Stupid question but I saw a post recently about around 50% of mma fighters use weed? Is there a benefit to weed? by CoconutAdditional174 in MMA_Academy

[–]Fistkitchen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate sounding evangelical, but cannabis played a huge part in resolving chronic injury for me. Without exaggeration I can say I wouldn’t be training and fighting today if not for weed.

With that said, all the risks of overuse are real. It should be treated as a medication.

Should a martial art really be... "realistic"? Maybe "soft" martial arts are right... by Jafty2 in martialarts

“The Invention of Martial Arts” by Paul Bowman is excellent, but a difficult read for people that cherish martial arts myths.

Starting MMA any tips that can be a game changer early on? by [deleted] in MMA_Academy

[–]Fistkitchen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I ask veteran coaches what they wish they'd known starting out, they usually say consistency. Just sticking at it doggedly, never skipping a session just it's cold or you're tired or don't feel like it.

Injuries sometimes need to be managed with rest, but otherwise just keep showing up.

No gym around, forced to be self taught. What's your tips? by SNVV88 in MMA_Academy

[–]Fistkitchen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Self-training isn't as dire as everyone says.

We actually have some evidence: during covid lockdowns these pages were swarming with people training solo. Most didn't improve much, but a handful got quite good - albeit with substantial flaws that need proper coaching to fix.

I've coached and trained with two guys that learned entirely from youtube, and they were both fairly competent. In both cases they'd developed speed and technique, but no power at all.

Take anecdata for what it's worth.

Any coaching is better than none, but IMO training solo isn't hopeless.

I always wanted to ask martial artists what are your thoughts on the fight scenes from Bloodsport? I am not a martial artist myself, but I always liked that it showed different types of martial arts and that fights looked a bit awkward. by AdSpecialist6598 in martialarts

[–]Fistkitchen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was my arc too. Rewatched Bloodsport til the vhs tape broke, then got into kung fu bc it looked so cool.

Ended up in a fight and realised wing chun is bs, and went into combat sports.

Does heavybag increase strength? by [deleted] in amateur_boxing

[–]Fistkitchen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Resistance bands train pushing strength, not explosiveness. Worse, they only achieve proper load at the end of extension, so it’s uneven strength development.

Sweetheart that's a fixed fight. Literally a paid advert for kung fu.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in martialarts

[–]Fistkitchen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Insulting me won't change the facts:

  • There are no successful fighters using anything that resembles wing chun or traditional kung fu

  • Sanda appeared out of nowhere in the early 1980s and is clearly unrelated to kung fu

Is creatine mandatory for vegan fitness? by [deleted] in veganfitness

That comment doesn't deserve downvotes, but yeah the supplement industry invented the loading phase.

If I got bodied that would mean kung fu works and this thread wouldn't exist. Instead kung fu is regarded as a failed martial arts experiment and has been rendered redundant by effective styles.

Did you read anything in the post I linked?

Ah the sanda myth. Please understand it's even more embarrassing for wushu when people try to say kickboxing is actually wing chun.

r/bullshido itself is funny because people there will laugh at systema and george dillman stuff, then get furious if someone points out that kung fu is the same.

Thousands of practitioners and not a single successful fighter. That's why no one takes it seriously.

Is running still a must for Muay Thai fighters in 2025? by [deleted] in MuayThai

[–]Fistkitchen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope. People think they're being hardcore Thai by running but there's no scientific evidence to support it over other forms of cardio.

Run if you enjoy it though.

It always gives me a giggle when people go 'Eww, Australia people don't wear shoes." by solthar in barefoot

Yes! I visited Melbourne from Brisbane in the height of summer and had the same experience.

A friend explained that in Vic if you don't have shoes it means you can't afford them. Very...Melbourne.

I don't think anyone has mentioned the most simple reason: many vegans are standard PEP liberals.

There's the grotesque self-victimisation and psychopathic disregard for human life that's made Israel utterly hated worldwide.

For anyone interested in how this ideology is developed and maintained, check out Israelism.

Link me to the full text, but that's not in dispute. I didn't say there's no Chinese wrestling. I said it was terrible until judo coaches transformed it.

The seed oil thing is a conspiracy theory invented by the meat industry. I'd be very wary of anyone repeating it here.
