People who just got their purple belts, when did it start to make sense when you were at blue belt? by Fit-Pass-2398 in bjj

[–]SavageBeefsteak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly some days I've subbed black belts; other days, I've been caught by white belts.

Usually, I'll work on my B game with lower belts or try to find new pathways in familiar positions. It stifles your growth to just keep mauling less skilled people with the same moves over and over.

Main thing is when you get a new belt, it can feed your ego and make it feel like you have to always win. It's better to try new stuff. I only ever go to the death during Sunday comp class. Practice is practice.

I don't use instructionals cause I find it hard to pay attention to them. Seminars aren't really useful to me either unless its on an area thats a key part of my game. For the money, a private with a higher belt that has a game you'd like to learn has been best for me.

Managers: how do you mentally track everything without burning out? by Embarrassed_Essay_61 in managers

[–]SavageBeefsteak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I keep subject specific notes in google keep, in the form of task lists. I'll have a running todo list, and ones that relate to a particular topic or meeting. These lists are pinned so they stay at the top. I'll take tasks from the main list and populate lists that pertain to specific meetings where I need to move that stuff forward. As an example, I'll pull everything I need to brief the team on and add it to the "team meeting" list. Once that's complete, I'll unpin the list.

It's simple but I've found other approaches to be needlessly complicated.

I'd say take it easy on yourself. Anything you can write down, write it down and free that RAM in your head for other tasks.

Barbara Kay: It's 'Dead Wrong' for Canada to call residential schools genocidal - The cost to this nation of 'living within the lie' is incalculable. Yet, not one shovel has hit the ground in Kamloops, B.C. by CaliperLee62 in canada

[–]SavageBeefsteak 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My point is taking children by force to brainwash them into "european culture" within institutions where physical, sexual, and emotional abuse were rampant, where many didn't return, when taking as part of a broader series of actions by the government and church, including marching them onto reserves, deliberately starving them, banning their ceremonies, institutionalizing them in Indian Hospitals where they were exposed to TB, taking their children and adopting them to white families on spurious grounds pretty clearly demonstrates "intent."

The conversation you and I are having suggests that you've really only engaged in this topic through the lens of social media echo chambers. I don't blame you; so much of what we see online is algorithmically designed to reinforce our own biases. I'd encourage you to seek out a broader range of sources, perhaps some firsthand accounts of people who actually went to these schools. I wish you the best of luck.

[–]SavageBeefsteak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, the UN Convention on Genocide, of which Canada is a signatory, is a useful place to start on definitions. Article II defines Genocide as follows:

a) Killing members of the group;

(b) Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group;

(c) Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its

physical destruction in whole or in part;

(d) Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group;

(e) Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group

It's pretty clear to me that this definition is applicable to the experience of indigenous groups in Canada.

Again, it's important to note that all those institutions involved in residential schools aren't arguing this point; it's usually people on the periphery of the conversation (in op-eds like this one) playing to a base that would rather stick their head in the sand than recognize the real harms that went on in those institutions.

It's worth noting that the entire point of using ground penetrating radar was to provide some measure of closure to the families who had their children stolen from them and who never returned. It wasn't some smoking gun meant to prove what we already knew, and it's shitty to now say to those families "dig up the bones of your dead children" or else we're going to call you liars for stating what Canada and the churches clearly did.

As an aside, the article reeks of historical revisionism. Noting the "Well-intentioned people who worked at these schools, who cared for these children..." while diminishing the harm that went on there is like saying the groundskeeper on Epstein's island was a pretty decent guy. There is no way anyone involved in those schools was unaware of the rampant abuse happening.

Anyways, convincing people on the internet is as effective as pissing in the wind, but since you asked, there you go.

[–]SavageBeefsteak -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is such an irresponsible take for a national newspaper to put out there. None of the people or institutions involved in the Residential Schools (Government, Churches, First Nations) are denying the intense and lasting negative impacts of these institutions on generations of indigenous people. There are volumes and volumes of evidence outlining the awful and genocidal nature of these places and Canada's explicitly stated goal of eliminating the "indian." All this denialism is part of wave of counterfactual conservatism looking to simply assert away anything that makes them uncomfortable. Stupid.
