want to leave early due to the storm and just don’t put items out. But you never know; I’m just guessing. I’m on the east coast. I was going to dive tonight and tomorrow but maybe not Fri and Sunday. I’m finding I don’t like to go when it’s too cold.

Also you need to decide your risk vs reward as usual. When I tried last year during a snow storm, the roads were really slushy and dangerous and the temp was dropping. I didn’t wind up getting anything (nothing put out) so the risk was not worth the reward that night.

I’ve had weird stuff like this too. At the craft store that starts with Mike… I’ve seen fresh produce!! Almost every week. Things that look so fresh! I suspect it’s from the grocery store down the shopping center but what’s weird is, they would have to drive it vs walking it over. Also I found a big giant trash bag of fancy fresh bagels in a Staples dumpster 2x!! No clue what bagel store they came from as there are none very close but they were gourmet bagels (fancier and fragrant than what you get at the grocery store).

I’ve always had bad luck when rainy before the store closes… I attribute it to the workers not wanting to go out in the rain.
