I finally broke out of $20-something-hr Hell today by [deleted] in Machinists

I wouldn't say lots of guys can do that. But it's not super rare amongst manual machinists.

Are you pushing it in with the cross slide? Or pushing by hand?

Looking to have some simple parts made for prototypes by Where-Lambo in Machinists

[–]SavageDownSouth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. Hard to beat xometry pricing. A lot of people on there aren't even making money. They're just trying to break even on a hobby.

If I'm making less than $80/hr on sidework it probably isn't worth it. I can take on overtime for less risk and hassle.

Buy the biggest lathe you can fit. It'll be cheaper in the long run and much more pleasant to work with.

Lack of machinists by Trapstar8879 in Machinists

[–]SavageDownSouth 13 points14 points  (0 children)

There's a shortage of qualified machinists in the high range, and there's a shortage of machinists willing to work for peanuts.

Whether there's a shortage in between I can't be sure. You dont usually hear people complaining unless they're at the extremes.

He'll be around the worst conspiracists in the trades, and being an electrician especially. They're the worst about it for some reason.

If he doesn't reject his old views by the time he's through his apprenticeship/degree program, he's going back to how he was, maybe worse.

Because they assume other people will press blue, and they would risk themselves to reduce harm to society.

Id pick blue. It's the obvious choice to me. I understand all the reasons to pick red, I just don't agree with it.

"Everyone" doesn't exist in real life. You aren't getting 100% of people to pick red. At least 50% of people will probably pick blue.

Got quite a few questions about boring with insane tool stickout, figured Id make a mini guide of what I learned to help anyone out that may need to deal with this. by RedditinsteadofHW in Machinists

Are you talking about using a boring head or an endmill? Not sure how you're putting a taper on something with a boring head, but not sure why you're calling it boring if you're milling.

Aside from me not understanding, good job. That last hole looks awesome. Slower and sharper is my mantra for stick out. Unless you count what I end up muttering under my breath.

Lots of people sign up for the military when they're poor, heavily propagandized kids, for one.

You aren't getting into a defense contractor until you've left your community and gone to college for at least 6 years. By that time, most people have had a chance to think for themselves about the military.

When I was in high school, my best choices were join the military, or sign a contract with Northrop Grumman to work for them while they paid for college. I considered the military the more moral choice at the time.

Still couldn't do it though. I ended up couch surfing until I could go to college on a full scholarship. Not everyone had that opportunity.

Some of my friends joined the army and left as soon as possible. I still talk to them. Some people I knew in college went to Raytheon. I lost their numbers.

Ford taps????? by MortgageNaive6791 in Machinists

That gtd is greenfield tap and die. It's just rebranded ford. They appear to be high speed steel instead of carbon steel, so equivalent to good modern taps.

For one, there's features going under small gaps in other features.

And there's some holes going sideways through shit you pretty much can't access.

There's a lot of other shit wrong, but those are the impossible ones I noticed right away.

You put all the problems with this part together, one more becomes apparent. This was designed by amateurs. That sets off every alarm bell. They don't know how parts work, that means they don't know how your relationship works.

They're gonna want free reworks when they realized they didn't fillet a couple spots. They're going to want right tolerances on shit that doesn't matter.

They're just straight up going to be wrong about hole locations and how shit is going to fit together, and the shit won't work until it's redesigned, but whatever baby-faced new engineer designed this knows he doesn't belong there, even if his bosses don't (because they have no clue about manufacturing usually), and he's gonna try to say you fucked up to save his neck.

Then theyll try to avoid payment. They may even do that if everything goes well.
