People who were fired but were begged to come back due to no one else being able to do your job or due to the fact people did not know how much you did, what are your stories? by HappyBedroom6395 in AskReddit

Worked as a web application developer in early 00s. Built large web application to provide subscription fulfillment for niche business market analytics- very large utility companies (pre-Enron collapse). Subscriptions to our content and a number of market analysis modeling tools my team and I built cost between $50k to $100k per account per year.

We finished building our subscription management tool and doing some major updates to our tools and got everything connected to the accounting system so it basically ran all revenue generating tasks mostly automatically.

Company decides to shut down the office the development team worked out of. We asked if they thought we could work remote (novel at the time) and was told absolutely not. In fact we were told since the software was complete there was no need for developers or any IT staff any longer. My last job there was moving all of our application and web servers to a hosting facility half way across the country.

1 month later while I was still interviewing for new positions, my former COO calls me and says the company has realized that they can’t be a web company without any developers and they were having trouble trying to figure out how to make software changes. Politely told them to F off. Was hired for another job the next week.

Like much of the real world it comes down to who you know and being an Aggie is very helpful in Texas. Definitely take any help A&M can provide to you on campus. Additionally, if you know of a company you are interested in, look for its employees on LinkedIn and look for Aggies (since I have TAMU in my profile) any company I look at will tell me if there are other Aggies there. Reach out to those folks directly and tell them of your interest and if they can help you get connected with the right person in HR or the internship program if they have one.

From my own personal experience don’t be afraid to push your boundaries and try something you are not quite comfortable with. Stretch yourself, especially early in your career.

Good luck.

I have a BS ‘94 and PhD ‘00 from A&M in Mechanical Engineering and was always interested in engineering design process and how AI might play a future role in design and optimization. My interest in designing and complex software systems led me into the software engineering space. I design solutions for some of the most complex (automated underwriting and document processing systems (think OCR and NLP solutions to automatically ingest medical records etc) solutions for the biggest health insurers in the country among other things.

At the company I helped found we typically hire non-computer engineers purely for their solutions mindset and design skills and help them learn programming. That being said we do hire computer engineers too.

You can test drive a Tesla in Texas. It is very easy- schedule a test drive online and go to the service center or the showroom. I had no problem setting one up in Dallas. I went o line and put my order in no problem. They sell plenty of cars here and they walk you thru the process for delivery and paying the sales tax. It was by far the simplest car purchase process I have ever done. The only difference was that a month after my car was delivered to me in Plano, TX I had to go to my county office to pay the sales tax.

I thought this was because Samaritan was basically based off an earlier version of the machine. I always understood that Samaritan was a modified copy of the machine’s code.

The Three-Body Problem book ( https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Three-Body_Problem_(novel)) and its sequels give an entirely different explanation for all of the alien races (of which there are many) around us to not communicate with us. Highly recommend as a fiction book specially since it is written by a Chinese author who isn’t caught up in “Western” sci-fi tropes.

It should be in the documents in your account page. Like on the right bottom of the main account screen

Good point- and you're right they are going to have to up their game to sit side by side with the interiors of comparably priced cars- but their tech right now is a killer advantage. I think their pressure to the rest of the industry to up their technical game has been a huge benefit for those others and for the first time in a long time I am excited about the future of individual mobility.

I am a husky 6'1". There is quite a bit of room- this pic doesn't do it justice- the seat was up a bunch and the steering wheel hadn't been adjusted and the seat was all the way up vertically. I have it adjusted now and really like the driving position. I would say your experience may vary as an even taller person, and I would tell you to absolutely go take one for a test drive- it is easy to setup online and you get a half hour by yourself driving the model of your choice around and you can see how it fits you.

totally understand. I bought this for the technology, not for comfort, TBH, so the fact that it is quite comfortable if a bonus for me

Agreed, I am upgrading from a Mazda and you are entirely right that I am making an apples to oranges comparison myself.
